Agreed, frank has been great help for me as well. Much more helpful than HID. I regret not just going through dell for my purchase

Heh, heartbreaking is a good word for it. Especially after that replacement GPU seemed to have it running wonderfully. Well, thanks for the advice (you as well Predator2181); I've reached out to Frank via twitter. He messaged me so I've sent him the issue. Wish me luck that he can do something haha.Predator2181 likes this.

Fyi. One of many reasons you never should install bloat!
Dell laptops and computers vulnerable to remote hijacks. Another security flaw in a vendor's bloatware apps puts users at risk.
Dell has released a patch for this security flaw on April 23.

Even if that was part of the issue, it would be pretty absurd given how Dell explicitly markets the machine to the hardest of the hardcore, don't you think?
Let's not even get into how "it's dangerous to overclock" is the dinosaur fossil of opinions on gaming laptops.Last edited: May 2, 2019 -
Well most of the machines are probably undervolted and running lower temps / power draw than an out of the box one.

I wouldn't bank on the Corsair running at 2666mhz, max ram speed is still determined by bios.
I would go with the lowest timings, Kingston hyperX kits are CL14 at 2400mhz and CL15 at 2666mhz.c69k likes this. -
Oh my days... *face palm* Are you serious?! That is completely unacceptable of a repaste/repad job. The first pic threw me out of my seat, but seeing that double stacking of pads about flipped me over the top. What in the world...seriously... wooow...
Absolutely not true. Both of my units are heavily OC'ed at all times and they are fine. The culprit with what we're seeing is looking to be with the GPU vrm's, which are being replaced with newer revisions...
Any stock app is complete rubbish IMO ... surprisingly the stock AW systems don't come with much bloat at all except the stock virus dell apps...
Manual install of apps and removal of bloat is the best way...rid all the stock crap... it's crazy how much it actually bogs down the system.Arrrrbol, Rei Fukai, VoodooChild and 2 others like this. -

Does anyone have recommendations for a laptop lock for it?

Hmm, alright. I'll probably go with the Ballistix then since the Hyper X runs at 1.35V compared to the 1.2V that corsair and ballistix run at. -
There were issues with some Micron GDDR6 memory chips as well on 2080TIs where they'd run fine when underclocked but would give black screens on 7001 MHz. I haven't seen those chips on DGFF cards *yet*, but I'm not sure if some of those are out there and have failed.
-
Ah yes... there were issues on the 2080Ti FTW3 cards, which I have with micron chips.
However, the newer cards have Samsung now which is great... but yea the micron GDDR6 have really bad integrity ... I just wish higher end companies wouldn't use micron at all and stick with Samsung...propeldragon, c69k, Rei Fukai and 1 other person like this. -
Yeah, I have Samsung chips, the card seems running great

I am referring to this kit below that runs at 1.2v, and can scale from 2666mhz at CL15 to 2400mhz at CL14 using the Jedec standard rather than XMP, so if our bios allows it might even run at 2666mhz as it doesn't require XMP:

Thanks for the link.
I could have sworn I looked at the 32GB kit somewhere (I think Amazon) and it showed 1.35v..
That's nice though! Seems to be worth the $35 extra over the other 32GB Kits that are CL18.c69k likes this. -

someone put instructions on here on how to permanently remove Intel Thermal Framework (DPTF) I can't find the post for the life of me . . . ?

Acid, the method that you found (might be laptop specific) made DPTF reinstall on every re-start. I tried 3 times. The method I sent you worked directly (on my 13 R3) and permanently and is easily reversible.XxAcidSnowxX likes this.

Update on my order: it took Xotic PC over 2 weeks to refund my amount and it reflected in my account this morning. I've cleared the payment to Hidevolution now and here's to hoping that my system won't die at idle while watching Game of Thrones.

I've just placed my order the other day from Dell for the Area 51m in UK. What I didn't check, was the keyboard layout. Just looked today and annoyingly it has the us layout. When going back, it doesn't even have the option to select UK keyboard, yet on another configuration, I could. Has any other UK owner had the US layout? If so, how easy is it to ignore and get on with?

My 51M died and I was going to return it for a refund. It’s been 2 weeks and no response for my return label or RMA authorization from HID. I called back and they said I was better off going through dell since they will get me a replacement faster than they could. The return authorization process never even happened; It’s like they forgot about it. Was not impressed. I definitely thank my lucky stars Frank contacted me and took care of it. He even gave me big upgrades to the CPU, RAM, and SSDs as a nice gesture.

Only the 'Dark Side of The Moon' comes with a UK keyboard. The Lunar White always has US layout regardless of where (in the world) you buy it, unless you get it customised by HIDEvolution etc. -

I’m confused. So disabling thermal framework will improve performance, but also increase temps/voltage needs?

