Yes good choice.
I'm working on definition of thickness of various pads.
As you can see using 1.5mm some of the hottest points have no contact with the heatsink! This obviously was also with stock pad.

It's not working yet, they are aware of the issue and I am told they are working on it. I don't really know if there is any kind of timeframe.Melvin Rousseau, normand668 and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

That's very strange - it seems like the heatsink is not perfectly even? Last week I have repasted mine but sadly I didn't take pictures of my thermal pads. I only saw that the pads are thicker than the pads showed by @Melvin Rousseau .
The pad on your photos (where there is obvious no contact) on my laptop was not correctly placed - it was on the upper pad
Sadly, today I didn't receive the thermal pads, so the day will be tomorrow.
I think if you put 0.5mm underneath the part where there is no contact, probably it would be ok. You have to turn around the big pad to see if there will still be contact into the upper part (the one that is showing perfect contact on the pictures).
How much pad did you waste for those pictures? -
I'll also add a pad on the upper zone (semm there's something that need cooling).
I used only one 80x40x1.5mm pad

You should get 2 m.2 slots, but you won't get any extra cover brackets pn: 3n3w3.
You also will not get the interposer board and cable needed to add the additional two m.2 slots #3&4.
I just went through this with the same problem. See my post a few posts back. -
Did you get a before and after?
-
Correct, it is not supported. This is confirmed on their website in the questions/reviews section.

Hello, Melvin posted the "before" temp here:
100 degrees a throttling!

I unboxed and turned my brand new R2 on for the first time.
There was a brief oddity in the setup screen where you can adjust what data you want to send to Microsoft - the mouse cursor kept on moving left and right only - so I used the tab and space keys to navigate and disable. But after that screen, the mouse had no issues whatsoever.
I suppose it’s so far so good.
---
I'll also add that my R2 has 64GB 3200Mhz (or technically 3191ish Mhz according to AWCC) RAM courtesy of HID. According to HWInfo, the RAM model part number is KHX3200C20S4/32GX from Kingston.
Also, coming from years of high DPI on MacBooks and iPads, maybe my eyes aren't what they used to be anymore, but I find the FHD 300Hz display on this laptop to be very visually pleasing (at least on text-filled webpages, haven't fired up any games yet). It seems plenty bright enough in my eyes, and I don't see any jagged lines whatsoever.Last edited: Oct 21, 2020FXi likes this. -

I can confirm that if you go for gelid gc extreme you definitely need to put 1.5 mm pads at those spots as they will not have a good contact if you go with 1 mm
The fujipoly extreme are so thick that 1 mm provides enough contact though -
Yeah, for sure I will go with 1.5mm or 2.0mm. Will check what contact will do with both sizes and after that I will post here some pictures.
The only thing that concerns me is that if I put 2 pads one over another I don't know if it would be ok because I didn't order pads with 1.5mm or 2mm thickness. -
Melvin Rousseau Notebook Consultant
I tried 2 mm and it is definitely too thick and will reduce the contact with the cpu/heatsink
Of course each heatsink is different but I would avoid going any thicker
Stacking pads is okay even though it's not the best thing to do .
Cannot confirm if it will affect the tempsb.kolev likes this. -

Is that on Full speed or Performance profile? It looks very good. But as I know you got delidded CPU, right?
-
Melvin Rousseau Notebook Consultant
Yes it is on full speed
Yes the delided cpu was definitely a must do thing especially if you go with the i9 10900k
I can overclock my cpu 5,1 all cores and while gaming my temps never go over 80 degreesnormand668 and b.kolev like this. -
At this point I start thinking my pc or heatsink is defective. As you can see from the above photos with 1.5mm I have no contact in some areas!
It's better if I reinstall all of the stock pad and contact Dell assistance?

The main question is what are your thermals like ? -
100 degrees and throttling with cinebench and 86 degrees on light gsming (Guild Wars 2 capped at 60fps).
I've also never seen more than 4700/4800mhz in light singke thred tests (cpuz).
My desktop with 10700k air cooled not delidded go regularly with higher clock frequency on ST app....

