there is nothing I love better then changing the oil in my car and coming in and going straight to my laptop, keeps it so shiny and slick.

I saw the bios pics and everyone talking about it being super locked down. My msi bios was like this until I pressed a special key combo. This could also be the case for you guys. If any users here have experience with previous alienware models and know the key combos, try seeing if they will work on the 51m.

No way in hell this gets delivered by 2/19 or 2/20. One issue after another. First power cord that got fixed for me now they are saying an LCD screen is on back order and can't even provide me a ship date! What makes it better i'm seeing people who ordered after mine get their's already (a week earlier than they were suppose to) Not sure what the heck is going on over there. I guess being early to buy in this case was a bad idea!

@gt83vr6reHelp
Please can you share the key combo? Does it have to be applied in Bios screen?Fire Tiger likes this. -
What LCD did you configure with?
Prior to knowing it was on backorder, did your order status page say “Your custom-built item is complete.”? Mine does right now :S I’m afraid it will be delayed! -
Part details : LCD : T7X4G 17.3" FHD (1920 x 1080) 144Hz Anti-Glare IPS Display with Tobii eyetracking technology
Mine did say Your custom-build item is complete on Tuesday and Wednesday then yesterday got taken off and now getting this delay. -
What happened with the member who received a 9900k and rtx 2080? Would love to know what the best model can do and how far can it be pushed.

Awww crap.
My part number is 391-BEBC - 17.3" FHD (1920 x 1080) 144Hz Anti-Glare IPS Display w/ NVIDIA G-SYNC + Tobii eyetracking technology
Fingers crossed somehow it doesn’t get delayed. My order was already cancelled and resubmitted thanks to the power cord debacle. Went from Feb. 20 to Feb. 27 already

I told my perosn that I would upgrade to that to get it going not sure yet... On the Power cord i had the same thing. After a day of talking with Frank Azor on twitter it didn't get cancelled held the same ship date. Here is what I got after complaining like crazy lol
We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you today however in concern to get the order delivered to you on time we have checked with the back end team and got the confirmation now your order need not be cancelled or entered And the Power Cord : 180W power cord mod#8P085. Will be sent separately to you .
Thanks for your support and continuous updates. -
Well that was something haha... I called ahead to ask why it was taking SOOO long and if there was a possibility to receive the laptop before the 20th since I had ordered a month before, and was notified about the back end problem. I think I was probably among the first, and was told the ONLY thing that could be done was cancel and resubmit the order and that EVERYONE would have to do this, so I went with it right away... lo and behold; Feb. 27 delivery date. lol q.q
This is probably the kind of thing that I shouldn’t have done anything about and would have probably not known about and would have been fine -.-, it got resolved on its own. -
Yeah I still haven't gotten a new ship date on the LCD screen and no word from Frank on Twitter yet hoping for the best but I may just end up cancelling it. I don't mind delays but I don't like the run-around that i'm getting. I HATE having to call up to check on an order to be notified that there is something wrong with my order. Dell is a big enough company where they should have a system that when something happens that causes a delay or a cancellation that should be send to your order status and the email on file that you placed the order with (maybe even a phone call)

I’m on the same boat, I’m getting a bit fed up lol! The Clevo DTR monster looks tempting

that is pretty interesting. Has a full desktop CPU option and the 2080. Might have to take a look at that as well.
-
Hello, could be. I expect Samsung magician doesn't work on OEM Drives so this is probably no option.
You could tests out with SIV (System Information Viewer) or HDDScan . But I expect you will probably get the same outcome. You could later swap to ACHI for more hardware info reading in software.
Regardless, try run ATTO Disk Benchmark who will give you an clean nice results graph (see pict). You will most likely see if the ssd temp is too high. Run it two/three times in a row and post screen shoot. Most ssd' brands models will throttle down the speed if temp pass the throttle threshold (70C).

Look in previous posts. There’s a link to 3D Mark benchmarks somewhere... it beats the 51M on every front.
Only reasons I’m tempted to keep this are: looks/aesthetics, upgradeable graphics with commitment from Alienware themselves (not MXM GPUs), smaller/sleeker form factor, and warranty/parts support.
I got burned BAD by Clevo when my P150HM became EOL after a year. I upgraded the MXM GPU from a 485M to running a 680M on it with modded drivers and my BIOS doesn’t detect the card/officially support it. The card and heatsinks were designed for the evolution platform the P150EM. So, it fit physically, but the a-holes never truly supported my rig. Custom BIOS never surfaced, and I, with many, many others were left forgotten. I kind of despise Clevo for that, and I’ve seen friends enjoy their Alienware rigs for many many years, often going through the R1/2/3/4/5 cycle and being able to upgrade some things along the way. This platform looks like the kind that will definitely go through R1/2/3/4/5 and we’ll get next gen GPUs to keep upgrading. -
Thats my hope and why I’m willing to spend the premium that seems to come with Alienware (51m will be my first one).Virale likes this.

