You flash using nvflash and point it to the bin file. https://www.techpowerup.com/download/nvidia-nvflash/

However this is just a stock bios i posted it's not custom so i don't think it's worth your time to flash as it will be the same as you currently have.

Ah ok, I thought I read where this was a 200w bios update...
10-4 Thanks for the info, just curious on the bios flashing. I just picked up an M15 R5 that has pretty limped performance on the GPU and may flash for higher wattage for it.

Our Area51m's always had the 200w bios. It was the thinner m17r3 which has the 150w 2080 super variant.

My R2 atm is not exploded and seem to be running well :D

I'm the only one with bios and os updated to the last version? :)

    Hello!

I'am new here and I came from germany(sorry for my englisch :)) and i'am searching for overclocking my Area 51M R2 from April 2021 with 2080 RTX mobile, 10900K CPU and 64GB Memory 2933MHz.

Then i found your very long thread and the wonderful benchmark with OC from User captn.ko with this fantastic results in Time Spy.
What are the settings in Alien Ware Command Center to get this also in my laptop? Or must I take a other OC-Software to get this points in Time Spy?
I try to find a way to ask captn.ko directly over private message but I can't see this feature on this side.

    Thanks for help!

I ask me, if i'am to late for this forum?? Are here still reading a lot of people now or is this thread dead?

Is here somebody who knows in equal Overclocking Software which is working on a Area 51m R2 with 10900K and 2080RTX mobile the solid adjustment to come in Time Spy from 11350 to 12345 Score?? User captn.ko has this results on his screenshots. Knows someone him and can say to him, i want to get his settings?
Or is here from one of the 381 pages a side where are the best results for my combination of my Laptop is written?

    Thanks for helping!

    Hallo Nachbar! :)

Yeah, that's a bit of a sisyphean work. But as a starting point you might have a look at the following link

    Hallo Nachbar sound‘s good :) !

I live in the middle of Hamburg. Wonderful that you start to help me to get the right steps for overclock/undervolting!
I start with the first 2 tests in the Alienware Command Center. I use this settings i found in your link:

„I've got a modest overlock of 180mhz on the gpu core and 150mhz on the memory. Cpu has a -95mv undervolt.“

The first problem i got was, how should i make the undervolt process for the cpu setting? It is possible at automaticly on Offset or manuell. My first run was automatic offset and TimeSpy gives me a result of ~ 11930 score. Then i make the second test with manuell and Time Spy says the first time mistake no results by grafik test 2 and stops testing = 0 score.

    My questions:

    1. Can i get more power without changing something of cooling paste or using extra cooling system, if i use other OC software, then the Alienware Command Center? Have the other OC programs important extra functions to help getting more speed?

    2. My wish is to use a profil with ultimative power, OC and the fans should run under modus power NOT full speed. All benchmark and games should never crash with the settings using it under normal room temperature like the factory overclocking profil 1+2. But i don‘t wont lose possible power with better settings! Maybe someone knows what to set for my wish in Alienware Command Center or other OC Software by using 10900K/2080RTX Mobile. Thanks!

Use Throttle Stop not the ACC. You can create up to 4 Profiles which you can activate by selecting them on the fly! Just change the three values you mentioned and only these ones if you're not proficient in oc'ing.

It's super easy and more stable than ACC. Furthermore - and to be honest - the first thing to change is the thermal paste crap from DELL! There is a very good thread here in NBR for that.

Okay, i should change ACC to Throttle Stop. I want to change both CPU and GPU, if i understand it correct than can Throttle Stop only Intel CPU's.
Is it possible to get a very good programm for both (maybe for money)?

As others have already said ... Throttle Stop is really easy/great for overclocking the Area51m R2 ... I love it. I've never used AWCC for overclocking but I do like it for other things like fan control and per game management of the same.

