ATI's are good for the money but I think nvidia is better in this department. Neither are a waste of money. If you can, a 4000M is a good investment, CUDA seem to be better at CAD's. As for XM type processors, imo its a waste like all extreme type processors intel sells, you get maybe 2-5% increase in performance for a lot of money spent. A better use that money would be ssd and ram.

One of my thoughts is going with the ATI to start, then saving up over the next year or two so I could upgrade to the 5010m or whatever the latest and greatest is. Might even be able to sell the ATI for a little bit to offset the upgrade cost. Just figuring for the first year or two that I wouldn't be doing any intensive enough to warrant the cost of ordering a 3000 or 4000m and then I could save my pennies and go right to the top.

You could do that but buying a 5010m by itself can be expensive, also hard to find, usually ebay is the route to take but ebay sellers also know what they have is somewhat rare so they will ask a high price for it. Upgrading it youself will void the dell warranty for sure, you can have dell do it of course, but it is expensive to do it.

How many USB ports are there on this dock? I specs say just 2, but the manual says 5.

The Quadro 5010 for the M6600 probably won't be getting any cheaper; in fact, it will possibly get more expensive and/or hard to find once another model of Precision and a new wave of Quadros launch and they don't make as many 5010s anymore. At the moment, there's no telling if any future cards will be compatible with the M6600. (I would say, there's no reason to assume that any future cards will be compatible, but *maybe* some will work.) Something to think about.

As for the "XM" processor, I agree that it's probably not worth it. I'm sure it helps out a lot with CPU-intensive workloads, but in my experience, pretty much all CPUs are absurdly fast and the performance bottleneck for most workloads is somewhere else. That money is better put toward the graphics card and more RAM or a SSD. (Do make sure to get a quad-core, though.)

I think I know the answer.
You have to charge the battery more than 90% and then make the test again.
If the battery is below 90% the system doesn't work on full speed.

Yes, it has (3) on the side and (2) on the rear = (5) total USB 2.0
PLUS.... all the onboard ports are still active!:D

    So, in total, you get (7) USB 2.0 and (2) USB 3.0 = (9) PORTS!!

    *** EDIT ***
I overlooked the rear eSATA-II port on the system, which is another USB 2.0 as well if needed so it is (8) total USB 2.0. All you need to note is that you will need a shallow USB connector since you will only have about 1 inch of space behind there once the system is docked and the spacer sleeve is retracked.

Thank you! Was trying to figure out how big of a USB hub I will need. Looks like I will need a 7 port to go with the dock. :)

I see you have some desktop speakers there, are they hooked up to the dock? I have the Logitech Z-5500 system and bought this adapter so I could use the optical connection when docked.

    Hope it works.
