Yes these are on my clevo as we speak - same pads.
Very...VERY crumbly - so do not use if you intend on taking the system apart for maintenance often (e.g. repastes - checking LM etc).VoodooChild and c69k like this. -
Could be a bad DGFF connector as well. These new connectors have insanely tiny pins and are failing in quite a large number afaik. Perhaps Dell will have to come up with a reinforced version of this connector with stiffer and stronger pins. That bugger is what gave me the PCIe link degradation error and several other weird errors to many other users. And there is always a possibility of being unlucky in modern complex hardware leaving the factory. QC is perhaps one of the laziest departments globally speaking these days and all that they do is paste stickers of "QC Passed" on the boxes. Guess how I know. lol
Here is a glimpse of the "upgrade" job that I received my laptop with.

The same here. Very expensive and very crumbly and incompessible. After a lot of reading, I luckily tried Gelids 12 Wm/k, happy since.

Is Liquid Ultra still one of the better thermal pastes out there? I have some from 3 years ago that I put on my Alienware 18 and want to do the same on my 51m. Do you think it is still good in the vial?

good for you. I will only update my drivers manually, I'm faster and more vigilante than any app.

after unistalling intel dynamic platform & thermal framework i had to increase the voltage on the core from -185mV to -170mV, on the cache from -134mV to -130mV
-
And how are your temps before and after?
-
Korben_Dallas Notebook Consultant
from 3 to 5 degrees more on cinebench r15 and r20
-
i think your setting before wasnt stable
15mv and 5 degree more? sounds impossible
-

for a couple days it seemed stable', i have the impression that the power requirements and temperature have increased mainly due to removal of IDPTF -
That is exactly what just happened to mine. I was playing a game when it simply cut off as if all power was lost to it. From then on, no matter what I did, there was no more sign of life out of it. I'm going to be sending it back to Dell of course, but at this point, I would just like a damn replacement. When it was first sent the damn GPU died. Got a new one from Dell and installed it. About 5 days later this happened.... so yeah, I'm a little paranoid of that particular laptop now. I'd just like a new one.
Semi-Ironically,like you, I am also military and spent about $4300 on a laptop that has now failed me twice in less than a month. I'm also in Afghanistan at the moment, so as you can imagine it will probably be about a 1 1/2 months before I can even get this thing sent stateside, repaired, and then 3 weeks to get it back.Predator2181 and propeldragon like this. -

anyway i just double checked, the temperature increase seems to be in the order of 2 degrees more

Can you adjust the keyboard lightning? I had this problem to and the only way to fix it is to reinstall it.

Guess I’ll have to try it!

So, after my first GPU died, I was able to get a replacement sent rather quickly through DellCares on twitter. However, now that it has been past 30 days (even though I have only had physical possession over here for about 3 weeks) they can only have me send it in for repair as 3 or more major components have to die for it to be replaced. Do you guys think Frank on twitter would be able to do anything to help me get it replaced? Not trying to pull the 'help a deployed soldier' routine, but mail here is only flown out once a month, and it is a 3 week travel time between here and the states.. so any return and receive will take a minimum of 2 months. I know it is on me, but do you guys think he would have any say or ability to help with an exception?

Message Frank on Twitter. I'm sure he'll help you out. And ask for replacement because replacing parts on a brand new laptop would absolutely break my heart considering it's a $4kplus system. Good luck mate.

Anyone know here how to properly enable HDR on games?
So I can enable it on the monitor. But if there is any HDR content, the monitor automatically switches to HDR (double checked and confirmed) (by the way monitor is Aorus AD27QD)
But the HDR in games look washed out, as if it is SDR content being renderd while HDR is enabled. I also tried manually enabling/disabling HDR on the monitor and through windows display settings and in the game itself, but no difference.
I tested this with Sekiro and with Anthem.
Also the HDR works perfect on e.g. Youtube videos, I enable HDR on windows display settings, and on youtube HDR options pop up, and when I choose them I see more vibrant and brighter images. While everything that is SDR looks dull while enabled. WHich is exactly how games look.
So anyone knows how to properly enable it in games?Fire Tiger likes this. -

Quick update:
This should be the week I get the new system replacement. They told me it will arrive by the end of this week. However, with no shipping notification yet, and it’s now Wednesday, I don’t see how it will be possible to get it to me in the states that fast.

Can anyone tell me if there's a problem play games with Max fan always turned on? I mean, if I can keep my temps low I see no reason to not use. Dust?

Thoughts on Corsair Vengeance 2666 CL18 vs Ballistix 2666 CL16? Both the same price, but I've heard ballistix doesn't support auto overclocking? Not that this is a huge issue for the 51m..

Nevermind solved it. sorry for posting something off topic

Maybe go with the sticks which offer lowest timings (Still none know if Dell only will offer locked down possibilities for 2666MHz ram if they find it possible for this machine). Aka ram sticks can only run native clocks and timings. Otherwise fully locked.Arrrrbol, Darkhan and SacraficeMyGoat like this.
-

That's what I was thinking, but if they do increase speed to 2666, but don't offer XMP profiles, I won't be able to run the Ballistix at 2666, it will be stuck at 2400. Where as the Corsair auto clocks to 2666 without the need for XMP profiles. -
Maybe wait a couple of months with the purchase. This if you can. Ram prices won't fly to the heaven as it is now.Ashtrix, raz8020, Arrrrbol and 1 other person like this.

Another area 51m burns out. 23 minutes ago
My Area 51m (9700k, rtx2080) arrived from HIDevolution on April 23rd. And about 10 minutes ago it winked off while running the ashes of the singularity escalation benchmark, and smoke came up out of the vents. I honestly don't understand how this can be happening.Last edited: May 1, 2019Ashtrix, raz8020, Vistar Shook and 7 others like this. -

this whole story is starting to annoy me, too many units are on fire, I spent almost € 4000 for this machine, it's not fair to have to live with the fear that blows up ...

I already ran furmark and prime95 on my unit for 1 hr. I'm currently leaving that as a no-fire hassle for now until I end up like @Predator2181 and have a dead unit with no indicator. I also don't want to repaste after getting some superb temps. Currently testing undervolting of both CPU and GPU and creating a battery saver mode with TS so I can increase the battery life just a bit further for when I'm idling and charging my car at a supercharger somewhere.

Maybe the failures are due to OCing. I don’t think it’s a good idea to overclock a laptop...don’t care what model you have. Keep it stock.

Created a gaming profile that doesn't go above 4.8GHz and strangled that GPU power curve and got much more manageable temps for long enduring gameplay. This is definitely okay to play on the knees. Had to uninstall Intel XTU due to weird issue with settings not sticking per boot. This is also on "Performance" fan settings which was my intended goal so it would be sorta quieter. Going to start working on a media profile with huge downclocks for battery life. It has been known that with almost everything off and on low, this beast can reach 6 hrs of battery. I want to reach 3.5 hrs.

Overall, I really like the aesthetics and feel of this machine though I do lose out on the customizations like the unlocked Clevo counterpart. The main selling point is the keyboard, screen, size, and weight balance (seriously, this thing feels extremely light in comparison to one-handing that P870DM-G).Last edited: May 1, 2019 -