And to answer your question, I use Throttle Stop to manage my three main overclock settings/profiles; I have it set to autoload with Windows and it puts a small red icon in the task bar tray. Switching between the three profiles is as easy as right clicking the tray icon and selecting one of the three profiles. And the frequency change is instant:
    • Profile #1: CPU set at 3.8ghz which I use all day at work for web browsing, Youtube/Netflix and productivity stuff like letter writing and spread sheets.
    • Profile #2: CPU set at 4.5ghz for gaming which keeps my CPU temps about 30% cooler (really) than if running at 5.0ghz while being just as fast in FPS
    • Profile #3: CPU set at 5.0ghz for the occasions that I might find myself doing video editing/rendering and batch image processing which is the only scenario I've found that max CPU clock speed really matters
For my GPU I have always used MSI Afterburner for overclocking and also have it set to autoload with Windows. I only enable the GPU overclock when gaming, however.

As far as an "all in one" solution for managing your CPU/GPU overclock? I can't help you there and not sure if a solid option for such even exists. But the above has worked very well for me.

    Best of luck...

Almost 9 months with the Area51m R2 and still zero complaints/issues. I actually kneel before the T3ch G0dz each morning (occasionally sacrificing a goat) and pray that they let it last for the life of it's 5 year warranty and beyond. I shudder to think of a complete system failure and having to swap for one of those new fangled, dumbed down "potato chip" laptops that AW is going with now. :p That would be a nightmare as I consider the A51m R2 to be the best bit of chassis design I've ever used (though I slightly prefer the flush/old school AW keyboard that came with the R1 version).

So in the interest of longevity and even though my rig never throttles on CPU/GPU ... I'm still constantly thinking of ways to get the CPU temps down even more as it can at times approach the upper 80's (celcius) when running at 5ghz but generally averages around 70-75C. The GPU is never an issue, always being in mid 60's but if I run at 5.0ghz then CPU temps can get up a bit.

    But on to my question:

Has anybody ever dared to run an Area51m R2 10700K or 10900K in a direct die mount configuration? Ya'll think this would make any significant difference in temps? Is it even possible? Man, it might take a dual goat sacrifice to make it happen but I'm willing to try LOL.

I've already repasted and saw a slight improvement but honestly, only a few degrees difference versus stock paste and I intend to re pad eventually but the whole direct die mount is always banging around in my brain as a possibility since our machines use a typical CPU bracket and desktop CPU.

I'm at least going to lap the 10700K soon and most likely the heatsink as well but I think direct die, done correctly, could possibly yield some decent results.

    Thanks for any comments...

You cant run a 12th Gen in the Alienware Area 51m R2. The sockets are different entirely. You can run a 11th gen and a 10th gen both tested and discussed in this very thread.
Unless i am missing something and I doubt that very much.

Is there even a kit out for that? I doubt it. the 10th gen didn't get much more than 10c at best from a good cooler contact. Honestly I wouldn't bother pulling it apart unless you are having a heating problem. I live in Australia so ambient temps are high here so I did repaste the 10900k laptop and didn't bother with the 10700k repaste because it was cooler by a decent amount.

Direct die mounting has been around for ages ... and sure, there are well known and reputable kits for the 10th gen (and others) from providers such as Rockit Cool but I'm not sure if said kits would work with the Area51m R2's specific motherboard or the generally tight confines of a laptop interior. But it's an interesting thing to ponder on and research, nonetheless. I'll most likely just stick with a solid lap job on the IHS and be happy with that...

And the "pulling apart" bit is no issue at this point. I actually look forward to it as I've done it about ten times and it's pretty much muscle memory at this point LOL. Need to switch out them stock pads anyway so I'll just make a day of it and do the CPU lapping and re padding all in one go.

