without undervolt. I think you can go under 1.360V and that should give better temps + score...

We will see.

Ok this is kinda nice considering this is stock. Would've been better if they did a 1hr test to see how it really holds. Can't wait to see how 9900k truly performs out of the box. Seems like there will be some room to wiggle on this unit. This looks much better than my 17R5 with the 8950HK.Last edited: Feb 13, 2019

It's lga, they do not use more than 1.300 Mv they only spike. On stock clocks bga is so broken it needs the extra 0.100Mv while it can survive easily without. For a CPU test this does not look promising considering that this was probably around 110/120 watts and without the GPU being in use. At least no throttling out of the box.
When the GPU runs full power heat will bleed. Looking forward to a tuned system score's and temperatures.raz8020 likes this. -

Yes absolutely. In my opinion, Dell have enough resources to make a beefier PSU, in house or outsource. PSUs are very low tech and very easy to make compared to everything else on the laptop. Compared to the motherboards, the PSUs are elementary. I would not be surprised at all if they start shipping stronger PSUs soon. -

I think MSIs and Clevos are also so expensive that peeps do not hesitate buying the Dells. -
You underestimate hwo much resources it cost, Portable 500+ watt laptop PSU's are very hard to manufacture and the one that do exist are more looking like actual PC PSU's in a non metal box. You cannot defy physics. More power needs a bulkier power delivery and 2 laptops PSU's are in the end still more portable and more carry friendly.Rei Fukai likes this.

Not even factoring in all the neccesary varifiation process can be for elecktronic products that are going to sold in the EU. Even if you have alot of Resources, making a new products is always time-consuming. It's indeed not hard, it just takes alot of time (and money) that dell does not want to bet probably on a cpu. They're using consumer sentiment with the 51M except at that time AW was still AW and now it's just a DELL laptop that has been socketed (and fenced off becuase no MXM)

People in the US, ours should start shipping today or tomorrow to reach us by the 19th right?

I called to ask, turns out since I preordered, there was some sort of “configuration error” on their end. They had to cancel and rebuild my order... and my delivery date was pushed back from Feb. 20 to Feb. 27... the bastards.

I am currently looking at this build, its around 4.7k and would like some opinions, thanks! (this is my first gaming laptop) Any tips and opinions would be appreciated

If you're paying with credit card and the card has extended warranty coverage, then it's basically a free extra year. Some cards will even have 2 years for free

Depends on the card

Yes, that’s my thinking, I was thinking to get a clevo but then I check the prices and are head to head with the dell here in uk so st the end for a few pounds more I preferred to go with dell at the end
Indeed, I’m in the same boat too, I got the 9700k confg so waiting to see some test before mines arrive to decide to keep it o return it instead -
What everyone needs to also know is how fast of a RAM frequency this can handle. I purchased mine with 8 GB 2400 MHz, so I can replace it upon arrival with something faster (and larger).
Being Z390 chipset, it should support 2666MHz out of the box.
It sells with a meager 2400 MHz, so how fast can we go?
Memory Controller marks the limit, but there’s no official documentation of max RAM frequency in the manuals, nor do the chat specialists/tech support say anything other than “the max supported is 2400 MHz”, which I call BS (they just don’t know), because they also told me that the mobo supports RAM overclocking using XMP profiles, so they’re contradicting themselves.
Anyone with it, please snap some pictures of the BIOS menus with regards to anything RAM related (Voltage? Timings? Frequency?). It would be vastly appreciated by the community (and me!).
Even better: if you’re replacing your RAM, like I plan to do, how fast is it? And is it working at the intended RAM speed?
Thanks! -
The 9900k and 9700k will be limited to 119w in combined loads, so both will output about the same heat at the max power draw.Papusan and Vistar Shook like this.

Oof, that 100C CPU in BFV despite being limited to only 119W. GPU gets close to 90C as well. Hopefully the proper heatsink does better.

From what I understand it comes with 2666mhz memory. But it's only running at 2400 mhz out of the box. Hopefully a bios update lets it run at 2666mhz. Beyond that we'll have to see.jclausius likes this.

90C at 129 watts? And why is the VID 1.435v at only 4.7 ghz?
Here's a 9900k at 4.7 ghz in a desktop (AVX disabled) prime95 29.5 build 10.

My opinion: if they shipped it with 2666 MHz but clocked it at 2400 MHz with the ability to up it to 2666 MHz now or in the future, they would advertise this and say “even the RAM can be OC'd, omgawsh!”
Plus, it makes zero economic and business sense to ship something overspec'ed (more expensive RAM to the company, higher cost) that your end user cannot use (us), and have the entire system be more expensive (less people would buy, potentially). RAM options in the configuration are absurdly expensive as they are. So, side note: EVERYONE should get 8 GB and upgrade to whatever (better) RAM they please, for less money. That’s what I’m doing. I just need to know: how fast!?!?
Same goes for the disks. I got mine with only the 1TB SSHD (so, it’s the Seagate, no doubt about it), and purchased a newly released 1TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus. I’ll use Alien Respawn premium to do a full backup and restore from the SSHD to the 970 Evo Plus, and voila! Saved HUNDREDS of dollars, and I’ve got an insanely fast (and large) boot NVMe SSD, and an SSHD for long term, bulk storage (for games not benefitted by an SSD, pics, music, docs, etc.).
Configure your rig with the non-negotiables you want (CPU + GPU), and do the minimum for the rest. Buy and install the rest yourself. I’m getting better thermal paste (Thermal Grizzly), and pads (once I measure the thickness on the pre-installed ones) to maximize cooling.
Grinding/modding the CPU itself to add liquid metal on the heat spreader is a BAAAD idea. Unless you’re experienced, that’s the fast track to destroy your ~$500 CPU. ...Don’t mess with it.
My 2 cents.Last edited: Feb 13, 2019 -

Ram is 2666 but i guess is locked in bios to 2400.jclausius likes this. -

So BIOS has no RAM options to mess with? Have you tried (or plan to try) faster RAM with an XMP profile?
I’ve read that on other AW notebooks folks have had success with this.
