A bit of a pain to do with a new machine, but if you're confident enough, try removing the keyboard to see if the connectors are fully plugged in? Maybe the connector isn't seated properly so the backlighting isn't getting power.

Sending a technician out to replace the keyboard / mobo / palmrest.. HOLY #*@^ .. talk about going overboard...

Saw your reply afterwards and I'm not comfy messing with my new machine.. i'll be afraid of voiding warranties..

Oh you shouldn't worry about the warranty voiding. In the future, just talk to Dell, tell them you want to open it and check the problem, as long as you don't break anything warranty is honored ;). I've received parts for install before from Dell to replace the LCD assembly.

Yeah that's Dell Small business support for you, they don't take risks.

Let me guess Next day on-site tech?

Well, if you're uncomfortable, then you're uncomfortable. Not everyone is confident enough to open up their machines. That is, however, the nice thing about business warranties; they're very good about sending people out to service your machine if you need it. Of course, sometimes the tech they send out isn't exactly the most experienced, but... that's a separate issue.

Warranties are only voided if you replace the part and screw up. ;)

Dell's got all their service manuals online, but of course not everyone feels comfortable replacing parts in their laptop. But only way to learn to swim is to jump into the pool. Also that's how nice those business support is, they send over somebody to do the dirty work.

Yeah.. it's NBD alright, but is going to take one more day for the person to get here, since there was some slight issue with the warranty on record with Dell.. but nonetheless I expect the person to be here tomorrow and get this taken care of..

I've build my own desktop systems, volt modded by gfx card.. Have to share a lil story of mine:
I had to join two points on the PCB to allow for higher voltages, and couldn't find a CircuitWriter pen anywhere. I ended up buyin a can of liquid tape and 2 powdered graphite tubes. I mixed up two to make some sticky graphite. Had to try a lot of combination till I could just get the combo to conduct and stick. Was a fun experiment..

But that was a low budget experiment and I ended up spending more on an aftermarket cooler + my labor than a new one would have been. Ha! the things we do in the name of fun. :)

Ooo.. BTW, folks I'm guessin if the mobo is going to be changed, the gfx card would probably need to be reseated.. right?? Should I get better aftermarket paste and ask the technician to use that??