I know Direct Die mounting has been around for ages but that's inside of PC's. Doing it in a laptop with mm's of tolerances is a totally different beast. Yes, there PC chips inside of a laptop but you the ****ing around with the gapping in the chip alone will be an endless **** around I am talking reassemble disassemble upwards of 10 times and maybe more if you're unlucky. I work in the industry pulling down a laptop is easy for me and I do it multiple times a day for everything from a 1st gen I3 laptop for granny who doesn't want to throw away her old laptop she paid so much money from all the way threw to the latest and greatest laptops that silly people spill things on. I think the gains are not worth it for direct die even if you could work out the tolerance differences. Put a good paste on maybe change the thermal pads for good quality and be done with it.
One piece of advice about the Alienware area 51m R2 is be VERY careful with the wifi chip.

Before trying the Direct Die method: did you delid your CPU? If not, then you should gain a decent amount of improvement - even more with LM between Die and IHS.

I'm considering it too, but: my RockIt Delidding-Tool is from Skylake-Ages. Your link to their Homepage makes me wonder if my "Skylake" Delidding Tool is compatible with a 10900k?

Even the late great Silicon Lottery said that it just wasn't worth it, at best delidding will get you 10c if you have a best-case sample.
I stand by my previous statement Thermal paste and pads and call it a day. Maybe consider upgrading the wifi chip.

    Word.

I would tend to agree on direct die, kind of a pipe dream but still curious if anybody ever tried it. Delidding a 10th gen, like you say, does only garner 5C-10C if done correctly. But I'd take that ... especially if I got 10C drop at load. The Rockit Cool copper IHS also can contribute 2C-3C and has been tested to show such with it's main benefit being overall greater surface area but think I'll just lap mine and be done with it. I personally love the lapping process and it too gives (in general) quite minor gains only but fun nonetheless.

Re: WIFi "chip" ... do you mean the card that comes factory installed? I've had no issue with it but did source a backup Intel card just in case. I know the contacts/connection can be fragile which is why I never disconnect it when tearing down the laptop ... I just leave it connected and fold it back out of the way ... same with the cables routed through that "foil" looking shroud ... leave them all routed and fold the shroud back out of the way. Saves a few seconds here and there ...

    Thanks for the comments...

Rocket Cool's older delidder should work for 10th gen in same way as Der8auer old delidder.

Try get an binned 10900K, custom nickel plated IHS, delidde it and use liquid metal all over. Not much more can be done.

Thanks ... that might just be my next step as I may be able to get just such a binned 10900K already modified/relidded ... possibly from the same fellow who modified and sold me the top 1% binned and super magical 8086K I'm happily using every day in my desktop rig. I'm not sure but I think he goes by some strange alias like iUnClock or Unlockit or LiquidLockMyHZ or something like that here on the NBR forum. ;)

Thanks again for the tip ...

Which is the faster GPU? The 2070 Super that is included in the Area51m R2 machines or the newer, 3070 mobile version that comes with the X17 R1 machines? Just curious ... I don't think the 2070 Super in the AW51m's is a dumbed down mobile chip but I know the new 3070 laptops have a true "mobile" version and so was wondering if there was much performance difference between the two because of that ....

You cannot do anything for that. Only if the system supports 3200 MHz will you be able to make it run. I just installed the 2 RAM sticks and it worked fine without any change into settings.

Yeah, that's a very sh**** move from DELL crippling the RAM speed artificially and not being able to change it afterwards!

In my case 32GB RAM with 3200MHz wasn't available "with my configuration" on DELL Homepage so I chose 2933 instead. Now I'm f***ed and stuck with that speed. Dunno if that makes a huge difference in daily use, which I presume it doesn't but it's angering me anyways....

After about two years of sleepless turnarounds at night, I finally bought an Area 51m-r2.
What finally helped me making this decision were the benchmarks between "our" A51m R2 and the new X17 (11980HK with RTX 3080), which were not significantly better. The truth of the matter is that "our A51m r2" even performed better in some benchmarks.

I took each individuals best scores and compared them:
https://www.3dmark.com/compare/spy/18591464/spy/22196459# (RTX 3080 Wins with only 805 points more)

https://www.3dmark.com/compare/pcm10exb/116376/pcm10exb/139524 (A51m-r2 wins with over 600 points!. I think it is because of the Desktop CPU!)

