I have read that the computer tries to monitor the capacity of the battery based on its experience, but every battery is different and batteries change over time. To get accurate numbers you have to change the settings in your computer so it will let the battery run almost down to 0 without forcing hibernation, then let the battery run almost all the way down, recharge it completely, then set the settings back to their original values. Now the computer knows what the battery should look like when it is near discharge and it knows what it should look like when fully charged and it can report accurate numbers. I've read about this online and if you want to try it I would recommend that you google it and get the exact procedure since I might not be reporting it correctly from memory.
