Underclock Quadro 1700M GPU on M4400 to keep cool/save power?

I have an M4400 that's been serving me well for the past few years. I got it with the Quadro 1700M and as expected it runs pretty hot and draws a lot of power in comparison to the same machine with the Quadro 770M (which my wife has). Strangely using an application with heavy OpenGL driver use (like Maya) doesn't cause as much heat as playing back youtube videos full screen. And lately I've been doing a lot more of the latter. After a lot of video playback it gets so hot (the system fan spinning at max RPM) that the whole machine starts to become very unresponsive- I assume some automatic CPU and/or GPU throttling is going on.

The big question- is there some way to underclock the 1700M so that it matches/runs as cool as the 770M? Is the clock frequency fixed in hardware?

Lately this heat has been driving me nuts, and I definitely don't need the "full" performance of this GPU.

Are you sure that it's the GPU that is overheating? Have you already checked CPU and GPU temps using HWMonitor or similar application?

Yeah, using HWMonitor for the past week, and I get min/max temps of 34/46 for CPU, and 59/69 for GPU. The GPU is amazingly hot- I think this GPU should never have been designed into this machine.

Any ideas on under clocking it?

I tried Rivatuner and couldn't figure out how to adjust clock speed at all, and coolbits didn't seem to enable anything extra in any control panels related to the video card.

    Thanks!

63C is not a high temperature for a laptop. Definitely not one which would cause any throttling. What about the hard disk's temperature? That is one which should not reach 55C.

    The only thing hotter is:
    Dell Inc. 0P019G
    |___Temperatures
    |___THM_ min/max 46/82

However the Avg Value for the above entry seems to be 51.

Looking at HWMonitor right now the current value of everything except the GPU is ranging from 37-48, and the GPU is sitting steady at 62. It just seems to me that additively the GPU temp would be the most offensive.

The only three fans listed by HWMonitor are listed under the NVIDIA Quadro FX 1700M entry, and they seem to stay at 100%- I have never seen them say anything less.

You should be able to use nVidia System Tools to underclock the 1700. I used to do it to my 770m. The last version is 6.06 I believe. Just do a google search for it.

I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to try out essie nail polish – I wish I had sooner! Being someone who’s not really into nails, I never spend much on polish and always buy From Superdrug or Boots. The only problem with this is there isn’t really a great colour selection… Enter Essie!