I got a pretty good deal on this machine: 2.400 Euros (about 2700.00 USD)!
    These are the specs:
    • 10th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9 10900K
    • NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) RTX 2080 SUPER(TM) 8GB GDDR6
    • 17.3" FHD (1920 x 1080) 144Hz 9ms 300-nits 72% NTSC color gamut with NVIDIA-GSYNC technology
    • 16GB, 2x8GB, 3200MHz DDR4 XMP
    • 1TB (2x 512GB PCIe M.2 SSD) RAID 0 [Boot] + 1TB 7200 RPM Hard Drive [Storage]
I chose this variant because in the future I will install a larger and faster 2.5 inch HDD, and maybe 2 TB SSD. (The heat sinks, as far as I have understood, are only included if you have configured them in advance) I opted for this, just for peace of mind having the heat sinks, because you can not buy them separately via Dell.
    • Windows 10 Pro

I'm wound up to a high pitch. What are your thoughts?

Maybe I'll do a comparison... lets see

    congrats mate!

I don't know about others here but I consider the Area51m R2 to be the best laptop I've owned thus far. The chassis design, the desktop components used internally, the cooling, etc. are all ace in my opinion and I hope this thing lasts as it is becoming next to impossible to find replacement parts (much less whole units) since the A51m laptops are now discontinued.

    • Do yourself a favor and take out a 3 to 5 year extended warranty, either with Dell or with a 3rd party insurer. I decided to purchase an official Dell extended warranty since even three years from now, if my entire system fails then Dell will still replace the entire system with whatever the equivalent machine is at the time (and since Area51m stock will be long gone at that point).

    • Get a damn good case/backpack to carry it around in. I spent the money on an Iverki backpack and have zero complaints.

    • Treat/handle it as though it were precious ore. It's really a one of it's kind sort of laptop and as mentioned, replacement components direct from Dell are becoming difficult at best to source.

    • Regarding your secondary drive bay? I went with a StarTech M.2 to SATA RAID adapter and am running two 1TB SATA 3 M.2 SSD's in a 2TB RAID0 array instead of sourcing a 2.5" stand alone SSD. Reason was mostly because I had the two extra 1TB M.2 drives laying about. It's worked very well. The only caveat being that even though I'm using x2 SATA3 M.2 drives in RAID0? I'm still limited to the throughput of a single M.2 SATA3 drive since the adapter is communicating through a single SATA3 path. But the same applies when using a single 2.5" SSD in the secondary drive bay so I'm pleased.

    • Familiarize yourself with how to properly tear it down and some day re paste the CPU GPU. Not technically necessary but handy and fun if your in to such things.

    • When gaming? Don't worry about maximum clock speed. Your gaming performance will be the same at 4.5ghz CPU freq as it is at 5.1ghz freq and at the lower CPU clock speed, you will literally see a 20C drop in CPU load temps. Seriously. This is by far the best way to assure excellent CPU temps. That said? I've never once seen my CPU or GPU throttle no matter what clock speeds I run at but I pretty much always game with fan speeds set to 75% to 100%.

Otherwise, enjoy that thing man and congratulations again. My only regret is not getting the 2080 Super but that's quibbling at best. I'm plenty stoked with the 2070 Super and it remains a superb 1080p gaming GPU, which is my typical daily resolution but it's quite capable at 1440p resolution as well which I've tested extensively on my home setup ...

    Best regards,
    ~s1rrah

The only thing I’m regretting though is the display option. I really wanted tobii- eye tracking (windows hello) with g-sync and 100% rgb. Unfortunately this display was not available anymore in my country.

It was really important for me to have g-sync. Not because of fps but maily for the fact that the gpu is connected directly to the display.

i bought this machine also to mine on, and random video editing. And of course some occasional gaming.

