1) When you buy a Dell laptop from any reseller, the Dell warranty and on-site support if ordered still applies
2) even if you move to another country, a simple call to Dell in that country and telling them that you want to transfer your warranty can be done so you can have the laptop serviced at your local dell. Transferring the warranty is free of charge the last time I checked.

Wonder if the 144hz display can be modded to support 3d vision.
Noticed the 4k option is missing from the site. Whats up with that? -
It seems like my order was canceled. Due to Europe having wrong data.
So all the EU prices have been updated. which makes it roughly 300€ more expensive for me.
Now wondering if I should go for the i9 instead of i7.
It's a difference of 150€. A little too steep for the performance difference.
Does anyone know if the 9900K runs hotter than the 9700K?
In that case I will not go for the i9.
EDIT: Decided to go for i7 as it seems the i9 does run hotter with marginal performance difference in my use cases. Also thanks @rinneh
Will be reordering soon.Last edited: Feb 7, 2019Vasudev and Fire Tiger like this. -

Yeah this definitely looks to be the case, I had built a quote for the 9700K and 2070 when they first became available in the UK and saved it, it was £2256. This was with 8GB RAM and 250GB SSD. It also included the FHD Screen with GSYNC, Tobii tracking at 144Hz.
Now I've gone back in and the same config is almost £300 more expensive. It seems now the base screen which is FHD 60Hz without GSync or Tobii is standard. The power supply also shows 240+330w rather than previously stated 180+240w
Total order now (initial config) - £2,536.19Last edited: Feb 7, 2019mason2smart likes this. -

I would buy 9900K and 1080. Period. Cooling can be done good only by yourself all under 90C.

i7 9700K and RTX 2080.
The GPU option is something to decide on your own. The performance difference is obvious, you are getting a significant improvement in gaming, it's a gaming machine after all.
Now about the CPU. I thought about it. and unless you use tools that use > 8 Threads at the same time, at significant CPU usage, then it doesn't make any sense to take i9 9900k, apart from trying to show off to other people, telling them I have the best of the best.
Because you are getting no performance improvement or barely any performance improvement in everyday use/gaming at the cost of 150€ and higher temperatures.
Now I don't know about this for certain, but a video was posted online of a dev Area51 machine, that had the cooler for the rtx 2070 in it while it was equipped with an rtx 2080 and i9 9900K, and apparently it was thermally throttling while the TDP limit was increased for a limited time when the turbo boost kicks in for the first time. But when the TDP dropped, it was back okay.
So yeah, any reason I can avoid heat is good enough for me.c69k likes this. -
Epic if they have just canceled your order... You paid for that, its expensive too and they can do that with us(or maybe a small %) ? Just cancel it and u get your money back?... If they cancel my order too, i wont order another one. It is not my problem, if they have no correct prices on their website...

Why are most people ordering the Alienware Area-51M with a 9700K and not the 9900K?

I would go for the same build as well since that offers the best performance to price ratio while hoping to keep temps under contol.mason2smart, Woodking and c69k like this. -

I like challenge. Maybe I just got a big mouth as I never owned a desktop (also processor), only laptops. And the 13 inch. is easy to keep under 70C compared to 90C+ on arrival LOL
I see that you know what you want. I would go for 16 threads as I believe, compared to 8 threads I would want to have some reserve. See, my 7700HQ has 8 threads and I am already dreaming about at least 6 cores.
Aren't 9900K and 9700K the same TDP?Vistar Shook and propeldragon like this. -

The intel TDP ratings are kinda a scam imo since most of the processors don't confirm to it when boosting. -
I also used Quidco for another 6% which means once I get the cash back the total will be £1965mason2smart, Fire Tiger and c69k like this. -
I'd be looking at the i7 8700 (6 core 65W TDP)
8GB Ram
256GB SSD
2070 8GB
NO Eye tracking
17.3" FHD 60Hz screen
Lunar Light
£2149 delivered.
Cheapest one available on the UK site, and the spec chosen a massive upgrade from the 6 year-ish old XPS 17 I'm still using now
Although the i7 9700k is only around £100 more expensive (and does have those 2 extra threads) the TDP jumps up to 95W from the 65W of the i7 8700 and I'd be concerned of possible thermal throttling or extra fan noise. Ram and SSD upgrades simple enough and always start a new machine off with a clean install to get rid of all the unwanted junk. W10 Pro also ordered at the time as I've been told its cheaper that way than buying an upgrade.Last edited: Feb 12, 2019Vasudev and Fire Tiger like this. -

If heat is your #1 concern , you are far better off getting an unlocked K CPU. You can then down clock if desired. The 8700 is stuck at what it is given (and is probably a poorer binned chip)mason2smart, Vistar Shook, c69k and 1 other person like this. -

https://ark.intel.com/products/186605/Intel-Core-i9-9900K-Processor-16M-Cache-up-to-5-00-GHz-
If the power limits can't be unlocked in A51M, then both the 9900K and 9700K will have the same amount of power draw (same heat output) when pushed to the limit. The main difference is that the 9700K has a bit more OC room before it reaches the power limit.
If the laptop will be used mainly for gaming, then 9700k is sufficient.
Those that use the laptop for both gaming and other CPU intensive productivity tasks (that can efficiently use all the threads), should chose the 9900k, which can be turned into a 9700k (by disabling HT in BIOS) when used for tasks that don't benefit from HT.mason2smart, Vistar Shook, c69k and 1 other person like this. -
Okay i phoned customer service from Dell.AT/DE, and they said, that there was a price change and added some more options for the Display (60Hz -> 144 Hz-Gsync+Tobii +300€ ), but this wont effect my order. Price difference from my order: 227€ saving...

A locked CPU like the 8700 is a far worse choice than either K cpus offered. You cant tune hardly anything.
AW already released a bois update for overclocking, and power management in the bios.
You can put any paste you want on this too. Just put grey gunk back on before sending it in if there is a problem if you put some shiny LM on it. Dont give 2 cents for whatever Azor or his underlings say about paste nonsense. They have no control whatever in Dells RMA processing. Expect a north Korean regime change before Dell changes their RMA processes. Thay are far from an agile or lean companymason2smart, Vistar Shook, ninja2000 and 3 others like this. -
I won't do any overclocking, prefer a stable quiet machine that's got a bit more oomph than the one I'm using now, and being able to upgrade it will give it a bit more longuevity.