Really sorry to head that, @Satanello! I think your heatsink obviously has problem.
My system is similar to yours - I7 10700K and 2080S. My temperatures in Metro Exodus at MAX settings (no capped FPS) are 85-90C with -0.100mW undervolt + balanced profile at 4.7-4.8Ghz. Games like Heroes of the storm, League of legends ~60-70C.
If I was you, definitely I would call DELL for a new heatsink
As I saw on your photos - this is not acceptable that the thermal pad has obvious contact in left but in right there is nothing.
If you want wait for 2-3 hours. I just received my thermal pads and now I will disassemble the laptop and will took photos on my heatsink. -
I have run my new R2 through its paces, and noticed something.
When I bring my ear close to the laptop speakers, I hear some kind of soft static regardless of whether sound is playing or mute.
http://www.mediafire.com/file/8k6d87s14q983kq/New+Recording+2.m4a/file
This recording was taken by pretty much sticking the phone microphone on the speaker. The static-like sound is the sound that is similar to a bicycle chain.
Is this usual? I ever so slightly hear it when I’m in normal typing position and there’s no music or movies playing. -

Try uninstalling the Realtek Audio Console then reboot and see if it makes any differencePapusan likes this. -
A little update after a lot of work....
I should test if everything is ok but seem that all the components could be cooled by the heatsink now.

I have now the AW 51m R2 version and even I have the non 10700 version and 2060 version, its fast. I was worried about the keyboard but as Spartan said, it is very comfortable. I will be lurking this area just to increase the performance on this laptop. The stock temps is also decent.

Has anyone tried a rockit copper IHS delid with the 10900k I'm the 52M R2?
I think this may be a better option than even worrying about the silicon lottery. I was tapping 100c at 4.9ghz on the machine I just returned with -70 to -100 undervolt. Would like to see 5.1ghz and stable 80-85c temps.
What T.I.M. would y'all use? I was thinking Grizzly conductonaut on the delid.
Not sure what to use on the IHS to heatsink. Any recommendations? -
Hi All,
I am curious about what's happening with my Temps:
Stock Temps while gaming (Call of Duty MW): 82C (Max)
I applied Arctic MX-4 yesterday and this is happening
Gaming (Call of Duty MW): 77C (Max) - Yesterday
Gaming (Call of Duty MW): 86C (Max) - Today. Also worth mentioning the temp does not go lower than 86C until the match ends in the game.
Nothing changed between today and yesterday after applying the paste. Room temperature is roughly the same too. Can anyone shed some light into why this might be happening?
My idle temps seem to be better than before. Only temps under load seem to be higher. -
No difference as far as I can tell.
For what it's worth, I also seem to be able to hear it at booting before Windows login takes over. I don't think it's a software thing.
EDIT: I'm an idiot. I thought the hexagonal grid above the keyboard was the speakers. It turns out the speakers are below the palmrest.
That grid was where the noise I picked up is coming from.Last edited: Oct 22, 2020Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

So do you get any good results after the procedure? My temps are absolutely the same as before (I ended with GP Extreme). Only on GPU gone worse so I returned the OEM pads there. My system needs 2mm pads on both cpu and gpu. The GP Ultimate is just a trash for our model because they are a bit harder than Extreme and personally I got worse temperatures stacking 1mm + 1mm. Just we need the right sizes. Also I got the same no contact as your heatsink on the longest pad on the cpu. Upper part is making contact but the down doesn't so I did the same as your photos.
Generally speaking on my system the size of the pads is different than @Melvin Rousseau. I will order 2mm and will try again for better results.
P.S. I spoke with company, here in Bulgaria, about CPU delidding. They told me that the ihs of 10th gen Intel is soldered. Is that true? As I saw many pictures and videos on internet I don't think the IHS of the cpu is soldered to the chip. Some other opinions? -
Is that grid supposed to be part of the cooling mechanism?

Okay. I was expecting this to be noisy - I didn’t know just what kind of noise to expect other than fan noise.

