Anyone else not impressed with the speakers on this thing?
I just find them very underwhelming. -

I am very impressed , they are loud and with some good bass. I see some love them and some say they are bad. I’m wondering if it’s a different setting or are they using two different manufacturers for the speakers

How about if you try to create a custom resolution with the 240 Hz refresh rate? -
Has anybody here seen 120/ 144 hz and 240hz side by side? The latter sounds a little extreme...

Yes, 240hz is amazing. You can see the difference between 144 and 240 If you are playing fast first person shooters

Would you mind sharing your settings? I have even used the AWCC to adjust the speaker settings and I still find them sounding muffled, crackling and low bass. Even with bass dial turned up. -
HDMI will not do 240 HZ, switch cables and try again. 144hz is max, if you have the right cable and HDMI 2.0 on both source and Monitor. Try DP cable

Hi everyone, trying to figure out the lowest cost way to owning a 51m on my budget. I noticed that people mentioned Dells starting price was $1,950 earlier on, but now it's risen by $200 to $2,150. Does anyone know of a Dell coupon I can apply at checkout or a cheaper retailer? I've seen Xoticpc's cheaper 2070 and 2080 builds but since I'm on a budget was looking at 2060 + 9700k.

I did 240hz at 1080p fine with hdmi , the only thing that won’t work is gsync, for that you need dp

tried these settings and they were temps after 10minutes on ac
rigins tried bfV and shut down blue screen because of unexpected error and now everytime on them settings shuts off before a game starts even with acc overclocks still hitting 100degs maybe more but acc only registers 100

Many HDMI are unable to run at anything above 60HZ
Use the display port. Much better for monitors and should support 240HZ no problem. -
Being new to all this overclocking malarky I'm wondering which thermal paste to repaste my CPU and GPU with. I like the look of Thermal Grizzly conductonaut 73W/M, except it says in tiny print "May be corrosive to metals" !!!
Is it good/bad to use? -
I might be wrong but i think HDMI is not able to run 240hz. As far as i know only HDMI 2.0 supports 1080p with 240hz.
. Have you tried DP?
Edit: RTX cards have HDMI 2.0b so it should work
Edit2: The Display only supports HDMI 1.4

if you’re using the HDMI cable provided with the monitor it should do 240hz no sweat. I have no issues using mine at that hz.

BFV uses AVX so it will use more voltage. If you have the option available you can change the AVX offset, if not just reduce the clock speed.

Difficult one mate as its expensive regardless of configuration. If it were me, I'd go with the base CPU which is the 8700, the reason being is that it's still good for the current range of games. Plus, it might be far easier to upgrade the CPU than it will be to upgrade the GPU in future. If there is a decent enough saving maybe go with the 2070 instead?
I'd go with base everything else such as the RAM and the storage options as you can buy the equivalent from 3rd parties cheaper. Check Amazon or other big tech retailers and compare 16GB RAM from them against the Dell upgrade, likewise with storage options. -
Conductonaut is liquid metal, indeed it's much better at dissipating heat, but if you are new to this I wouldn't recommend you mess with liquid metal unless you can ask someone with experience to do it for you. It conducts electricity, so you could fry you laptop if you don't do it properly. In your case I would stick to Kryonaut or Noctua NT-H2 (or Carbonaout when it's released)c69k likes this.

I highly recommend NOT getting the model equipped with the 8700/RTX 2060 . If you read the fine print, the side vents on that version do not work. I got lucky when I ordered and upgraded to the i7 9700 which does include the upgraded cooling. I am VERY pleased with it. It runs very cool and blows away any other 2060 and even some 2070 laptops I've seen as far as ingame performance goes.c69k, Fire Tiger and LoganWade like this.

