It may sound stupid, but did you try to reinsert the DVD drive? Maybe it's just a loose connection.
Windows PE? I wanted to get rid of that toyOS.

    Edit:
The firmware version of the DVD drive might matter too. Mine is Firmware Revision: A201 according to hdparm -iI | grep Firmware
Several current Lenovo Thinkpads have the same drive, but the firmware versions follow a totally different naming convention. I'm not sure if cross-flashing might be helpful or dangerous.
    /Edit

    @Ricksto:
I have no experience with GSKILL, but there is enough free space in the M6500 for double-sided modules, as well underneath the keyboard and on the underside. But before you order your modules, you should make sure if the slots underneath the keyboard are actually present!

Picked up a couple of these kits myself for my machine. They fit fine and work well so far.

FWIW I am using the kingston hyper-x ram and they have heat spreaders

And they fit just fine. I don't think you can get much bulkier than the hyper-x for this form factor.

I'm sure the drive is in fine as reading works fine and always has. Windows PE isn't bad since it just a livecd and doesn't require installation. The pain is just getting the stupid disk created in the first place.

Maybe I'll try and find the same dvd firmware version you have and see if it works at all. If I get around to it I'll let you know.

You'll find some firmwares for the drive here:
LG GSA-U20N Firmware Downloads - Firmware HQ
Unfortunately there is no documentation available. Don't ask me for details.

    This is what Lenovo provides:
    Lenovo Support & downloads -

If you can tell me a way how to dump my firmware I could also send you this one.

    Harska,
Would like to know if AHCI ver.03 refers to A03 since you said you didn't repro this problem on it with BIOS A03?

Guys, I am just about to put an order in to Dell for one of these - I have read a lot about the lucky dip that is getting the second HHD caddy - has this now been resolved - does it come with every unit regardless of if you buy a second HHD?

Also - can anyone tell me (or provide a link/links) as to the realworld performance differences between 1066 and 1333 ram and also between the 1.6 and 1.73 processors? - main use will be handling large photoshop images and a lot of print design/web design Adobe CS3/4 work together with Capture one 4 raw processors that create 50-60mb TIFF files for editing (would be nice to play some games but not critical). Also for what I intend to use it for is there a major difference between the ATI and Nvidia 2800/3300 graphics cards?

Cheers everyone - the forum has been really useful so far.

Yes; that is correct. Bios A03 (which you can't download anymore) works fine, just as long as you don't use AHCI A04 with it. AHCI A04 will make your laptop crash during Win 7 bootup !

I didn't see any downloads on the lenovo site. Neither download from the firmwarehq allowed me to select a drive to flash.

I've tried to read through most of what was discussed about the RGBLED display but I haven't been able to figure out how to solve the issue with my unit. As others have mentioned I find the colors (especially red) to be very bright, almost neon. Sometimes I notice that red objects kind of bleed beyond their space. For example, I was viewing an image that had a red square and a green square right next to each other and the red square looked about 1 pixel large in every direction. On my old laptop the image looked normal. I also find that this screen is causing eye strain (assume it's because of the color issue).

I've tried tweaking the color settings using the nvidia control panel tool but that only helped slightly. Is there any way to dial back the colors a bit so they are less "in your face" (for lack of a better term)?
