The readme of the oc vbios states that it is intended for skylake with bios 1.0.12. So I wont play the guinea pig here and brick my system in the end. Maybe the kaby revisions already habe the unlocked vbios? Maybe brother @iunlock knows more about it?

I along with the team are extensively testing the bios as well so we'll keep you guys posted with the findings.
Right now on the new system it came with bios 1.0.5 and so far things seem to be okay....
I'm testing as we speak.... stay tuned.

Oh I am. I have the page open on my laptop sitting in the living room with my family like a true nerd - my wife is making fun of me. She will never understand. Here? We are all equal. Thank you for your support. Haha.bsch3r, Vasudev, andyman404 and 1 other person like this.

What I'm most concerned about is how the temps are (during long sessions) in the Kaby Lake AW 17 R4?
-
I'll be posting the temps soon, but as for long term sessions with gaming etc.... a repaste is a must and that recommendation (which to us is mandatory) still applies no matter how good the temps may seem on the stock system.
I can say though that the temps are much better than the previous variant. With a full wPrime run, it maxed at 76C, but that is bone stock. Therefore, for those keep it stock, not too shabby...nerdstaz likes this. -
Yup I'm going to get it repasted. I was about to get mine done by Mobius when I got the email that Dell is replacing my system with the Kaby Lake one!

Hi guys any inputs regarding the 17r4 w 6700hq gtx1070 and qhd120hz panel? Looking to pick one up at the outlet. Will temps be better than the 15r3 and does this have the whole cpu temp issue? Also how is the screen compared to the msi 120hz 1080p panel?

Well, stock out of the box I ran a Firestrike of 15504 with bios 1.05. Upgraded to the latest Bios and VBios. Overclocked CPU via Bios to 4.4 on all cores, then over clocked GPU with Afterburner to +180 core clock and nothing on Memory clock. Firestrike only 18184 with a Graphics score of 22799. Temps on the last segment of the Firestrike Benchmark hit 93 CPU and 96 GPU. I'm a bit disappointed.

hi everyone
im got this 17 r4 like a month already
and just about a week ago i repaste it
i get the gtx 1070 with i7 7700HQ with FHD +tobii panel
16GB DDR4, 256+1TB
and i test it with AIDA64 and monitor it with HWinfo
this is before repaste (sorry i forgot to capture it and just took a photo)
and this is after repaste with traditional paste grizzly kryonaut
this result is really annoying me, im not getting any significant result, its just give me the same thermal score, i just hate to see the 91C in the GPU and the CPU score just give me almost the same score.
and FYI im not did the repaste by myself, it was the dell service center. so it really give me a headache -
If you go to 16:25 that hands down beats the OC'ed Asus g701vi at 4.5ghz with fans on full blast. If you repaste you'd most likely be set.
-
If you undervolt the CPU and GPU with programs like XTU or throttlestop it will help reduce temps even more. Try that
-
yeah but i never had experience with undervolt or overclock lol
and still im just stil curious how can @iunclock get so much cooler temps than mine
is changing the pads really that important?
and still i changed from like a stamp paste from dell to grizzly and im still not getting any result so its really frustating.
btw thanks for your reply, i really appreciate it -
I've been using RAID0 with x2 1TB 850 Evo's since I've had my machine and it's solid; the overall throughput is in line with what you'd expect from both drives in RAID0 ... about x2 speed across the board ... wish I'd sprung for the 850 Pro though ... the EVO's are okay but not as fast as I thought they might be ... and I just mean "perceived" speed/response. My Crucial M550 mSATA RAID0 array on my old GS70 was quite noticeably faster than these SATA3 EVO's ...
I've been using RAID0 in every rig I've owned, going all the way back to the SCSI days ... just love having giant, super fast storage....improwise likes this. -
can you show us pictures of the screen and angles and RGB coloring etc .. ?

