Get which one you like the most, thats usually the way it works, any of them will be fine, so will linux, your not stuck with whatever comes preinstalled on it.:)

You should get Windows 7 64-bit. If you want to play with another OS, use Virtual PC to not have to mess around with messy dual-booting. ;)

4GB should be sufficient unless you want to run multiple of them. Single 4GB modules are quite expensive though, so 6GB or 8GB are cost-prohibitive.

You won't need 6-8GB's of Ram. 4GB's should be suffice. Unless you plan on running multiple instances of Virtual PC's. - Just like Robin24k said.

My work laptop is a D830, Windows 7 works great.
If I was upgrading it myself, I'd probably install an SSD.

I have currently installed on my D830:

    Ubuntu 10.04 beta x64
    Ubuntu 9.04 x64
    Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit)
    Windows XP SP3 (32-bit)

All four operating systems run without a problem. The Ubuntus and Win 7 support all hardware of my D830 out of the box, Win XP requires you to install a ton of drivers and reboot your system at least ten times.

Booting: Ubuntu 10.04 boots in under 25 seconds (standard 7200 rpm drive), Ubuntu 9.04 and Win 7 clock in at the 40 second mark (usable desktop), Win XP takes just under two minutes (again, to the usable desktop). BTW: multi-booting with GRUB is not messy at all! ;)

Performance: Usual office work is fast and fluent on all four OS. HD Video (1080p H.264) works extremely well on Ubuntu 10.04 (using NVidia CUDA, less than 20% CPU load), does not work well on XP or Ubuntu 9.04 for me. Have not tried HD video on Win 7 yet.

Bottom Line: I would no longer recommend XP, unless you run software or (external) hardware that does not play nicely with Win 7. Unfortunately, this maybe more likely than you think before actually trying it. Windows Vista: naaaahhhh. Ubuntu 10.04 (once the final is released at the end of the month) or Win 7 seem to be the best choices to me.

I will NOT recommend Ubuntu 10.04 over Win 7 or vice versa - since I am not into flame wars... :D