I’ve read that it is possible to upgrade the display? Has anyone informations about that? (I don’t think I’m able to read 400 pages )

Mine came with the AU Optronics AUOEC91 panel. It's the 1080p 360hz IPS G-sync variant. It has Tobii and what not though I've never used that feature and have it disabled. I couldn't be more pleased with the panel/screen, though. Perfect IPS 1080p gaming panel in my opinion and with zero bleed or issues of any kind (so far) and it's plenty bright/colorful.

I'm not sure of the exact data in regards to sRGB coverage and what not but here's some info pulled from Notebook check's review:

And I can't help with the panel replacement but somebody here most likely can; I'd guess it's not too difficult of a process, however as I've taken my own machine apart many times and it's fairly easy as notebook tear downs go; I haven't replaced a panel though. And I'm also not sure if you have to have a certain motherboard to support Tobii or not ... so you'd have to do some digging/research.

The AUOEC91 panel can be found online I think ... Aliexpress lists it at $145.00 ...

And primarily for mining? No offense, especially considering I know nothing about mining other than running NBMiner when temperature testing the VRAM on my desktop GPU ... but why would one want to mine on a laptop?

    Best...

You bought a Area-51m laptop for mining?

That is probably the weirdest thing i've read on this forum in a long time.

Yes, I understand your view, but I have been thinking for a very long time about how to approach the whole thing most intelligently.

well, i think i‘ve mentioned it wrong. I should habe said ALSO FOR MINING.
considering it has a desktop cpu and amazing Cooling. So in my opinion it’s the best thing for beginners like me.
I don’t think there is a better option. Considering it’s mighty and astonishing cooling. That’s my opinion.

I’ve never had a desktop PC or a monitor. (Which means that i had not only to buy a pc but also a monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc.)
I‘ve always had a laptop (currently a MacBook Pro 2017 full) To have a really good mining machine, I would easily spend over 8 thousand euros, and that would just be too much money for me. With the a51m-r2 I found a very good compromise to get into mining and also have a super strong laptop.

Dude for real, you could have a bought a 1500$ euro prebuilt desktop with a 3070 and you would have had a return on investment in like 14 months and you wouldn't put your whole machine at risk.
Mining on a laptop is really not recommended, it will void you warranty it will put a LOT of unwanted heat on your whole system and running your fan at 50-100% for an extensive period of time is not good either.

Trust me if you mine on it, it won't last long untill it breaks appart.

Well, there is a sentimental value in this laptop. :DI've been wanting to buy it for two years now :D

I made a mistake: i should have said for occasional mining. Yeah you’re right :D

Well in all respect you guys may have right, but…
This is the reason why i choose this laptop over other systems:
In the a51m r2 are Desktop components with great cooling, where are systems would fail in a short period of time. I choose a laptop for the main reason because i need portability. I have a big apartment and i really want to take my system with me all the time. (Kitchen, bedroom, etc.) i could not do this with a desktop. Also i think that this laptop will handle the heat and stress very well (as i said: desktop parts) in comparison with other laptops. yes: a desktop (in the same price rage) could maybe mine better, but then i wouldn’t have the portability.
for me it’s a great compromise between portability/price/power.

I‘ll try it out for a couple of days. if everything goes well, i’ll be mining for 2-3 days a week. And then i‘ll make my mind up. Hashrates should be amazing on this machine.

    Let’s see

Not really Eth has been crashing for little over 2 months now and with Eth2 coming, the profitability will be even worse.
Even with my 3080, the maximum hash rate i can get is 64MHS and i live in Quebec and the cost of electricity is VERY cheap here. (0.0659$ per KWH)

Let's say i paid my machine the 2400$ EURO you paid for, and mining using my electricity which is very cheap.
Than i can make around 23 Euro a week. Meaning it would take me 2 years of 24-24 7-7 mining with my laptop to pay for your laptop.
Your 2080S probably can do a maximum of 45 or 50 MHS and i'm sure electricity is more expensive in your country so your ROI might be 3 or 3 and a half year.

