Why are new Precisions and Latitudes sooo ugly?

I'm not sure if I am the only person feeling this way, but I think the older "rugged" and bold design is much better than the new designs.... the new design is too roundy and the hinge parts/screen area just does not have any appeal of either simplicity (like apple) or complexity (like AW or SXPS 16)..

Furthermore, the SXPS 16 looks much better than the new xps line in my opinion... But is the general public pleased with the new designs or did Dell just make awful mistakes??? urgggg i was trying to get the new M4600 but I really am not sure.....

What's wrong with the new Precisions? Much better looking than the new Latitudes. Apple, Alienware, and SXPS are all niche markets, and cannot compare to the market of say the Latitude.

To be honest, I'm glad Dell eliminated the Studio line. The design was ugly IMO, slot loaded drives are major fail, and they were overpriced for what they offered. SXPS had it's string of issues, and normal Studios that were sitting on desktops would suddenly just bust right open. I think the new XPS line is much better looking than the Studio XPS, they went for a more matte finish than that horrible glossy look on the SXPS.

For Latitudes, I actually like the older D series than the newer E series, though I prefer like the E6400/E6410 over the new E6420. The D series just feels better built than the E series, though I think the big and bulkiness was the main sell, whereas the E series went back to a traditional notebook design. Adunno why Dell couldn't just keep with the E6410 body style.

What exactly are you basing your feelings on? I doubt the old Latitudes/Precisions are better built than their new iterations, especially from preliminary reports that the new ones have been designed to even take on the legendary Toughbooks (even if they don't win, it's definitely a big step up). As for looks, the answer to that is they're subjective.

I think Dell's best designs were the XPS m1330 and XPS m1530 (with the integrated graphics at least in the case of the m1330 as nvidia chips were prone to burst into flames). I also prefer the current e6410 design to the new one's

yes thats what I meant i guess that the looks are just subjective. cause i was reading another thread about the new SB latitudes and although many people thought the precisions were great, but the latitudes have horrible design.

That's the problem with people. They all have their own opinions about what is appealing to them. I have seen a few threads where people think the Latitudes are great and not great and people seem to push their opinions. Even you chose to be selective with what you posted - "reading another thread...precisions great...latitudes horrible". So far your thread is the only one that was completely one sided as far as opinion. The other threads that I have read seem to have a mix of opinions on the looks.

My opinion is that I like what I see overall. Look and feel are tough to do based on just pictures. You can certainly look, but you can't always see textures. You certainly can't get a feel for the machines until they are in your hands.

I do respect your opinion on the looks of the machines. Hopefully you can respect my approach as well.

Although I do find new Latitudes looking consumerish and ugly to some extent (Im more used to D600/E6400 design) Precisions on the other hand have nice design, but like Latitudes visually appear to be rather thick, too thick for their design and visual appearance IMO.
Latitude E6320 on the other hand looks great and thin.

People are use to years of the old clunky square monotone grey and black Latitudes and don't like the new curves, silver highlights, and mil-standard durability. So they threaten not to buy one and call them ugly, consumerish, made of plastic, designed by children,... whatever they can to register their discomfort with change. It's a common reaction. :D

Initially, I didn't like the design of the E-series as well, but gradually, I've gotten to like it more (especially with the E6410 minor changes, such as extra bumpers). I'm sure the same will be true of the redesign here as well, and first-generation designs will always have its problems, but I'm afraid the 16:9 is something I won't be able to get over.

pretty accurate explanation now that I think about it. one thing for sure the designs are sorta "radical"
