Wow. Did he post pics of his old units? That could definitely explain all the problems he was having. Impressive on Dell's part (in a bad way) if they got that wrong twice, too.

I have a NVIDIA unit with the thicker heatpipe, but my fans go full speed whenever I have a constant ~20% or more CPU usage, even if its for a short period of time. It then takes a good 10 minutes at 10% or less CPU usage to slow down. It's very annoying! I have to crank up my speakers every time this happens...which is every time I use the notebook.

    Today's temps...running a 24" monitor, laptop display off.

When did akwit ever claim that his previous 2 systems had the thinner heat pipe ?

Those temps seem perfectly acceptable. Is it a P series or T series CPU?
It seems like I have a wünder cooling system. I can drive my 40" TV, at 1024x768 with my GPU overclocked and the system on a cooling pad (while playing GTA IV and my fan will almost never activate. It's bordering on amazing, especially compared to my old Inspiron 5150 which runs it's fan at full (5k rpm) constantly.

Sorry if I stated that as a fact. I type this on my phone, and sometimes thoughts get lost in the process.
I can't really see anything that would be indicative of another change from what he says. Perhaps they're using a better quality thermal pad or something? I just don't see any plausible reason that would create such a drop in temps that he's describing.
Akwit, can you comment on this? Does your heatpipe look the same as before?

Your GPU temps are a bit higher than normal on just normal activities...

Driving a 24" monitor? Those seem fine, especially if it's an HD 24" (like 1920x1080).

True...but my temps usually hover around the lower 50s, would a 24" HDTV really drive up temps that much?

I was talking about a 24" monitor with HD grade resolution :)
I think it would, though. Consider the multiplication. 1440x900 pixels is about 1.3 million pixels that the graphics card has to drive. With an HD monitor (1920x1080), it is close to 2.1 million pixels. That's 61% more. I could see that increasing the GPU temps that much...

P8600 2.4GHz, with arctic silver compound. The system is raised in the back by a Pacific Breeze cooler, but I haven't had the fans turned on.

It's outputting to a 1920x1200 monitor. I also should have mentioned the room temp can get around 74F/24C.

Would other E6400/160M owners say that my fans kicking on full speed in these conditions is normal?
