Does the M4400 support 12.5mm hard drives such as the WD WD10TPVT 1TB hdd?

No, both the main HDD and ODD are 9.5mm. The most you could go for is the new 750GB 9.5mm drive.

If you don't need your optical drive, you can always mod a second HDD into the slot...

Well I'm using a newmodulus hdd caddy to house a second hdd (the 80gb the laptop originally came with) What do you mean by mod? I measured the depth and I don't think a 12.5mm could fit.

The ODD height is also 9.5mm, so even if you use a caddy, it would only support a 2nd 9.5mm HDD.
