I think this is correct. For example, the iPhone will not charge if you do not have the drivers installed. The same was also true for my Motorola Razr: No charging without drivers.

And having drivers installed becomes irrelevant when the computer is turned off. Why do designers make this unnecessarily complicated?

The Iphone has different speeds of charging and requires a certain type of data connection. If it doesn't either see a active USB port of a on machine or the specific signal from there apple branded chargers it won't charge even if there is 5v on the port. It apple's usual money grubbing technique to force you to there accessories.

BUT! There is a little cable that I have been using for quite sometime now and work great for using the power share port and will charge your Iphone 2x as fast using any standard computer USB port. It basically contains a couple resisters that makes the phone think it is a apple branded charger when plugged into the USB. Normally the phone will only charge at half speed to no overload the USB bus but with this cable it charges at full speed just like the wall outlet thingy, and I have not had any problems while using it with my M4400.

To get powershare to work properly there is a bit of a process I have to go through...First nothing can be in the powershare port while I am shutting down, and I must do a full shut down and power complete off, then plug in device and it charges!

Oh yah here is the cable: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/travelpower/b43f/

PS with that cable it will now charger with anything that has a USB port on it, ie TVs, cars, monitors, etc

There's sound sound logic behind needing to plug in the device after you have shut down (or hibernated) the computer. This is to indicate to the computer that you want the device to be charged and it is not just something left attached to the port.

 Darn thing doesn't work for me either. iDevices, Verizon MiFi and my Sony Ericsson C905 phone will not charge.

I'm going to try the cable suggestion.

    Which computer?

Note that, for reasons best known to Dell, the charging while off facility is not provided in the new E series.