I bought mine from HID. Donald served me. I can say my experience was good. The only thing they did was forgot to ship my backpack.
-
That's who I spoke to at length when I was considering my order. He seemed very forthcoming and advised that if I did have any issues I should go thru HID for assistance. Anyone else have experiences with HID good or bad that care to chime in?

You have fixed your ram problems? I can't see/remember you posted the fix. How well they will work in this particular machine <is when you is able to push them well above stock clocks>. For now... Locked down by Dell.

How Dell's Dynamic Power Mode helps
"Each notebook has its own design and has to be individually optimized for maximum performance while remaining within the skin temperature limits. Instead of just setting functions based on worst-case thermal limits, power limits to electronic components can be dynamically adjusted based on temperature feedback from thermal sensors placed at specific locations in the system. Correlation between skin temperature readings, power draw, operating frequency, device temperature, and other factors are established that enable the Dell Dynamic Power Mode to predict the surface temperature. This results in a matrix of power limits and thermal rules that are applied in real-time to adjust power limits to various components. This is implemented via a combination of Embedded Controller (EC) connected to each component and OS-based controls. The Intel Dynamic Platform Thermal Framework (DPTF-Aka Cancer software) provides a software framework for Dell's power policies."Last edited: May 2, 2019Darkhan, raz8020, pathfindercod and 1 other person like this. -
I have 13 R3 with locked 7700HQ, so not really. I can not get clocks for all 4 cores higher than 3400 Mhz officially (occasionally I get to 3600 Mhz on few cores in games with low CPU or # of cores usage).
With 7700HQ after I uninstalled DPTF, I experienced more heat, higher fans, but the same clocks (also time holding such clocks). HWINFO64 showed me that my processor can go suddently up to 60W from 45W previously.(PL1 and PL2 I believe).
I tried in games, but never reached more than 22-25W in any game, just like with DPTF installed. I checked HWINFO64 max. value for CPU package power, and it never exceeded 42W. (AIDA64)
HWINFO64 should report max. value if it occurs even for a 1 ns. Nothing.
From what I understand, if you have low power processor, disabling DPTF can help with getting rid of TDP throttling.
I have a feeling, that if I stressed CPU and Intel Integrated GPU to use 45W, then it would cross to more than that without DPTF.
Never happens on my computer after -.138V undervolt in TS on all except system agent -.60V. Even in AIDA64 fpu + gpu(s) I reach 42W max. at full clocks and no throttling.Last edited: May 2, 2019VoodooChild and nkc like this. -
Appreciate recommendations on SSD question: I just placed an order for an Area 51m with 9900/2080/32GB; for the SSDs I went with 2TB RAID 0 “M.2 PCIe SSDs” + 1TB hybrid with the 8GB cache. This was $100 cheaper than the option that was just 2TB SSDs without the extra 1TB hybrid—but those 2TB SSDs were listed as “PCIe NVMe SSDs.” Have I made a bad choice to spend $100 less and get 3GB total vs. spending $100 more and only getting 2GB but having those be listed as NVMe drives?

I've been touch with Donald at Hidevolution for the past 6 weeks and I can confidently say that he has been the reason why I've ordered my system through them. 100% recommended.
Although, all these systems from Hidevolution burning out around these parts make me think that they're still shipping out old units considering they've had Area 51m in stock since March. I've asked Donald to send my one of the new batches so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm any case, few 2 year warranty upgrade was sweet and I'm not too worried.

Did I get a lemon? Earlier today I ran Div 2 benchmark and got 10449 score and I ran it just now and got 5132 score . Nothing has changed. Last night I ran Firestrike and got a 23k score. I ran it just now and got 12k score. Any thoughts?

Hi everybody.
I just bought the AREA 51M and I'm happy I found this forum.
Not having time to read the 1000 pages of this topic, I wanted to have your recommendations and precautions to take concerning this PC.
After seeing your posts overall, the major problem of this PC is the excessive temperature in intensive use (CPU: 48-50°C idle and 100°C intensive, with the default settings). So, I'm afraid of premature deterioration of the PC, and at that price ...
My question is simply to know what are the best settings to apply to have a high performance PC which does not heat a lot and without risk ?
My configuration is based on i9 9900K and RTX 2080 (Latest Bios 1.5.0 and VBIOS 200W).
I have 32GB of MICRON DDR4 2666 RAM (16ATF2G64HZ-2G6E1) according to the CPU-Z software.
The RTX 2080 is based on GDDR6 chips (Samsung) apparently according to the GPU-Z software.
Thank you for your reply.
