I would guess this has been addressed somewhere in the appropriate owners threads, but sifting (or even searching) hundreds of pages of posts..

Definately tray load. Slot load is noisy and unreliable.

Whoever invented slot loaded should be beat up with sticks.

I actually push for being optical drive-less, but I'd rather have tray loaded.

I concur. and with tray load its normally easier to swap out for a HDD caddy or another drive such as a BD-RW

Tray load, without question. I carry around a few bootable mini-CDs and mini-DVDs with a handful of diagnostic utilities... ever try to use one of those with a slot-loader? Slot loading is just a bad idea.

Yeah tray load is better even though I sometimes feel that tray load trays are often pretty fragile at times.

OK, I will stick my neck out! I prefer slot loads but that may be because I have not yet had any problems with the ones I have (touch wood).

An interesting poll would be how often do you use it?

If Dell gave us a choice between the DVD player or more USB 3.0 ports or even just a caddy that could hold a new hard drive I would definitely choose the more ports or caddy option.

+1. My mini Disc now can't be used because Tray load type is not available at my place :(

Tray is definitely better. Considering the amount of dust that gets into the laptop and the mechanism has to grab the disk, the slot is definitely more likely to run into troubles sooner.

Slot looks like and makes it look fancy, but it's more of a liability.