It's simply not worth it imo but it's your laptop you do what you want with it :p

Hi guys. I would like to know if there is any way to control the lighting of the keyboard and other lights without having Alien command center. I do not like the application, the CPU is out of control, and I have verified that the pc works better without the app. But of course, without it, I can't control the lights. Any suggestion?

By the way, they have published a BIOS update 1.11, I have installed it for the moment and everything is correct.

There is no such thing as too much. Excess will look messy as it get pumped out but too much is better than too little.

I sat down today and read through about 200 pages. And I have to say that there are a lot of useful things here to pick up.
There are things that are being repeated again and again, so I will make the effort, and will summarize some things to simplify everything:

Please correct me If I made a mistake.
Also please make this post as sticky, since I believe it's something that everyone is interested in.
Please Add (or) remove things to this list.

    RAM:
    1. Standard Speed is 2933Mhz. Period. Unless you order XMP 3200Mhz from factory! You can not, and I repeat: you can not upgrade from standard RAM-Configuration (2933Mhz) to 3200Mhz, even if you buy compatible 3200Mhz XMP RAM. You can only get 3200Mhz+ only if you ordered 3200Mhz RAM from factory! Chinese experts found out that only certain dell-approved RAM serial numbers work in the bios. Dell also uses another motherboard to properly support XMP RAM, because of technical reasons.
    2. 64GB HyperX CL20 3200Mhz is compatible. BUT ONLY IF YOU ALREADY HAD XMP ORDERED FROM FACTORY.
    CPU:
    1. 11th Gen. processors are NOT supported. Technically it's compatible, but DELL unlikely will change the Bios-Code to support them.
    2. Delit only if you know what you're doing. A lot of users here have destroyed their CPU's.
    3. Intels 10900XE is NOT supported, because it uses a different socket-type.

    Display:
    1. Display-Update is possible, but very flimsy and risky. It is NOT recommended for the "average user". New screen has to be tapered down with slim 3M-Tape.
    2. You'll get G-Sync only if you already had it before swapping displays! (Same with XMP RAM)
    3. 300Hz + 360Hz displays have pixel problems.

    Graphics:
    1. If you can, get the 2080 Super!
    2. I compared the 2080 Super against the 3080 (X17) and the 2080 Super held up pretty amazingly! These are benchmarks between "our" A51m R2 and the new X17 (11980HK with RTX 3080), which were not significantly better.

Thermals: shoutout to @Normimb thanks again bro
    1. The Area51m r2 has amazing cooling capabilities.
    2. If you want to re-paste it (which is highly recommended), you should use Thermalright TFX for BEST results. --> No Thermal Crizzly Kryonaut, Gelid Extreme, etc. NO, just buy Thermalright TFX. The reason is because you need a very thicc :D Thermalpaste, since the heatsinks are not 100% flat.
    3. Use a lot of Paste (once I get my machine, I will X'it with additional dots in between).
    4. If you constantly put your machine under stress, under no circumstances use other fan-profiles other then "Performance".

    AWCC:

you can go from 2933mhz to 3200mhz by buying the ram xmp with the dell manufacturer reference, the area 51m r2 are all gsync but only the 120hz panel is gsync compatible! if you want to switch from the 120hz panel to 360hz you have to change the conectics as well because the 360hz panel has a pitch of 0.4mm and the other panels (4k panel and 120hz) have a pitch of 0.5mm

I do not think you have read what I stated.
    • You are not able to get 3200Mhz, unless you got XMP RAM from factory! It has been said many many times. Why do think otherwise?
    • No! Not every panel has G-Sync. Please do not spread wrong informations.

Just one question: I ordered mine with 32GB 2933MHz and it came with Samsung labeled with 3200MHz. HWinfo shows running them at 2933MHz. So what's the limitation here?

A "crippled" MoBo or does the RAM specifically must have a XMP Profile unlocked from DELL? If yes my official 3200 RAM from DELL doesn't have this specific XMP-Profile?
