On my M6400, there is no sound coming from the speakers, both in windows and in linux. It used to come.
Sound IS coming via headphones if I plug those in.

I did the bios diagnostics and it came pass; when it went to the video test, it gave a loud beep at the prompt --- is that from the speakers ?

Are my laptop speakers fried ?

The loud beep is probably from the system speaker on the motherboard, not the speakers. If you have NBD warranty, have Dell send out a technician with speakers and a motherboard, so if replacing the speakers alone doesn't fix it, then it's the motherboard.

I was afraid of that. Unfortunately, the laptop is out of warranty.

The M6400 couldn't be out of warranty, all business systems come with a 3-year warranty standard and the M6400 isn't that old of a model.

I think it'll be worth a shot to replace the speakers and see. I found a palmrest with speakers on Ebay that was cheaper than just the speakers, so it definately couldn't hurt to have a spare palmrest in case you crack, scratch, or wear out the palmrest.

Did you check your country's version of Ebay for similar deals?
