Approaching 4 years with my Vostro 1500 and it is still kicking and running like a champ as my primary computer (including gaming).

I just wanted to see what you are doing with yours.

My Vostro 1500 is used as a secondary gaming laptop (G71GX is the primary laptop right now). A CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD upgrade made it into quite a beast. Still looking a WUXGA screen upgrade.

    Here!

My Vostro 1500 is over 3 years old and is rock solid. And since it's a 15.4" screen I have no plans to retire it. :)

Ya and WUXGA > terribad 1080p screens these days. Wish Vostro 1500 was LED though or had an option.

The only thing i've done to my laptop in the 3 years is clean the inside 3 times and change the paste once. The Vostro 1500 and 1700 were built like tanks. If the GPU fails just drop in a new card. I have punished my 8400m GS and still no issues.

I still have my 1700 as a backup. Alas I am fine with the WXGA format. I have a T60 that I purchased with the 1680x1050 screen and I regret it. Everything is too small. 1280x800 is just fine for me and my V1700 is 1400x900.

Hrm my 8400M GS was pushed hard for 3+ years of intense gaming, not a failure. Big jump to the 8600M GT.

1280x800 is kinda low for me, I can hardly fit any webpages side by side and 800 pixels is kinda poor for office work. I was looking at WSXGA+ vs WUXGA and the difference is literally 15 dollars for the panel.

My ASUS G71GX has 1440x900 and that has the same issues, just too small resolution for a 17.1" laptop. :(

Woulda, coulda, shoulda bought the 8600m GT on Ebay when they were going for $37.95 plus $9 shipping and they were brand new. But yeah the videocards in the 1500 and 1700 hold up extremely well. The 1400's on the other hand were a train wreck.

Ya you still can. I bought mine for 43 shipped, worked out perfectly fine. Vostro 1400 was the same thing as Inspiron 1420, and had the GPU soldered on.

I don't have the Vostro 1500, but I've been using a secondhand D630 that I bought over a year ago as my main computer, and its been excellent. It unfortunately succumbed to the Nvidia bug soon after I bought it, but I got it replaced under warranty, and its been chugging along nicely since. I can see myself using this old computer until it dies; performance has been fantastic and I don't really find myself needing more power. Perhaps an SSD in the future sometime.

Really quite amazing how powerful computers are these days.