Someone already posted pics, but to me, the first pic showed scan lines. I'm still not sold on the screen yet.
My area is pretty slim for AW in a best buy.
I want to see a 1440p screen in person at a BB. If I can find one, how can I determine if it is the new panel?xxax likes this. -
You GPU seems really high. I have my 1080 overclocked +180 on the core with the new bios and ive never seen over 68c. You sure you put enough paste on there?
-
oh i forgot to mention
my BIOS still in 1.0.2
is it because the BIOS ? wanna upgrade to 1.0.12 but some says still too many bugs ?
actually Dell service center put it, and i saw it by myself, and yes they put thick enough i think. -
The bios has never effected my GPU temps. I think something is up with the contact on there, id open it back up just to make sure.
-
thats what i think too
but even before the repaste the GPU temps already reach that 91 and nothing change after the repaste, same thing goes to CPU temps its still reach above 81.
do you think this one defect or something ? -
Could be, the only real way to know for sure would be to open it up yourself and take a look at the paste job. To me it just sounds like they didnt put enough paste on it or just put some crappy paste on it. I wouldnt really trust the job of a dell rep to be honest, from what i read they dont seem to have a great of a track record doing repastes. Id try repasting with kyronaut and be generous with it. The heatsink is big enough that you really dont have to worry about "putting to much". If that doesnt fix it, then there must be something up with your heatsink in general.
-
i see
actually the paste was grizzly cause they agreed to use my paste lol
but still i'll try to open it by myself and maybe repaste it again
thank you neal
regards -
I saw the photos and saw a post on reddit where they were reposted - what you see is NOT scanlines. It is the effect you will get anytime you take a close picture of an LCD. That photo looked great. If you actually had the banding issue - you really know what to look for. It was a bit worse on my system than some of the others and I was happy to see the results of the photo. Just some words of experience!MogRules likes this.

Your cpu temps are ok, and the core temps difference is good,
however there is either a heatsink issue with the gpu or you have a faulty gpu as 91 is too high for pascal, it should be around 62-70c in the a17. Id contact technical support. Once you sort the heat issue with your gpu it should also lower you cpus temps a little (5c) -
I have 2 of the 78020HK/1080GPU units that I purchased with the last P@W deal - 1 for me and 1 for the wife. Anyhow, on the first one I was able to get 4.4 on the CPU with no problem but the system would blue screen on 4.5. For increasing the voltage, does everyone use the bios? For the GPU, I was able to increase 200 on the core and 375 on the memory. Getting the 2nd unit ready for tests now.

wow! those are amazing temps and very nice OC on the GPU -
The first pic is an OLD PANEL for comparison purposes.. Please, read the comments below photos...

Two weeks ago arrived my 17r4 with your spec. I must say that gpu temps are super.. Never more than 60 but cpu some cores over 80..than i undervolt about 0.12V and while Gaming never more than 70_73.... I dont do repasteMogRules likes this.

I have 1070 plus 180 core 200 mam. 19000 graphic firestrike but temp never more than 60...everybody says about High temp gpu.. I monitor this with afterburner.. Its chance that afterburner has wrong sensor

I got my replacement system with the 7820-HK cpu and GTX 1080. New system has Samsung memory and a 1tb Lite-On m.2 SSD (Toshiba controller?)
Old system has Hynix memory and the Toshiba branded SSD...
Suggestions on which to keep and which components to send back?

I got one of these (refurbished 6700hq 1070 120hz qhd (AUO1096 is model B173QTN is name in hwinfo) )
The temps were decent when I got it. In the 70s peak cpu temp long gaming tests. 15c differential between cores.
Ive tried repasting with kryonaut and good thermal pads but saw only a little improvement over stock paste and no improvement on core differential.
I think i need to change from using 1mm pads to .5mm pads in one spot but havent tried yet.
Don't know much about the screen. Barely use it. The lines don't bother me at all but they are very noticeable on light grey backgrounds. Has no light bleed at all.jpsm likes this. -
Hey all! Joining the club (again)! Last Alienware I had was an m18x R1. Before than, m17x R1. Today I bought an AW 17 R4 for myself, and one for my brother! I posted in the shopping advice subforum asking if this was a good deal, but I figure I'll ask those who know the laptop best. I got the Microsoft Office 365s for free with a coupon and the laptops have warranties with 363 days remaining on the Dell website!
Anyway, if ya'll sign off on it I'm gonna keep it for sure. Loving it so far. It doesn't have the 4K display, but beggers can't be choosers. I have a nice 4K TV that I can hook up to when I want to game (another price mistake)!
tl;dr: I bought an R4. Hello!
-
Hello everyone, I considering to replace my AW 17 w/GTX660m. Looking forward to impressions from those who have received the new AW 17 R4 w/ i7-7820 and GTX1080. How are the thermals on the new configuration?
-
Having problems with the TACTX program right out of the box with the new machine.. Anyone else have this problem?
I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled the AW Command Center and it gives me the same error...
Also, is Dell not setting the default windows background image to the Alien anymore? My machine had the default windows background... Not a big deal, but...
-
Nice! you'll struggle to run 4K mid to high settings with a 1070 though

