I would think this is a lottery type situation, i got my 1070/6700hq from dell outlet and it runs very cool (lower tdp gpu/cpu but it runs perfect).

I'm not seeing a need for 32gb of ram lol, id go for quality over quantity. -
I would go for the 32gb because then both ram sticks are from the same brand. I tend to like Corsair for stability but Dell does not deliver quality up gradable components but they will charge there price.
Example PCie NVMe SSD Toshiba vs what you can get for the same $$ Samsung 960 EVO
Example: thermal paste (for some time they just put toothpaste on... they changed it recently.
Example: RAM...
Example: wireless Card. killer is having problems with windows 10 so I think most people are opting for intel 8265. -
Not sure I would call it fantastic but its kind of what I expectes. Its just a bag after all

@Gov. Rick Perry well the 32gb would be from g skill and has a very good amazon rating
https://www.amazon.com/G-SKILL-Ripj...=1490606557&sr=8-14&keywords=32gb+ddr4+sodimm (here in austria right now for 170€ every other brand around 230+€)
@AllOfYou
does aw offer superior quality? or would you recommend to opt for higher clocked ram instead? or just buy another 8gb module and add it to the one that's allready in there?
is it a problem to have two modules from different brands?
Lots of questions i know, sry

oh for sure its some good ram and if you have the cash to spend go for it, was just stating that 32gb of ram isn't necessary for your uses and maybe spending that money on another ssd or something else would be a better investment. -
@Gov. Rick Perry that's a good point actually. my only actual concern is the "two different brands" thing. i ordered it with only 8gb because it would have been double the price to upgrade to 16gb than what a single 8gb module costs on amazon.

I understand the OCD aspect of that lol, i couldn't do it...but technically i don't think it would be a problem (same spec ram). Not aware of pricing in Austria unfortunately, so my advice may not apply...i know i am spoiled on this side of the world. -
@Gov. Rick Perry ok xD then here's another question for you: 123€ for 2x8gb @2400MHz or 169€ for 2x16gb @2133MHz? you can just change the eurosign to $ and you basically have US prices.

I should clarify. I have the vindicator in my possession. I am not looking to skimp. If someone shows me the right bag Id spend 200+. I don't see the vindicator 2.0 holding up with the heavy use the bag will be put through by me. I have other backpacks from North face, Kenneth Cole, and ogio to name a few. It just doesn't appear to be in the same quality class. This is my personal opinion.improwise and Pete Light like this.

Ah fair enough those are some nice bags!

Ugh, well that stinks I wonder whats their reasoning behind the cancellation. -
Right click on the desktop, Click Intel graphics settings then click on Power icon and finally set the graphics performance on battery to Max battery life and also select extended battery life for game under global settings.MSGaldenzi likes this.

I agree with you. The vindicator is a great bag for the money. I used the 1.0 version to carry around a SLI Sager 9380-s and i abused the hell out of it. I drive tractor trailers and move construction equipment around. So that bag managed to survived being dragged around construction sites in the dirt/mud/rain along with banging around in the cab of my truck for almost 2 years. I use the 2.0 version now for my r4 and its just as well made. I went though a few bags before i found the vindicator and its by far one of the most well padded bags out there. The main reason i preferred it over any other bag is its padded where it needs to be and holds just enough without feeling like i have a suitcase strapped to my back.Pete Light likes this.

So I benchmarked bf1 with fraps (balanced power plan instead of power saving
) and my fps where:
2017-03-25 01:48:45 - bf1
Frames: 128854 - Time: 1620625ms - Avg: 79.509 - Min: 53 - Max: 122
2017-03-26 21:00:33 - bf1
Frames: 115505 - Time: 1373625ms - Avg: 84.088 - Min: 61 - Max: 121
Are this fps ok for a 6700hq + gtx1070?
Also did anyone with sky lake tested Alienware_15R3_17R4_S1.0.12_K1.0.8 instead of Alienware_15R3_17R4_S1.0.12_K1.0.5 ? I had issues with the k1.0.5 version, basically with temps because both FANs RPMs where caped + had poor video performance in games. Yesterday I gave k1.0.8 a try and temps / FANs RPMs where back to normal and had a little increase in GPU performance as stated
-
Doh! Mine is the 29th.

What is your overall budget for upgrades on the laptop ? id go with 32gb just because the price difference is so little and 2133 vs 2400 inst much of a difference.
But if your on a Limited budget and want to do other things id get 16gb then spend the 40ish euros on maybe supplies for a repaste (if you need it), notebook sleeve or backpack, etc.
DDR4 in gaming benchmarks -
Sounds about right to me. Thats a 20-25% difference compared to my 105fps average im seeing. The GTX 1080 is about 20% faster than the 1070 and the higherclock speeds of the 6820hk would add a few frames to that number. So i would say you are right where you are supposed to be.etonomico likes this.

Are you guys from the US? I have a date of the 28th too but havent received a tracking number.

Yes, US. Michigan.

