m4400 - T9600 to QX9300 DIY upgrade.

    Thinking about ordering a QX9300 to replace my T9600 in my m4400. I tried searching here and google for a how to disassemble and replace the cpu but came up dry.

    Anyone have a link to a step by step for this?

    Was the manual on the Dell website insufficient for your purposes? They usually have very clear instructions under the support site.

    I have 1 QX9300 machine already... bit of a toaster oven! Did you complete the upgrade? If so, has heat been a problem?

    Looks like Tom has a M4500 now.

    Funny you talk about heat, I had an X9100 in my M4400 for a while, and it had similar temps to the QX, the i5-540m I have in my M4500 is a far hotter idling cpu than the X9100 [by 15degC plus] despite the M4500 having much improved cooling, plus it performs slightly worse rendering cinebench than the older c2d....a step forward? not imo, when they reduce the thermals maybe, this is the first notebook I've ever owned where the cpu is a lot hotter than the GPU....no wonder they now use two heatpipes just for the cpu

    Interesting considering that the i5 CPU consumes less power than C2Ds in reviews (assuming other components being identical)... Maybe an issue with thermal contact?

    Thermal contact was fine, although a lot of TIM applied ex factory.
    I reapplied Tuniq TX-2 and then ran 3dmark06 and wprime 1024 successively while recording temps with hwmonitor as I did with the M4400/X9100 previously and as you can see the idle temps are a lot higher with the i5, although maximum is similar.
    These i5 temps are actually improved about 3 or 4 degs with the new TIM, but a couple of other things not in it's favour is that the ambient temps are around half what they were when I did the same test with the X9100, plus the cooling system in the M4500 is considerably more substantial than in the M4400, I'm aware of the 35w v 44w+NB difference, but hey, reality is what it is
