Using 150W adapter instead of the original 65W one

    Hi!

I am thinking of using my Dell 150W adapter for an E6420 which came with an original 65W brick, in order not to carry the latter with me all the time. I know that in theory this should not be a problem (same voltage, and the E6420 bios recognizes the 150W adapter as "legit"), yet I am concerned not with the compatibility of the parts but, rather, with the impact of the big adapter on battery life.

From what I've heard, using a powerful adapter may increase the battery charging rate and, as a result, may diminish its life. Is this still a danger with new (Dell) models?

Higher wattage only means that the adapter is capable of providing more current. If there is no need for more power, it will run at a lower wattage.

You may experience a decrease in battery life if ExpressCharge is available, but this depends on both your BIOS configuration and AC adapter. If you want to prolong the life of the battery, make sure it's disabled in the BIOS and the AC adapter won't make a difference.

thanks. expresscharge is disabled. good to know this means the battery will charge at the same rate as with a less potent brick.