Any idea on the response time of the panel? On the msi its 5ms so i am hoping its the same more or less. I know the aw has 400nits so its better

I was looking through bestbuy but they dont seem to have the 120hz panel.

i received mine today (7820hk gtx 1080). played the witcher for about 2h max temps went up to 93 92 92 93 °C without overclocking... any suggestions? i'm not sure if i want to do a repaste, i don't want to harm warranty. (according to the delltech i spoke to regarding the tempissues of my previous unit it would harm the warranty)
-
Ha - well at least your core temps are EVEN
My 6th gen has 10 degree spreads and after 30 min Witcher my tems were high 80's to mid 90's. Have 7th gen in production and other than screen it appears we have the same "HOT" issues we had before.
-
Well at least the numbers are all close to each other.
But at that temp you will hit thermal throttle sooner or later so a repaste or at the very least an underfoot would help you. -

If that is the max temperature, but not the average temperature then *personally* I wouldn't worry. Despite the system having heat spikes, that usually last for a second or two, the 17 R4 was built to quickly bring those temps down.Vasudev likes this. -

I tried it out today. Most of this is a subjective review. My standard of comparison is the vg248qe which is what I use for daily gaming and is measured independently to have good total input lag. The 120hz qhd had good response times and could be considered competitive for gaming in terms of its total response time, being outclassed significanly only by the new 240hz screens. Using gsync was awful with horrible input lag. Vsync was actually slightly better but still not acceptable for competitive gaming. Nvidia fastsync was a decent option giving close to vsync off responsiveness with no tearing. Vsync off was the lowest response time but tearing was noticeable. I would personally still prefer vsync off for overwatch but I care about personal performance over all else. All in all it seems in line with its reported stats (5ms 120hz) and was only slightly worse than the 144hz vg248qe, not really justifying placement in a different tier. Just to mention it again there are stripes appearing on the screen that are most noticeable on shades of grey. For me the effect is something that I can easily notice at times and completely not notice at other times looking at the exact same image. If you are likely to be bothered by this sort of thing then avoid it. Many will probably not mind at all but many will probably mind to the point of returning the computer.

Awesome thanks! Might pick one up at the outlet and if i dont like it i guess ill just return it! If i get a decent 15r3 with acceptable temps then i might not get a 17r4. Any idea on the ms of those 15r3? I plan to play dota2 thats why i want the best possible screen for my next gaming laptop. The gsync ips screen on my 770dm was ok but input lag was kinda noticeable.

Can anyone confirm if the new 17R4 fits into an Everki Titan backpack ?
Appreitate it. -
Yea the defective design flaw is unfortunate, but the Kaby unit on mine at least, stock, reaches high 70C's under full load with a core differential of ~8C.
When I unlock the power limits, it's a different story, but the max on Core 0 and 2 hit low 90C's, while the others are in the high 80C's. It's still not good, but it's better than the skylake model's.
Of course, I would never leave these systems stock, no matter if the temps were good or not.... LM is a must for some of us.
Have you seen the stock wPrime runs I did on the Kaby lake? Not too shabby. At 44x, this AW 17R4 Kaby already beat the Asus that was at 45x.
Oh btw, after LM I'm pretty optimistic that this will hold 46x....I've already got it tuned and it holds, but dips due to the thermals...as it is still stock, but there's head room and it's sitting comfortable at 46x .... I'll keep everyone posted.
Lots more to come....Vasudev likes this.
