What are these options (with the new Bios)?

    1. Alienware Dominator application support.
    2. Nvidia MaxQ Graphic support.

Well I went through them rather quick but saw nothing new, it fixed my BD PROCHOT from proccing, where it normally flags in 3minutes in game.

    1. Not yet released software(pherhaps to overclock)?
    2. Support for the "new" MaxQ TDP downtuned GPU's.

Can someone explain why during a stress test the CPU almost maxes out utilization, no throttling and stable (although high) temp.

When I play a game, I get around under 50% utlization yet temps hit the 100 barrier and I get thermal throttling?

[edit] GPU does reach 91 degrees.

In short, because when you play, CPU and GPU are both producing heat.

Hooked up my rift in the hotel room. The hmd, and 3 sensors all plugged into an anker usb3.0 hub. Worked fine.

My only complaint was from reception calling me that the person below complained I'm making noise (it was only 6pm and I was only moving furniture around). Didn't spend too much time playing as the guy below is probably extremely sensitive. [IMG]

Ah thank you, that makes total sense. I'm just trying to find a way to manage these temps until I get round to the repaste, but undervolting the CPU isn't going to help if the GPU is still going over 90...

When you game, both cpu and gpu produce a lot of heat and because of the shared heatsink design, the temperature is going to be higher. Also, gpu temperature at 91C is totally unacceptable. Even with the stock stamp paste, it shouldn't reach that high. Something is very wrong with your heatsink and thermal paste. You urgently need to have them checked out

Im looking to order either a 15R3 or 17R4 and am looking at the following two systems:

    http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/comput...7-17-3-gaming-laptop-silver-10157227-pdt.html
    http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/comput...-15-15-6-gaming-laptop-grey-10157226-pdt.html

I am trying to decide if the extra £100 would be well spent buying the 17. Im not bothered about the weight difference as they are both heavy and im not going to be carrying it around with me much. Basically it comes down to which of them is the better spec and value for money as i cant tell.

You know, I had this problem when I switched from "Balanced" to "High Performance" mode on my system without rebooting. Don't know why, but I experienced reproducible temp spikes when doing this. If I booted to High Performance, or rebooted after switching to High Performance, those temp spikes decreased. Running BIOS just before most recent release that added MaxQ support. Anyhow, see if that does anything

Nah, that's a great deal. Those temps are pretty normal. Most of the other things you've mentioned I've seen on my own unit. The sound problems started with the latest Windows 10 anniv update. I think the sound driver software has an incompatibility. But, like you said, just muting and unmuting fixes it right away. Wish I'd figured that out earlier - was rebooting the computer every time. Most Batts will drop 5% in the first week anyhow. Mine was at a 5% wear level almost right away but has stabilized there now for the last couple months and as long as the backlight is working, I'd say you're good to go. You literally got the system for like half price.

When I bought my 17 R4, I went direct to Dell and haggled a 15% discount with a sales guy through the web chat. Much cheaper than going through currys. You can spec better warranty too then, which is defo a wise choice!

Finally pulled the trigger and I have brought a 17R4. Spent all week researching what i was going to buy, going back and forth between various different systems but i have always really wanted an Alienware. I was all set to buy a 15R3 but at last minute thought i would enjoy a bigger screen. Is there anything in particular i should do once i get it set up i.e what software should i install/remove etc and what is the best way to check if the thermals are working as they should?

With every new system I've got, I format them immediately and start with a fresh Windows installation. Might be overkill for AW because they usually don't come with a lot of bloat, but I figure it's clean. In terms of temps, your best bet is load up a game and track temps and see if anything is throttling. I've been pretty happy with the R4. I had an R2 and it throttled constantly until I had the board replaced. This one the temps have been good. I'm on the 1070 so not experiencing the issues with the OC 1080 vBIOS. Intel XTU can monitor CPU temps/throttling. GPUz can monitor GPU temps.

Hey - just received a shiny new 17R4 with the 7820HK & 1080. It's still stock, not OC, with BIOS and drivers updated. Just doing basic tests/bench before I repaste and reinstall Win and was curious about the fans.

Overall I'm very happy with what I've received: I'm not seeing issues so far with core differentials or high GPU/CPU temps. However the fans seem to kick into high speed (4200RPM) pretty quickly even though the temps don't seem particularly high.

Eg: after 2 min in GTA V - CPU/GPU temps are in hovering near 50C, yet CPU/GPU fan are already at 4200/4300 RPM (what I'm assuming is high speed mode after looking at HWiINFO) respectively - and making a reasonably noisy 50 - 60 dB. I've not enabled performance mode for the fans in BIOS btw.

