At the request of some of the people on this site, I am posting a couple of pics of the bottom of my E6400. Reason being, some would like to see if DELL has changed anything with regard to the thermals as this unit (T9400/Nvidia 160m) is finally running at a consistently cool temp, without the fan constantly going haywire (docked, with two external monitors).

By the way...I tried to get the bottom to fit back on snugly but it seems that the front left part (when the laptop is righ side up and facing me) is a little loose. Is there some trick to putting the back, back on properly?

Could it be a change to the mother board that is not seen by the naked eye?

Looks exactly like mine when I opened up to install a piece of RAM today. My unit does what yours does now already anyway...

Yeah, it looks exactly like what my NVS160M unit looked like as well. Possibly they finally revised the thermal solution and scrapped the thermal pad on top of the GPU? Can't really tell without side views and/or removing the heatsink...

Can anyone comment on how to close the bottom properly?
Its not on as snug as it was when I first took it off.

Is there a certain way to put it back on??

Unfortunately, I can't help you with the bottom. Mine seems to do that too. Try to apply pressure at the point where it's not sticking down correctly (maybe some latch isn't catching?), but I experience the same problem and nothing seems to help. It's like a little bulge in the front area of the notebook, right where the wlan/wwan card slots are.

I just compared your thermals to mine. They don't seem to be any different. I compared the heatsink assembly (same part #s), and fan (same part #, same revision). we would really need to see the heatsink removed. Maybe Dell is using higher grade copper in the piping, or a higher quality thermal pad/just copper? Also, maybe they're using higher quality thermal compound.

Not sure if I would know how to remove heat sink...
I will tell you this though: This is my third unit and its like apples and oranges to the rest.
No matter what I do, the temp barely changes, the fan almost never kicks into high gear and what I realized today is that the bottom of laptop is much cooler to the touch as well.

After about an hour on battery using it on my lap (wearing suit pants), my legs would get uncomfortably warm.
Now after nearly three hours of use on battery-no issues.

Something has to have been changed.

I would say its possible I had two back to back lemons, but I know plenty of other people who had issues similar to mine where the fan seemed to kick in to early and rarely shut off.