I am pretty sure that "piece of plastic" is probably metal and it would be there as a heat sink. There is likely a thermal pad under that plate. The M.2 drives are secured with a screw, so you don't need that part to install an M.2 drive in the second slot. You would only need a screw if one is not provided (and it looks like there is a screw already there and waiting to be used). As long as there is enough space you could use an aftermarket heat sink, and it would most likely work better than the stock part.Last edited: Feb 15, 2019

Dell definitely has a "Dont say anything and they won't notice." mentality. Chances are your delivery date would've came and no updates. Then they would probably give you a new delivery date and not tell you.
Fingers crossed they don't have any more excuses. -
That is correct sir, as discussed in previous posts. I’ve done some research and came across the part number, it is JV98R, and for anyone interested, you can purchase them certified refurbished from Dell Parts and Service support. I’m submitting an order for 2 as I type!
We’ll see how hot/cool they run with these + Fujipoly pads. Then I’ll think about 3rd party heatsinks.
Hope this helps others! -
Awesome. I did not see the other posts. Thanks, bud.

This has never been the case on AW and won't never be. We could flash prema unlocked bioses until they started signing the bios with a private key we don't have (or almost can't extract) from the mobo. There next problem is that every mobo has a unique key, so every motherboard should be read out with an spi programmer, edit bios and then reflash with the spi flasher.
Dell made it hard on purpose.
It's like Apple, you buy an product from them but they still hold you hostage (with a locked down ecosystem/almost no way to repair you phone/tablet/laptop without breaking some parts along the way (like using glued parts and bad practices like that))
For that reason only I wouldn't buy an an AW anymore. The 51m score's off @ninja2000 are my almost stocks score's and that's due to the bios. The CPU cannot run full power and never probably will. If I'm wrong please correct meVistar Shook, Ashtrix, raz8020 and 1 other person like this. -
Oh good lord! I just noticed something I think you guys are gonna get a laugh out of. So one of the other reps that told me they can't give me any information and it's being handled by the backend team and I can't contact them.
Well my new rep that I have a direct email, phone with extension too is a Sales Specialist. . .of the Back End team.
I must be special to have such a privilege to talk to the magnificent Back End team.

It's usually a proprietary code, for my MSI laptop is it right shift+ right control + left alt + f2 while in the bios. Not sure if it is the same for alienware. If it works, It opens up a plethora of options. Use at your own risk! -
So far she's good. She's timely with responses and I haven't caught her in a lie yet. If things go well maybe I'll finally have that rep I know that can get me discounts on future orders.
And all it took was some hair from my balding head.demitrisln likes this. -
How did you get a hold of her did you find an email address online or transferred thru the phone system? Might give it a go as well

Use Dell Chat, or call, to Parts and Service. As you’ve noticed, it cannot be found in the website as-is. You can, however, order it by the means I describe above. I provided my card details on the chat and everything, it’s very easy. Just provide the part number.
I googled first as well, but we shouldn’t. Those are scalpers trying to make a quick buck. FYI: They’re $4.99 straight from Dell, shipping included. DO NOT pay more than this.

Well when I found put about my order being on hold because of the power supply nonsense I called Order Management or something to get the order canceled and reordered. Because they can't just send me the missing or correct ones separate. So the first guy was gonna help me cancel and reorder and we got disconnected. I call back and get another guy. He says it was being taken care of by the back end team and there was nothing more he can do. I tried explaining I was just on the phone with someone in his department that was gonna cancel and reorder. Not an option according to him. So I tell him give me the Back End teams phone number so I can talk with them. They don't have a phone number. At this point I straight up lost it. Told him forget it and cancel the order. He tried to tell me to give them time and I refused. Within the hour I got my refund.
I then got an email from Dell Sales Manager. He told me we don't need to cancel((even though that was already done)) and to give them time. I responded by saying unless I get a discount ((I'm not saying how much I asked for)) and express shipping that I wasn't interested. A few days later the Back End sales rep contacted me and gave me 10% discount on my old order configuration and free express shipping.
So I yelled at rep for not letting me talk to the right department and canceled my order. They came back real quick wanting my money. -
Got my system aswell today, 9700 i7 and RTX2080. Deeply impressed with it. Temps @ max low 90's when running full tilt.
GPU mostly @ 50 / 60 degrees. So much better then the 17R5. With a repaste this thing is gonna be a beast!
Clocks from cpu are at 4,7 all the time, no dips.steberg, iron_megalith, c69k and 7 others like this. -
I watched cinebench and hwmonitor at the same time and the cpu stayed at 4.6ghz the whole time! Could it be the 2400mhz ram bringing the score down?

Do you have a direct link to this heatsink ? On partsPeople they are out of stock.

Well done mate!
Can you run 3dmark timespy and firestrike? Really want to compare the 2080 against my 2070 -
@Papusan - Strange. I will run it again now I am on the 1.2 bios and see what I get
-
Max fan? Whats your room temperature?
-
You need to go to dell.com, and chat with a parts and service rep. Ask for the part by part number and they will order it for you.
-
Congrats. How would you describe the fan noise on a 2080 build at full load?
-
I don't have the firestrike 3D mark. But the timespy stock = 9792 points. (Graphics score 10.580 and CPU: 6886.)
Room temp @ 21 / 22 degrees. I have the Dark side of the moon color, if you want a picture of it no problem.
Build quality is top notch. The AW 51M is smaller then my17r5.
