I'm starting to get some weird video symptoms on my Latitude D830 with the Nvidia Quadro NVS140M video. Fairly random at this point, maybe once or twice a week, the screen does something weird in terms of displaying stuff that it completely shouldn't, even during boot-up.

Don't know if this chip is a member of the family of Nvidia chips that suffers from the bugs, but has anyone else experienced this with a heavily-used Latitude D830 yet?

If I have to get a new motherboard, has Nvidia actually implemented a solution, or are they still shipping the same parts? I have ~3 years of warranty left (plus the bonus year), but I don't look forward to a motherboard replacement every year or so.

Your system is listed on the affected systems page... And no, they still use the same parts, with a modified main bios, to keep the fan on for longer times.. This increases the time before it fails... But fail it will, eventually...

Well I haven't seen anyone mention the NVS140M when referring to the defect, but, of course, the 135, and the other Nvidia chips in the XPS m1330 and Vostro lines are frequently cited.

Really unfortunate I guess... Does the problem tend to give a significant amount of advance warning that things are getting worse, or what?

One symptom I had was severe oscillations (flickering) on my second monitor this evening when I went to close a bunch of windows. Dell 2408WFP monitor, it kept doing it and eventually Vista reported that the driver had failed and restarted it..

I have a similar system and have an issue where my secondary monitor would continuously flicker when running a java program so many times. Even after I kill the program. A reboot of the laptop would fix it until I run the program again. I think it's probably both a driver and hardware problem. I previously had this problem back in January and had Dell change my motherboard. Now six months later I am having the same issue, I hate to have Dell replace my motherboard again with the same motherboard. Anyone else having a similar problem and do they have a revised motherboard with the fix out?

Pitz - Thanks for the suggestion. I blew out the exhaust fan and other vents on the laptop with some compressed air and problem seems to be fixed. I guess I'll be doing some preventive maintenance every few months.

Thanks agan - Rep points sent.

This is somewhat off-topic, but I have a D830 with the NVS 140M video card.

The laptop has a 1920x1200 LCD screen, and I'm trying to use dual-head with a 1920x1200 external display. Can't get both to work together, either in Linux or Windows, without dropping resolution on one. Is it possible to get both running at full res? The specs on Nvidia's website suggest not. But they also imply that running the laptop display at 1920x1200 is not possible, and that works just fine.

Also, I can across another post from Pitz that seems to suggest that he's got this working. Is there a trick to it?

Thats what I do here; works just fine on Windows Vista. In Linux (ubuntu), I can make it do dual-head with the stock driver (but no 3D accel), but not with the Nvidia driver with Twinview.

In Windows, definitely. Either by using the VGA out the back, or with DVI through the docking station.

On Windows, no real trick to it; just plug it in, and go.

On Linux, still haven't quite figured it out yet. But I only play around with ubuntu on a USB stick at the moment, and haven't devoted a lot of effort to it.

BTW, just re-did my whole system with Vista64. Was running Vista32 for the past 2 years. Still works great, dual WUXGA screens.

Ah. I didn't try the free xorg driver. I had only tried the Nvidia binary driver.

Hmm... Not working for me (using VGA) on XP. Might just be a matter of updating to latest drivers etc. But I very rarely use Windows, so that doesn't seem very important.

Now that I'm sure that it's possible, I'll chase this further. Especially in Linux.

    Thanks!
