Has anyone tried to use M6500 with USB 3.0 HD or Memory Stick. I wanna know the performance of the USB port.

Last week I got a My Book Essential 3TB and when I tested the hard drive, I found the write speed only goes up 55-60 M/s. Anyone know the reasons ? I used to test HD with ESATA port, the write speed goes over 100M/s.

    Thanks !

Try the different write caching settings on the Policies page of the external HDD properties in Device Manager. It is possible that the default settings for USB are to minimise the risk of data loss (but also slows the transfer performance).

It might also have something to do with the MyBook USB 3.0 controller. When notebookreview tested the older 1 TB MyBook with USB 3.0, it would only get up to 95 MB/s on writes. Someone else in the one of the Hardware Components subforums found a web page somewhere that noticed that USB 3.0 tends to be faster on reads, and slower on writes than eSATA (which was slower on reads, and faster on writes).

    Hi,

Which of the ports is the USB3? Or are all of them USB3?

    Regards,
    Paul

John, I have already changed to better perfomance on Policies tab. It doesnt make much difference.

Lazy Gun, On you left side of the system, they are blue ports

I would next try some other benchmark programs such as HD Tune and SiSoftware Sandra (I think the latter bypasses the cache while the former can give an indication of speed variation across the drive).

Are you sure you have a USB 3.0 enabled external HDD?

Of course, do you think the read speed of usb2.0 HD can go up to 100m/s ?
I got a usb 3.0 dock at first, and using a 3.5 inch WD 500G 7200RPM, the write speed also goes up to 55m/s.
There is a review of WD 3TB External HD by anandtech:

I dont think the usb 3.0 port in laptop will make a big difference and I have already contacted the dell, however they could not find any info about usb 3.0. Today I just used the ATTO Disk Benchmark to test again, and result was the same.

It's looking as if the USB 3.0 hardware at one end of the connection (ie either in the external HDD or in the computer) isn't performing at full USB 3.0 speed. I remember having something similar about 3 years ago with an ExpressCard eSATA adaptor: It was slower than the HDD but faster than USB 2.0.

If you want the fastest possible external HDD / SSD connection then eSATA is the best solution because there is minimal additional hardware between the drive and the CPU.

I just checked with a Lenovo W510 (with usb 3.0 port, also using NEC chipset) user, He found the same problem as me.
Maybe because the chipset is on the IO board not integrate on the motherboard. Right now only few people use USB 3.0 device with laptop and I hope the manufacture could update the firmware for laptop.
