Hi everyone, I am new to this forum. I will be ordering one of these laptops in the next day or 2. My main purpose of the laptop is for work and occasionally watching videos. I do a lot of browsing and emails (microsoft outlook).

I am stuck between the resolutions:

E6510 - 1920x1080 (am worried that it will be hard to read but do like the screen real estate)
a bit heavier but can deal with it

    vs

    E6410 - 1440x900 (i like the fact that it is 16:10)
    good weight

*also, how is 1600x900 on 15" vs 1440x900 on 14"

I am stuck! any opinion will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

I would stick with the E6410. Also what is your budget? The E6410 is in most cases alot cheaper than the E6510.

TH: thanks for your feedback. my budget is around $1000 give or take. Both of them fall in that category. I dont mind spending a bit more but i just want to buy the one i would be more happy with.

how come you would go with the e6410?

14.1" goes a long way vs the 15.6". The E6410 offers the power of the E6510 but in a smaller, more convenient package. My E6410 is incoming but I have used my mom's E6400 (very similar) and I have used E6500/E6510 and I just feel the 14.1" is significantly lighter. Unless you absolutely need the 1080p resolution go with the E6410.

I agree. And be cautious unless you have used a screen with similar size and resolution. Recent Windows does have a display scaling function but it doesn't work everywhere. 1600 x 900 is like 1440 x 900 with wasted space at each side (I'm using a 1600 x 900 monitor as i type this).

Given the slightly larger screen has slightly more pixels, I'd guess they are similar, object size-wise.

The 1440x900 on the 16:10 E6410 is a nice package. You would need a good reason to get the bigger E6510, imo.

TH: I agree with you regarding the size and convenient/weight. Seems like the 6410 is more popular and the 16:10 is becoming impossible to find. also the 6420 may be 16:9. That is steering be in this direction.

John: I think I have ruled out the 1600x900 on a 15" completely. It will be either the 14" 1440x900 or 15" 1920x1080p

GK: the reason why i im thinking 15" is cause my desktop is big dual monitors and i am so use to it. the comfort of having a bigger screen when im traveling or staying in a hotel or even at my office

i will be going to the store today to compare resolutions. ill keep you guys posted. thanks so much for your input so far.

Don't let 16:9 be the deciding factor between 2 laptops. I used to be a big fan of 15.4" notebooks. Then I realized they were just as heavy as 17" and were significantly heavier than 13.3" and even 14.1" notebooks. Right now for working professionals, 14.1" is the best compromising between lightness and yet still having a powerful laptop. This is shown by how many companies use the E6410/E6400 versus the E6510/E6500 or rather 14.1" notebooks vs 15.4/15.6" notebooks.

I'm betting that 1920x1080 on 15.6" will be very tiny. My M70 had 1920x1200 on 15.4", and while it was nice for viewing large documents, I can't imagine using it everyday without getting eye strain. 1440x900 on 14.1" will be much easier on the eyes.

The 14 inch laptop is really a sweet spot. It's right at the spot where you can still have fully fledged GPU, CPU, etc, and still have a laptop that travels well.

The only advantage (outside the screen) of the 15 over the 14, is the 15 supports a little beefier CPU choice, and I am not convinced quad cores are a requirement yet.

The screen could be a hamper, both laptops have the same GPU option. 512MB Quadro NVS. The higher res screens on the E6510 have more pixels for the same GPU to push around, more work to do for the same GPU solution.

Anyone considering a 15 inch, or heaven forbid one of those 17 precissions really needs to consider if what they really need is a Desktop + Netbook.

The 13 inch E4310/E4300 is the sweet spot if you never use 3D apps.
