When you save it in ACC it should save to a particular profile, but won't apply that profile unless you select it on the main page where it says "current".. (or similar, don't have it in front of me).

I created a new profile "MyOC"... saved the undervolt to that... then selected it as the active overclock profile.

Wow that's awesome news, lets hope it happens soon. 2060 full desktop is close to 1070ti/1080 GTX performance and I think better suited for 1080p gaming. I would predict thermals will be a lot better.

Mine is on its way back to HIDevolution (Alienware also asked to have it back, but neither could have a replacement available anytime soon, and only HID can issue a refund). As much as I liked it before it self-immolated (and I liked it a lot), I’m not inclined to wait on another one to come in stock, nor to have them repair that one and send it back to me.

This laptop was always right on the edge for me — I’m more of a thin and light guy at heart, but it won me over with solid quality and superb performance. Given the trade-offs between performance and size, both the A51m and the GX701 are super interesting to me this cycle, for different reasons; honestly I’d probably be happy with either, because they’re both good at one of those and GREAT at the other, and both have a few head-scratching decisions that muddy the waters (although the Asus takes the cake for sheer eccentricity in the weirdness factor rating).

In the end it came down to availability, since I have some trips coming up. So my GX701 is getting the full HID treatment and shipping out tomorrow. I’ll be keeping an eye on the A51 developments.

    Cheers!

    /beer

    All,

Here is a run with the 9700K at 5.1ghz and 2070 config, can’t wait for the TDP increase. Managed to break 22K graphics with the stock power.

It burned out. It might have been the video card. The post was a few pages back. It was a 9700K w/2080 and the full suite of HID options for improved thermal performance. Ran great with good temps then started losing graphics (black screen requiring reboot) before finally just switching off and never coming back.

you didnt open it to have a look at where it was burnt? i was wondering if HID missed the VRM heatsink underneath the DGFF card, or if it wasn't repaded properly by HID or dell factory, or if it was a component issue.

Fine so far; RMA process was fast. I needed to place another order with my CC if I wanted cross-shipping of a replacement, but that was expected.

For something like this, as much as I’d like to know myself (and I will be following up with them to find out), since it’s a warranty issue, I prefer to let them diagnose it as cleanly as possible. Leaving it exactly as they shipped it is the best way I can help them do that.

I'm in the exact same position.

Also toying with the idea of just getting a 9900k upgrade for my old desktop, currently a 5820k and maybe an m17 or m15.

As promised, I ran the benchmark first in 1080p, then realized I had the thermals set to quiet mode for this benchmark:

After I realized that, I reran it in performance mode:

I absolutely hate when support tells me to contact someone else in their damn company by phone; what are YOU there for then? You contact whoever you want and solve the problem instead of me having to contact countless reps from different departments because you are incompetant.

Just had to put that out there as I am still pissed at another corp for this exact thing just a few days ago.

Or at least try to contact them and complain about the endless delays and tell them if they don't offer a discount for the huge delay you will cancel the order and buy a competitor product you can have right now not in a months time; and see what they say.

They were overcharging even when it had the 2080 card. Just look at the CPU upgrade price as one example, in US you need to pay $350 to go from i7-9700k to i9-9900k while the Intel MSRP has $115 price difference between these two CPUs; and that is still not taking into account the probable volume discount Dell is getting from Intel on the CPUs compared to Intels retail pricing.

Same is true for RAM, and SSD, pricing; on the GPU I would give them a pass as its a custom designed part which is not cheap to do, but prices on off the shelf components Alienware just plugs in are extremely exagerated on the Area-51m.

If they want higher pricing they should increase the base price of the system instead of extremely overcharging for plug and play upgrade parts.

Reducing the display by so little and compromising on not having QHD and UHD at launch was the stupidest thing Alienware could have ever done. Its just on a whole other level of stupid.

And from what Frank has said on twitter we are only getting UHD in 8 months, QHD is not coming at all, based on his latest tweets. :(

Curious, what GPU are you running in your desktop that you would upgrade to the 9900k? Also a m15/m17? Were you planning on a complete desktop replacement with the 51m now thinking of keeping the desktop and just having a laptop

Do you "notice" any difference between gaming or other uses (other than running the numbers apps) between the 9700k and the 9900k?

Do you enjoy additional joy from higher performance between the too?

Between that, or lack of that, plus the additional heat and fan noise - is it worth it to get the 9900k vs the 9700k?

Hey it's great to see you around @hmscott ... My config is with the 9900K, but I have my 8086K standing by as I'll be testing both extensively.

