Is there a way to upload/download lighting themes to the AWCC or at least a way to save them? I feel like when I first got this laptop it had a multi-colored theme but after multiple re-installs it's gone now. Didn't know if there was a user database out there with a bunch of different themes that we could download.

Don't forget to unblock the ZIP file before unzipping it otherwise all the extracted files will have a BLOCKED status since this is a file you downloaded from the internet and Windows puts a BLOCKED status on any downloaded file which causes incomplete or erroneous installs. When something seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

9900 (no K), an obsolete 1660 Ti that nobody wants, tiny little 256GB SSD, Windows 10 Home, white stain magnet finish, no memory overclocking, crippled firmware, reliant on buggy Windows AWCC software... not really a great deal if you're looking for something awesome. But, it is cheaper than regular price. Assuming you're OK with the uncorrectable flaws, by the time you replace the CPU with a 9900K, the GPU with a 2070 or 2080, add an SSD of respectable size and upgrade to a legitimate version of Windows 10, the price isn't nearly as attractive. If you use it as shipped, it's kind of like buying a Chevy Camaro with an anemic 4-cylinder wheezer motor. Lots of show, but not much go.

I doubt we'll ever see a better BIOS performance wise than 1.5, stay where you are.

No, never updated to anything above 1.5 for the life of this laptop unless you want to throttle the GPU @ 75C

Is there a faster way to switch fan profiles other than opening up AWCC every time? Kind of annoying that there's no notification tray icon or anything for a quick right click list or something.

Kind of off subject so if I need to move this post somewhere else let me know but...does anyone happen to have a dell coupon of 10-15% that they won't be using? Looking to get an Alienware 25 Gaming Monitor - AW2521HF for my 51m. Or if there is a coupon site that usually posts these that works too. Thanks!

You would think that the key travel is less and that the quality is cheaper after seeing it on picture but trust me once you have it in hands it is pure quality
Feels so smooth and even now going back to my R1 feels weird and not as enjoyable as the R2

So yes it might have looked like at first that dell was trying to cut down costs by putting cheaper components but for the first time I am saying it,this computer is an upgrade in every possible way, cooling, screen, performances, no crippled bios or tweaking software, just gaming and enjoying your time with it :)

The keyboard on the R2 is night and day better than the R1

If you've watched my review I did talk about this in detail.

So monitoring Dell quality(or lack of) sons m15s hybrid drive died on him. Its exactly 14 months old and 2 months past warranty. In my 30 years of Pc ownership I have had 3 drives fail. This is the 2nd on a PC this young.

Fortunately it was his D drive. Just had games. But really.....not cool.

I mean, there is always a chance... but do you think that its possible this was due to too much heat over time? Curious how hot the drive might have gotten... also was this a typical Hynix drive?

Yeah i'd agree with the keyboard the travel isn't very much (1mm travel maybe?) but it has a satisfying snap and bounce. The keys are really solid too with no flex in the keyboard.

I mean that's not really on Dell (They are responsible for a lot of things and QC issues), but they only do the same as every OEM and buy a Seagate or WD, Toshiba ect. Drive.

It's on the drive manufacturer. Its a completely standard part.

I am betting my money that SSHD drive is a Seagate Firecuda POS! Seagate has the worst reliability ever. I remember a few years back I bought a brand new Seagate 4TB External HDD (which was 2x2 TBin RAID 0). It failed after literally 2 days so I refunded it.

Furthermore, that SSHD causes a huge lag because every time you try to access your file system, you will get a slight freeze until the SSHD spins up. Just do yourself a favor and put any cheap SSD in it and toss that thing in the garbage. Yes I agree Dell should use higher quality components especially for Alienware machines.

It’s up to the OEM what hardware they prefer put into their machines. Why use hardware that have bad reliability? The answer... Cut costs! Lower priced machines is easier to sell.

only 2 drives i have ever had fail were Seagates. they were external 4tb hard drives for my xbox one x. both lasted almost exactly one year. i'm on my 3rd because they are cheap, but now it's just as expensive as if i just bought a nice SSD instead for the xbox one x in the first place. lol.

I'd like to see some numbers - I think in general it would be modest with the Super cards and slight chip increase - maybe 10-15%?

Honestly unless you’re on a REALLY old gen (like my upgrade from a 680M to 2080 RTX) then you can make your case for wanting the R2 right now.

If you’re coming from a 980 or 1080 and thinking about going to the R2 for a 2080 Super, I think it’s worth waiting a few months for the 3080... BUT that’s me and my tolerance to wait for things...

I’d rather get the best of the best right when it’s available than midway lifecycle upgrades (which the 2080 Super is... it’s just a 2080 with a bit more juice that was intentionally held back by Nvidia just to be able to release SOMETHING between the 2080 and the 3080, which I despise).

    My opinion!

I think you can always make a case for getting what does what you want at the price you want :) But agreed, in general at the beginning of a cycle is best. I am curious how they plan to sell "upgrades" since they basically screwed R1 owners. I might even consider selling my R1 if I didn't think I would take a bath on it... and getting an R2 once the 3-series cards are out. Without upgrade options its a tough sell.

I’m still enjoying the R1 very much and have no aspirations to update to the R2 which does seem like a refresh but not a major update.- I could be wrong here though. I also came from an m17xr4 with 680m and the upgrade is huge.

I did have some problems to begin with when I bought it in March this year namely:
    • Stuck pixel- screen replaced as result
    • Very loud coil whine. - heat sync replaced. Did not fix the issue (not surprisingly) so motherboard and cpu replaced. Coil whine reduced but still some there.
    • AWCC software restriction- temp slider stuck at 75c - a bit annoying but I guess they did this to stop burned out units. I’m aware of the workaround but not having much an issue with it at 75c for now.
    • Bios very restricted- not sure if R2 is better? I’d like to see more options in this regard.
    • Tobii is a bit of a resource hog and sometimes just stops working. Still not sure it’s worth the extra money.
A lot of the issues were resolved from dell When I reported them but I still had to go through all the loops i.e evidence / photos/ recordings, to get people booked to come round to my house and replace parts- which was a pain. And not something I expected from a very expensive laptop.

Maybe I’ll see what the R3 has to offer. Hopefully something a bit better QA wise.
