That could be the issue. Dell recommends only using their proprietary drivers. This isn't new, I don't know if you remember but at the time Windows 10 was released, Alienware 18s and 17s were dying left and right because of nVIDIA Drivers, seems like they don't comply with what Dell sets for power. I could be wrong but I usually prefer to stick to manufacturer drivers when it comes to GeForce drivers -

This version of experience came installed from dell, so it shouldn’t be an issue to get updates from it

The AW problem wasn't due this. It was a EVGA Precision software that bricked some screens. We who had AW17 with 120Hz screens was saved from this mess. Also some Clevo got bricked screens.Ashtrix, raz8020, Darkhan and 1 other person like this.

Doesn't matter where GeForce Experience came from, it will always download the latest drivers from nVIDIA straight so that's no different then one installing the latest nVIDIA Standalone driver. Point is, you should not allow it to update and there is an option in GeForce Experience to ignore driver updates. -
HaloGod2012 Notebook Virtuoso
Dell should definitely not allow it then lol

Rather be careful what you download from Win Update. Dell push harder and harder with good help from Redmond HQ...

That is true, but more importantly, the muppets at nVIDIA need to get their act together, you case is not a first, they have fried numerous laptops with their driver updates because they use as as guinea pigs. -
Could it be it's going into some kind of power saving mode and cuts off lanes? I know my desktop card (2080Ti) does such a thing. It fluctuates constantly betwen 8.0, 5.0 and 2.5:

Something even more amazing. When it went out the first time, it took out my two nvme drives. I plugged them into both desktops of mine and none will even register. What the hell did this thing do to my stuff. My nvme drives won’t be covered under the return since I added them myself

I mean it was one before with exatly/similar problem posted in this thread. @QUICKSORT ?

Alright, ill hold off on it for now. Hope you get your machine sorted out. I REALLY hope dellienware fixes this issue for good. This should not be happening, seems to be more and more every day.S.K, VoodooChild and Papusan like this. -

The only thing I would accept from HID is a completely brand new system or a refund, I won’t play the gut open and try new parts game

Yeah I feel it. I still dont think they've fixed this issue, but best of luck with your new machine. -
Maybe return it and grab something else? I'd rather have a bit weaker notebook than a potential fire hazard and days of frustration.
This sounds like a power delivery issue to me, maybe the chip that splits the power from both chargers is going nuts.
This does not sound like a temp problem at all if it blew both SSD's. Modern VRM IC's should work fine up to ~120*C and have a thermal cutoff, same for the GPU and CPU.
Must've been a big power spike that blew the hell out of motherboard components.

According to HID this issue was resolved and I just missed being part of the revised batch. They are going to set me up for an exchange of a new machine with the fixes from dell

And when can we get the proper info from Dell? What is fixed? Or better say what was wrong with this model in first place.SlickDragon, Ashtrix, raz8020 and 5 others like this. -

Wouldn’t tell me what was wrong but that they did fix it through hardware, everyone might be silent on this one. He did assure me though that the next unit I get will be with the fixes

I’m on my phone. But we have a clearly answer from Azor in this thread. *No hardware problems*. His last words on this. This From his tweets. What with all those thousands with first batch? Screwed aka just waiting on the burning smell/smoke? The 30 days useful return period is probably gone for many out there.Last edited: Apr 23, 2019

I called back and told HID to just set it up as a refund, I can’t chance having another issue and doing this all over again. It’s by far my favorite laptop out there but I just can’t take the chance. This sucks!!

Just quick numbers, I did not go back and count.. but would you guys agree there are about 40 owners on this forum and we're at about 20 that have gone up in smoke?
50% failure rate? -
Just bought mine a few days ago, 9900k/2080, bought the 3 year warranty.
So as far as Ram goes, just got the base 8gigs, what would be a good brand to put in this thing? Could I do 3200 mhz or should I stick with 2666? -

Seems most like Corsair Vengeance 2666 or the Hyper X 2666. No point in going above 2666, i dont think it will ever support higher than that. -

Damn. Now that's unexpected isn't it? You were one of the most enthusiastic members in this lounge and was always posting positive stuffs. I hope it gets resolved on time bro. It was a 2080 / 9700 combo wasn't it? I've the exact same specs coming up in 3 weeks time.
Well, I guess it's time to get a 4 year warranty and set the popcorn in the microwave. The Hateboys are out with the pitchforks now.