IMO as I've mentioned earlier on before the launch of the Area 51M, I think the 8700K/8086K is perfect for this laptop. Unless one "properly" and "successfully," delid's the 9900K, it's going to be an amber coal as it has shown to be. I'm definitely not against the 9900K, in fact I love it (see my sig for what I've been up to lately :), however, if it's already a challenge to cool it in a desktop environment, then it should be expected that in a laptop it'll be even a bigger challenge.

I have a fully delided 9900K as well standing by so between that and the work I put into it, we'll see how this thing hums at the end of the day with real word tasks, gaming etc... the same tests will be duplicated with the 8086K with it clocking at 5.4GHz on all 6 Cores. The same 8086K (delidded btw) that's going in is the one in my sig.

Looking forward to it all and joining the party.... I'm late, but hey... better late then never right? :)

    See you all very soon....

Well, the XPS 15 with UHD touch screen is a marvel to look at and to use, leaves the Apple boys in awe. But the Alienware 17 and now the A51m seems like, I don't know, littered with monumental mistakes. I have had three AW17R5 replacements and I have been repasting once a month. It is a £3,000 laptop after all. One might even think that there is another team designing the XPS and another the Alienwares.

I have a RTX 2080 Ti and an Alienware Graphics Amplifier.
Reason to still get an Alienware laptop, such as the m15 or m17, is because if I wanted, I could use the RTX 2080 Ti in the AGA still.
I was just going to scrap the desktop entirely, and just use the 51m with the AGA and RTX 2080 Ti.
Probably a bit overkill to have a 51m with an RTX 2080, and 2080 Ti in the AGA, but the 2080 Ti is still like 30% faster than a 2080, even in the AGA.
My main monitor is the Alienware 3440x1440 ultrawide 100hz screen, so every little bit helps.

I think UHD in such an small form factor (17 inches) is nonsense, plus the problems Windows 10 has with scaling. I wish there was a QHD option, I think that's the sweet spot.
Could you please link to the tweets where he states that there will be no QHD screens after all?
    Thanks

I always thought that in general, the 9900K is better binned than the 9700K and given the case, you could disable hyper threading in bios options and "convert" a 9900k into a 9700k but better binned. That's the reason I went for the 9900K.

Completely agree, unless they go with a 4k 120hz, but thats extremely unlikely, and you would need at least the 2080ti for that.

At this point it just keeps getting worse and worse with the Area-51m, and it kind of sucks spending $3K+ on a system and you can't even have the display you want, which is one of the most important components of a laptop that you look at all the time, and having to shill out extra $600 for a proper display kind of defeats the purpose of wanting to buy a portable compact all in one system.

I'm in Canada and my unit also just shipped (on Friday), the estimated delivery was on the 8th (april). Ordered on the 1st though so the laptop was most likely already getting built before any potential part shortage.

So only UHD ? Not sure how pertinent those are on a 17" screen but I guess it makes sense marketing wise.

I agree fully, however, it's horses for courses, and everyone have their own preferences. I cannot judge just as I do not want to be judged for my preferences.

Dell only know how many AW17 FHD, UHDs and QHDs they have sold, and it is their marketing decision. Just as is the "lunar white", the two PSUs and any other design aspects.

Sorry, should have clarified. I don't think the promo is live, but as of a couple weeks ago Umar and Azor said it was being worked on. This last tweet is the first we've heard since. So it seems at some point the promo will go live, but it definitely won't be retroactive.

Agreed that 9700k will run cooler than 9900k, I wouldn't call it a safe bet! @MichaelF1 had a 9700k with 2080 and it had the same "burning" issue and he has returned it. He even confirmed that the temps were not high while using it - around 78C and he didn't expect it to blow up.

I wish that dell fix the issue soon. I am still inclined towards 51m just for that keyboard! I wish other vendors could provide a good keyboard in a gaming laptop.

Rather that they went for the weird shape on the panel. The extra cost for adding QHD options force people over on 1080p because 4K is awful for us without “high quality” eyes. Oh’well the price you have to pay going out of specs.

Not sure how much you like to have your laptop swimming around in your backpack, but here's how mine fits in the Vindicator v2.0

Looks like enough room to me. Slides in and out real smooth and does have side padding for protection.

Wow, Dell has pretty much the worse customer support I have seen. No one has any answers, the reps they assigned me to email them are always "out of office" and tell me to email their supervisor who surprisingly are "out of office" as well. My date has come and gone and zero updates... I'm about to cancel this, the investment might not be in my best interest with future dealings.