Hello, two weeks ago my area 51m R2 arrived and it brought that noise (Coil whine) that you have, they made me change the fans but the sound was still on, so they managed a change of equipment, it still hasn't arrived ... p.d. the technician left me the fans so I stay a spare ... -
So this is coil whine. Never encountered it. I think I can put up with it; I noticed I ended up tuning it out subconsciously.
On a different note - I seem to have fallen victim to the eternally loading Alienware Command Center issue. I followed instructions here ( https://www.dell.com/support/articl...einstall-the-alienware-command-center?lang=en) but no dice. Any other tips? -
Hi All,
I had a few questions. Does the R2 fan (GPU and CPU) run on slow speeds at idle. Mine just turns off and idle temps got to 55-60C for both CPU and GPU.
I have used Arctic MX-4 for both the CPU and GPU but it seems that now I am getting a slower temperature rise for both but a higher one for GPU. It seems that the Dan runs at max 50% speed even while gaming.
If anyone here has 10900k and 2080S, what's the highest GPU temperature they have seen in 3DMark with a balanced fan profile. -

That guide is old.
See:
After the clean install, reboot
Install the Command Center then reboot
Install Alienware OC Controls, when it says Restart, don't restart yet, wait for 3 minutes, then reboot. It may seem like it finished but I give it 3 minutes as it seems to be loading the OC profiles in the background since you will see the hourglass loading icon on the mouse when you have the OC Controls installation window.
Reboot
Wait for 4 minutes after the reboot. now launch the Alienware Command Center -
You forgot to say, spin anti-clockwise 3 times then click your fingers twice and say 3 Hail Mary's.Spartan@HIDevolution and kylera like this.
-
1-Follow @Spartan@HIDevolution guide on how to clean install.
2-After: Go into services and select AWCC (service) and change the startup to AUTOMATIC
Whenever you want to restart AWCC (this will happened often because this software is full of bugs even when correctly installed) this is where you will have to do it. You terminate the service and then reboot it,

Thank you to both of you for your tips. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work at all, so I ended up restoring from the most recent drive image (thanks for Macrium, Spartan!), and followed @Normimb's recommendation to set the AWCC service to automatic startup rather than automatic delayed. The worst I lost was my browsing history starting from last night until this morning, so basically nothing of tremendous value.
Now to let Steam continue downloading my games while I go get some errands out of the way...Normimb and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

RIP Umar. I've got a few quick change survival tips for the remaining AW employees:
1. Delete your Twitter account - the new boss doesn't like it and neither should you
2. Community is a dirty word - don't read, or worse yet, participate in user forums
3. Study Acer designs and implement as many similar features as you can (e.g. soldered RAM, inverted mobo - these help drive the cancerous "community" away which provides a peace of mind in addition to extra profit per unit)
4. Wear your "Dell" T-shirt and other apparel like you were told. It's OK to wear Acer T-shirts on Fridays, nothing wrong with being aspirationalRei Fukai, raz8020, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
I just took a look at the BIOS as I wanted to look for ways to minimize battery wear. I noticed there are two options that prioritize on adapter usage: Primarily AC Use and Custom, where I can set the percentage limits myself.
I’m oh so rarely going to use this unplugged in the first place. Which option would be better, and if custom, what are good low and high limit recommendations? -
I would like to know also wich one is better. For example: i had my battery replaced a month ago. It showed 2% battery wear for the first 2 weeks (i was happy). Bios was set to adaptative and now 8%wear already!!!
The previous battey my bios was set to: Primarly AC used. Ater 6 months=20% battery wear!!!
Seems like adaptative and primarly ACused is not good for longevity.
It seems those battery wear very fast. I understant @Spartan@HIDevolution suggest to set bios to 20 to 90% (something like that) i never tried this setting so far (i don't like the idea of having 90% of battery when i need to use my laptop on battery) . But maybe it is the best setting, i need to test.
My observation so far has showed me that whenever i completely discharge the battery, then only, the pourcentage drops dramaticaly on the next charge, like 5 to 6 % of battery wear (it used to be different with previous alienware laptop i owned). -
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
Custom, leave everything at default which is 50-90 and never worry about the batteryninedragons, kylera and Normimb like this. -
Done!
Now let's see in a month if my battery wear is stable. Hoppefully better then the other two settings i have tried.Papusan likes this. -
Cool, thanks! I just set it, but for now, the laptop will stay idle. I started cleaning my desk to make room for it...which led to me dumping things on the floor or the bed...which led to me pretty much cleaning the whole room.