Only a min or 2 after shutting the game down they're back in low speed and barely making a sound - yet CPU/GPU temps are only back a few degrees....

Is this normal? I was under the impression that others were seeing fans kick into high gear considerably later / hotter core/CPU temp?

Finally got my 17R4. Felt like the right time to upgrade. The 1080 rocks! And man the 960 EVO is sweet, I'm not used to that kind of performance!

The temps are a bit high even after repasting with Kryonaut, but I guess that's normal. CPU isn't hitting 100C at least, mostly sits around 85C while gaming. Before repaste I saw 100C.

I still prefer the look of the M18x, but I'll get used to it. The side LEDs look cool. The screen is a bit more difficult to open, though, there is nothing to grab on to.

While I was repasting I noticed that there are a couple of screws missing, some tech got lazy. No big deal, but do you think Dell support will send me a replacement set?

woot 5700rpm, that's some nice fans you got, at 4300rpm my fans are around 40 db at eye level. Use hwinfo for sensor monitor it also has fan control although it is abit buggy atm

hwinfo max fan is lower than system max fan

only way to get absolute max is by using fan performance mode in the bios

Finally received my 17R4 today and I have to say so far I have been so very impressed with it. Since ordering I have been a little apprehensive and worried that I may get a crappy system but so far all is excellent. At first I found the keyboard to be a little tricky to get used to, possibly due to the actual size of the dammed things but after spending the day with it I'm very happy with it and it is excellent. The fist thing that really blew me away are the speakers, my good I'm finding them to be just wonderful, so loud and very satisfying. Bare in mind I'm coming from a Surface Pro 4 so that may be way, but still.

I have been gaming all afternoon and so far the temps are excellent I think. From what I can tell thy are not getting above 70, so I'm very much hoping I have got a decent system, time will tell I guess. Also the fans when on full are not actually as loud as I was expecting and I find the speakers more than drown it out. I had a M17x about 5 years ago and boy did that get loud. But when not gaming and just web browsing etc I am also pleased that is just whisper quiet.

I am so happy with my purchase and am not regretting plonking down a lot of money because it really does feel expensive and the quality is excellent.

Hello but I was wondering if there is a fix to this. The difference between core 0,2 and 3 are near 0-5% at all times but sometimes the difference better core 0 and 1 spikes to between 7-10% it stays for a few less than a secoind but I am wondering if I should reopen and if I do have to fix it what should I do. Thank you.

Some time I've been having a problem trying to run CS: GO, I'd like someone to help me.

The game has a very steep FPS drop when the mouse moves, even in the menu.

And also the processor clock won't go up of 2.8 Ghz.

    Bios 1.1.6

I'm currently running the game on a 130W power supply, could that be the cause of the problem?

in their eyes the ram sticks are identical

the hardware supplier doesn't matter, same as you have tripod or hsb that manufacture the mb, or cci and sunon to manufacture the heatsink

Dell as a large ODM, buy all their hardware in bulk where they get the best deal aka offer from their subcontractors. Lowest prices precedes-smashes everything else!! If they are out of a particular hardware, they will put in what they have available. See @Mobius 1 comment. Does not matter what is being used. Only the specification is correct and as long the specifications do not differ too much. This will not happen if you buy from a reputed re-seller. You yourself decide what you want within what they can offer. If they can't offfer what you want, You can skip the hardware and buy it afterwards other places. You will not be forced to pay for something you do not want!! Especially not unwanted-low end hardware that others love to force on you. With Dell you have to take whatever they offer(minimum spec).

    upload_2017-6-18_14-14-49.png

Dell isn't worried for losses or what hardware they will use in their builds They are worried for the component costs... What brand they will use doesn't matter as long as the specifications do not differ too much!!

don't think any reseller would go out of their way to replace your xg4, skhynix, or any other brand of nvme ssd to the samsung

don't get ultra-gouged by the reseller, buying from dell is always cheaper and you should always threaten a return if they don't replace your ssd with a samsung one

That's the beauty of ordering from a boutique. Most boutiques will let you custom order a dell also with the ram and ssd you choose....

Anyone's R4 have a bad sounding mic? all my friends say it sounds worst than my inspiron. I have all the bells and whistles enabled to make it sound better but it still does not sound good.

buying without ssd from hidevolution still is more expensive than buying with a base ssd from dell

the listed price on the dell website is not set in stone, you can make a landslide and have it for much less

But you sure as hell pay for it.
There's always another level with stores like hid. Either you're paying more to get that sick panel revision everybody's talking about, or the silicon lottery chips... next week will be the keyboard with the brighter LEDs, the first revision hinges, etc... They're just banking on your enthusiast wallet
