I have a few questions, and if someone can help me out, it would be greatly appreciated, since I've trawled through a lot of forums/sites on the web without much luck.

In summary, my issue is that with hardware acceleration on, all flash videos in browser on fullscreen show vertical distortion. I'll take a picture/video of it and post it when I get home today.

This issue goes away after disabling hardware acceleration. Also, of special mention is Vimeo. No videos off Vimeo show this problem on any resolution whatsoever.

    My questions:

    - When I download the same youtube video and play it through VLC (the latest version), it doesn't show the problem. Does VLC use hardware acceleration? Because if it doesn't that would be comparable to turning the flash settings 'hardware acceleration' to off.

    - Does Vimeo use Flash or HTML5? If it plays HTML5, does HTML5 use hardware acceleration?

    - Does Windows Media Player (or VLC) use hardware acceleration to play DVDs?

If I disable hardware acceleration in flash now, everything seems to work as expected. Since I don't do a lot of Gaming, can someone suggest any potential real world applications I could try running to see if the GPU is going to crap out on me? This is just so I can make a decision whether I want to return, repair or do nothing with my latitude.

    Thanks a ton.

Hello, I recently got my E6510 with Windows 7 as well... And im trying to get a fan control software for it (I had a different latitude that worked GREAT with ik8fangui... but it's not compatible with this model..) Anyone has a suggestion? Im not all that tech savvy really and Speedfan is a bit advanced for me..

Thanks in advance if anyone has any suggestions, or information! ,

VLC uses it's own analysis system instead of using Flash. A Flash video is actually a FLV. And an FLV format is a modified MP4. Basically any MP4 player can play it, if it has the ability to ignore the extra information added to it, so that Flash can use it.

Right-click on the video, and you'll know. (You'll have "About Flash Player" if it's a Flash). To my knowledge Vimeo uses Flash.

All video formats, today, (including Flash with Flash 10.1 with the latest graphic card drivers) uses the GPU to help decode the video, so yes, it uses hardware acceleration.

That because it does software acceleration, aka: CPU.

When you put your Flash video full screen, it's only now that the GPU is utilizes, and hence you have the problem under full screen and not window mode.

    The fix is really simple:
1- Uninstall your current version of Flash for IE and Chrome
2- Go to Adobe web site and download Flash for IE and Chrome, and install it (essentially updating Flash cleanly, is what you are doing)
3- Go to Nvidia web site (assuming you have the Nvidia GPU), and get the latest drivers from them - For Win7 64-bit: NVIDIA DRIVERS 260.63 BETA

    The driver release note says:
4- Try now. If that doesn't help, try a different web browser, such as IE8 or the impressive 9 Beta, or even better Firefox or Opera. See if that helps.

Wow what a great wealth of info here. This is my first post. I recently bought an e6510 refurb from the outlet (I think I got a great price with the discount coupon). 2 things. This one came with Win 7 Pro 32bit. I want 64 bit and they sent me the disk. havent installed it yet, because they are in the process of sending me a system exchange (the SD card slot is a bit inside the case and you have to use your finger nail to put a card in our get it out - its very difficult) the problem is when I boot, it always blinks after a bit and says it had to use teh default screen settings instead of Aero. This supposedly came with the video card (see config below)
I am into photography and will be running the 64 bit versions of both Photoshop and lightroom 3.0 (which I use all the time) but will do the heavy editing on my desktop. any tips would be great. I am going to wait until the new system arrives before I go to reinstall Win 7 64 bit.

the only thing I might have liked would be a camera.. but I have never wanted to use one yet.. so not a big deal.
I paid $742 ---- good deal? I find it a bit heavy so far, but figured I could prolly sell it and break even if I really want and get the Sony VPC Z1290 13"

When you'll receive your replacement system, then we will look into problems. It is useless to fix problems of a system you'll never touch again.

Also, my experience with Sony, is that if you need to RMA your system, they usually takes a month. So not worth it.
With Dell, you can upgrade your warranty with a 3 year in home server, where they come the next buisness day at you place to fix your system, at the time you want. very useful for ensuring that Dell understood the problem (replacing the right part), that the job is done correctly (done in front of you), and that your porblem is fixed. For me, it came with my laptop (I got it new, and it Canada, you could NOT not have it :) and it was for 3 years. That was enough for me to say Dell is confident enough that they made a solid system.)

Looking at the spec now and Oh wow the Sony system is impressive. Less battery life, I believe (compared larger battery). But still very good.
HDMI, I would prefer Display port (HDMI max res is 1920x1080), no eSATA, less USB ports. Only 2 year warranty max, and is uber expensive.

I have tried various suggestions mentioned by you and it still happens! Only exception is vimeo for some reason. I noticed not all videos on vimeo are Flash. I have done everything you suggested before too, but I gave it one last shot. I'm still seeing various combinations. I really appreciate all your help.

Hey, that is the exact same system I have, and I'm having problems with it's video card. When did you return that system? I bought mine on 21st, it arrived on the 23rd of Sept.

Also I paid $799.22 after taxes, is your price before or after taxes?

As far as I know, there's no software that does this. Perhaps there is not a big need. Dell have done a reasonably good job in providing several fan speeds to provide a balance between temperature and fan noise.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. I'm sure I'll have more specific questions to come once the Dell actually arrives in about a week.

I've been having similar problems with my NVS3100M on a T410 Thinkpad just that the flickering is not nearly as frequent (minutes between instead of seconds) and sometimes non-existent for long stretches of time.

Do you get any flickering when playing H264-videos in Windows Media Player (since I know for sure it used GPU hardware accel as well. You can check by using GPU-Z and looking at the Video Engine Load. Here is a trailer if you need one.)? I don't, so I'm sceptical if it's a Flash or hardware-problem. I've tried all post 10.1-versions I could get my hands on in multiple browsers but it happens everywhere.

    Are you using Windows 7 64bit or 32bit BTW? I'm on 64bit.

I actually sort of wish I had it as bad as you since it's an absolute pain to debug when it happens so infrequently. I think I've watched the 1080p The Dark Knight trailer on Youtube 50+ times now :p

    Edit:

I'm on the latest drivers from Lenovo which came out a week ago (257.38). The first WHQL-driver from Nvidia which made mention of the hardware accel was 257.21, but my old 18X.XX drivers also supported it so I wouldn't put much weight to when that statement appeared. I'm thinking my next step should be testing the latest drivers directly from Nvidia, even though they state I should use Lenovo's. (Though trying this is less of priority now then a week ago when the latest Lenovo-drivers where from March.) I also reinstalled Windows before installing the new drivers to make sure there wouldn't be any problems upgrading.

So sadly, there doesn't appear to be a "really simple" fix :)

Edit 3: Oh, and Flash is now integrated in Chrome so it automatically keeps it up to date. You can manually switch to e.g. the newest beta drivers by going to about: plugins (remove the space after the ":").