Absolutely love my new Mother-ship.... lol
Only thing... is 1. They installed the OS on the damn HDD, which turned into a complete cluster f**k. But I have that sorted.. My only thing now, is my right side USB port is dead. It's like those broken iPhone charger cables, and it'll BARELY work at the right angle.. anyways, how do I go about fixing it? Or do I have to give Dell a call? The drives I put into it get SUPER hot after just a minute or two... and there is no recognition of it being connected.
Thanks in advance. -
I got a DHL global tracking. That says 28th as well. All the times were in Shanghai time till it hit the US. It was confusing to follow -
So I just pulled the trigger on a r4 17" i7-7820HK GTX 1080. Feels good

Thank you! Very excited

Does the alienware come with software to monitor fps/temps pre installed? If not whats the best one.

hwinfo64 is good for watching temps.
intel extreme tuning utility is useful for a graph of your cpu's temperature and seeing waht speed it is running at.
the best one for gpu perfromance i think is gpu-z. It will show a graph of your gpu's usage. If its below 95% you can assume that your cpu is the bottleneck. If its higher your gpu is the bottleneck and you can lower graphics settings for increased fps if you like.
Usually the best option for showing fps is an option that is unique in each game. You should look them up for the games you play. -
removed double post

Looks ok but that time is well too much as a lot of the average will be skewed by the 120 FPS on the loading screens and menus. I'd just benchmark one map start to finish

Thats exactly what I did, I was avoiding load screens and menus, just remember my system is 6700hq + gtx1070 @2560x1440 Dx11Pete Light likes this.

Tbh in my opinion you can do everything but the FPS in hwinfo and for the FPS I use FRAPS and it works for everything (except 4K HDR gaming)

That's bang on then i'd say

You can use Hwinfo and RTSS [Framerate monitoring, On-Screen Display and high-performance videocapture service provider for other graphics card utilities].

Guys i'm a bit bit new to gaming laptops (used to play on PC back in the day, now mostly ps4) but my asus fried last week so i thought i might as well get back to some solid gaming. So here's the question: planning to get the i7 7820hq gtx 1080 version, BUT should i get it with the ram and ssd provided by dell or upgrade myself? If so, what brands, models? Sorry if this was asked before, it's a chore browsing on a cellphone...
-
I agree. The quality is very good on the 2.0.
It depends. What cpu / gpu did you have in your 775?
::iunlock:: -
Hi iunlock i have 6700k with GTX 1080 . I can't get good temp over 4.4 Ghz and also not much OC with GTX 1080 . Best what i had was 4.4 Ghz temps arround 75-80 and GPU +150 Core +250 Memory and temps arround 80-85 :/ . I love both laptops lol but can't afford to have 2 toys for gaming lol . I'm testing right now AW 17 R4 6820HK with GTX 1080 . Still can't decide :/ .
My AW is refurb from resller on ebay and temps are fixed i think..... when i played Battlefiled 1 for example my tems did reach just below 80c . No OC on AW just Stock Clocks
I use laptop for gaming(Battlefiled 1,4) and normal use . -
You cannot see a graph of your gpu usage for example in overwatch i used about 50% of my gpu during the game but during character select it ramps to 100%. I would have no idea if I used hwinfo unless i had 2 screens.
-
You can set up all required/wanted hardware info right on the screen if you use Hwinfo + RTSS. All that information that appears in Hwinfo can be put straight in the screen in real time. No need for two monitors.openglcg likes this.

Hi
Just got my replacement unit. The core temperature difference is gone in this one, and I also got a Samsung ssd instead of a toshiba in my first unit. That's a win-win haha.
The only thing that I'm not 'happy' is the screen. My first unit the 4k screen had a blueish tone, I really enjoyed the colors in that display. My actual display has way more red and I think it's not ideal. Any way or profile to change that calibration? -
So has anyone tested the AW 17 R4 1080 with 7820hk? Mine is scheduled to be exchanged. Had a 6820hk with 1080 before with temp issues and battery drain issue (under load).
-
I don't think it's a bad bag. I ended up buying 3 different ones to do a comparison. Alienware that is already in my possession is nice but lacking some things I like on other backpacks.
Ended up buying vindicator 2.0, everki Titan, fitmark envoy(don't think it will fit in this one but they claim it will and the quality of these bags are great).
If anyone wants pictures of any of these bags let me know. I should have all 3 by Friday. -
So it looks like a lot of us will be getting the new 17R4 in tomorrow.
Stay tuned for some initial stock testing...
By the way, for those who are getting the Kaby 17R4 tomorrow (Wednesday) please do the following and post up the results in the
[CPU + GPU Temperatures + Benchmarks] - Alienware 17 R4 / 15 R3
thread and here in the lounge if you'd like...
-
Tests to run:
CPU Tests:
1. wPrime v1.55 - 1024M run, bone stock.
2. wPrime v1.55 - 1024M run, max fan profile.
3. wPrime v1.55 - 1024M run, Undervolted (to your liking, but please specify your UV amount) on stock fan profile.
4. wPrime v1.55 - 1024M run, Undervolted with max fan profile.
GPU Tests:
1. Fire Strike - Basic run, bone stock.
* Take screen shots and use hwinfo64. Have it show all the relevant info. such as, CPU temps (all four cores), Voltages, Package power etc...
* Upload the pics to somewhere else like: imgur, google etc... then link it here.

What's on my mind right now -> "Man the new Kaby model better live up to the bars that the Asus G701VI has set. Just sayin'...." -
Mine got moved to 6.04
-
Damn. That's really delayed -
In the mean time he could wait for 17 r5.
-
So, I've received AW 17R4 7820HK + 1080.
The display model is AUO1496 (as already mentioned here before). And yes, it's without banding.
Monitor name from HWiNFO: B173QTN, part no. JYWWF
Will do some tests and report here and in the iunlock's thread.