The real question is what are you gonna get next? They just released some new i9 laptops. This one's worth a look as its cooling system is superb even stock, let alone if you get the thermal upgrades from HIDevolution: Custom Built MSI GT75 9SG TITAN 4K-247- 17.3" QFHD 100% RGB - i9-9980HK - RTX 2080

I feel you bro. My unit is also coming from HID in a few weeks time and knowing my luck, I'm sure it's going to crash and burn. I feel it.
I will try this once, fingers crossed, and if the issue remains persistent and Dell/AW remains silent on the matter, I'll move on to Razer Blade 17 Pro. It looks good and I've always wanted to try a Razer laptop. I mean, it might throttle and down clock itself, but at least it won't freaking blow up into smokes man. Let's see.
Keep us updated mate. Good luck

So I'm looking at ordering thermal pads at the moment for both of my 51ms.
I was originally going to get Fuji Extreme 11w/mk, but they're much more expensive than Gelid and smaller pads. (~$45 for one machine.)
The Gelid pads seem to be much cheaper and much larger, and also have 12w/mk. They come in 120mmx120mm. So I figured I would buy one 1mm, and one 0.5mm 120x120 pads. (~$40 total, for what I think would be enough for both machines.)
Will this be more than enough to repad both machines?
Also, does anyone have experience with Gelid extreme pads? Are they stiff? Squishy? Do they last long? Thanks!mattcube64 likes this. -
Hi all, haven't checked in to the thread in a few days... been pretty busy.
Something I'm confused on that I just noticed today... the thermal profiles in ACC... do they actually adjust CPU/GPU speed as well as fan levels?
I was running anthem today on balanced (I usually use performance) and noticed it came in actually a couple degrees cooler for CPU than when I run performance (with the louder fans).
I know there is a "star system" the tooltip gives you... and it says thermal comfort is lower with performance than balanced.
Kind of strange... doesn't seem to be a way to manipulate the fans only (or is that the manual fan curve?). -
I’m hoping it’s just the batch issue. Have the warranty in case
This would be a great time for Asus finally release its Mothership.... could reshift a lot of attention their way with new venting they’re doing on it
https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-Mothership-GZ700/
Gonna be hard not to be jealous just a little when that bad boy releases (if it’s parts are still relevant with how long they’re taking...) -
Open the laptop and make photos!
-
Yes you're correct. RTX mobile GPUs get the same driver dell published and even MSFT update pushes the same version for RTX and 1660 GPUs.
-
Try wiping the affected drives and RAM sticks with alcohol prep pads and if you see black marks wipe it as well and see if it registers on your desktop then make screenies of detected SSD in BIOS screen along with time and then RMA the drives.
Tell them drives are detected in BIOS but not in OS after getting WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSOD.Fire Tiger likes this. -

Gelids are the best thermal pad. They're squishy and will form well under heat. -
Not thermals burned the laptops...i think the big voltage from cpu, most of them burned on idle not games. No thermals are the issue.
Last edited: Apr 24, 2019Vasudev likes this. -
and in your opinion the CPU voltage is the reason those RTX GPUs died? I dont think so.
-
SacraficeMyGoat Notebook Evangelist
Thanks. Do you happen to know if a 120mmx120mm pad of 1mm and .5mm will be enough to repad 2 machines? -
So I got a replacement GPU from Dell but it didn't fix the PCIe link degradation from x8 to x4 problem. Unfortunately the motherboard that came had bent pins in the cpu socket so it'll be replaced tomorrow. What's confirmed: this is not an issue specific to DGFF card itself. Most likely the motherboard.
raz8020 likes this. -
What about the connector itself, did you request a new connector?
-
It looks OK so I don't think that's the problem. If new mobo doesn't fix it then I'll definitely ask for that.Vasudev likes this.

Could you take a picture of the bent pin on the MB?
When I changed the thermal paste on mine, I looked at the pins and one looked kind of bent but it's hard to tell since they dont stick up straight, they're angled. Everything seems to be working fine though so if it is bent, I don't think its causing any issues.