Honestly, the best thing to do would be to order an 8700 with a 2070, everything else base settings. 8gb ram, 1tb sshd, then the best display you can afford. The 8700 is plenty powerful enough for any game, it's what I have in my area-51m and it hasn't caused any bottlenecks for me in gaming yet. And it can always be upgraded later if needed or wanted.
Ram is much cheaper from third party vendors, just look on amazon. 8gb will be fine until you can upgrade later. Same thing with the hard drive, you can get an nvme ssd from amazon for less than the upgrade charge whild building your 51m. As for the monitor, I'm partial to the higher framerate displays, I have the 144hz non-gsync. I have an external g-sync monitor. IMO, If you're going to be getting a new RTX gpu, you might as well get a display that can support the framerates it pumps out. This is also something that much more difficult to upgrade later.
Finally, the 2070 over the 2060. upgrading the gpu at a later date is going to be the most expensive upgrade you can do whenever it's available. Save yourself some money now and get at least a 2070. Now, if you're absolutely certain a 2060 will keep you satisfied until the next gpu is available, by all means, go for it. However, from my experience with the 2070 version of the 51m, it can just barely pull 90hz in VR at the highest settings, which is what I wanted it for. When (If) they finally release the new bios increasing the TDP for the 2070, it'll be even better though.
Anyway, that's my opinion. I purchased an Area-51m with an 8700, 2070, 8gb ram, 1tb sshd, 144hz non-gsync from dell then added 32gb ram, 1tb nvme, and 500gb nvme myself. I used a 15% coupon available at the time (no longer valid) and saved a lot of money. If you want to save more, look into ebates, they were offering 10% cash back at some point, I don't know if they still are or not.
EDIT: If you do decide to go with a 2060, then definitely get the 9700 since it will also upgrade your cooling so you won't need a new heatsink/fan assembly if you ever decide to upgrade the cpu or gpu later.Last edited: Apr 15, 2019SlickDragon and c69k like this. -
That's what I have as well, but I spent the extra money to get the 144hz /w g-sync monitor. It's one of the few things you can't upgrade. Do not be tempted to go with the i7 8700. The cooling is downgraded for some reason on that model .
Anyways... I'm very happy with it. It gets really great performance and stays very cool. Get a good pair of headsets, though. It does get loud.c69k likes this. -
That statement is false, the cooling is only downgraded on a 2060 with an 8700. I have the 2070 with 8700 and have the same cooling as the 2080s with a 9700 or 9900.SlickDragon and c69k like this.

Sorry... I had just stated as much in my other reply one post before, so was just summarizing. Yes... the i7 8700/RTX 2060 is the only one with downgraded cooling. Seems like a dumb idea on Dell's part.SlickDragon, c69k and LoganWade like this.

I can’t believe we are STILL locked down on ram speeds. They enable high wattage vbios files that burn GPUs but they are being so slow and cautious about going above 2400mhz ddr4. I think the m17 and m15 even have ddr4 2666 but not the flagship. Lordy.....

What more pathetic (IMO) is that a lenovo Y740 supports up to 3200Mhz, and AW only 2400..

That’s insane. I wonder what could be holding dell up to get this unlocked. Makes 0 sense to me. I know it doesn’t matter in gaming but for us who are benching for max scores it matters a lot

A new Revision. Just like with the Displays. It's a common way to get people to upgrade. Look at how Apple does it.c69k likes this.

One thing I noticed on my system from HID is the top bezel is scratched, see picture below. Think it’s worth returning? It does not wipe off.

Check out my previous posts. This is due the plastic quality used (same also for the new m15/17 models). Expect some scratches. Just be very careful with the cleaning.Ashtrix, propeldragon, jclausius and 2 others like this.

Yes but should I return it since it came from them this way? I never wipe anything due to fear of micro scratches

Send them an email. HIDevolution is very helpful. But you should have mailed them once you saw it (under the unboxing). Use it and then come up with it afterwards ain’t so smart/wise.
-

Seriously? For that?
Ignore it or paint it
You should tape off the system, prime it, then paint it Matte. I will be doing this in the Summer (pollen count too high in spring). The bezel will be easy to paint. The speaker grills will be hard though. May skip those. We will seeSlickDragon, Ashtrix, steberg and 4 others like this. -
What material or cloth would you recommend for cleaning the bezel? I'm aware micro fiber is no good, but are there any materials that don't make scratches on this glossy and delicate plastic?
-
As I said in previous post in this thread... “I use what come with different cleaning kits. Not brand loyal. But not the cheapes and not the most expensive”. Just be careful when you clean it.
