Keep an eye on them, the guy who fixed my screen was a bit heavy-handed and he didn't know how to get the back tron panel off. He was about to start leveraging it with a screwdriver when I had to remind him about the screws on the I/O panel.

Uhg, will do it for sure, for the moment I have prepared some thermal paste for him tu use to be sure they don't put any junk there, and I talk before to him saying that we will need to see the CPU temperature in game because it was 100º in BFV when the laptop came right out of the box.

I don't have thermal pads, but I hope it's not stricly necessary

I think one of our more experienced members Spartan repasted his machine without touching the thermal pads and still saw a decent improvement using Phobya Nanogrease.

I'm going to attempt a repaste over the Christmas holidays but may bottle it as I've never done a repaste in my life.

Yeah, I purchased that one and managed to get it to fit. There's a thread on here where someone bought two and managed to fit both of them.

It's fairly easy, just take your time and you'll be good

Its the putting it back together I'm more worried about haha no doubt I'll end up with 5 spare screws and the thing will fall apart the first time I lift it up.

No, your being too modest. Have confidence and I'm certain you'll get it done without too many problems. After you've stripped it down and put it back together once you'll do it better the second time around.

Has anyone upgraded to the Intel AX200NGW card, did you notice any improvement to wifi or Bluetooth? Thinking whilst I have it open I might as well replace this card if its beneficial to do so. I don't have a wifi 6 router yet and probably won't bother with one.

Probably won't help much, but it's worth a shot. The Rockitcool copper IHS never helped my temps. It was the same as stock on the 8700K and worse than stock on the 7960X. But, even if the temps are the same it will at least keep the stock IHS new and clean in case you ever decide to sell the CPU. Liquid metal stains the IHS. That doesn't hurt anything at all, but some people are really weirdos about that kind of thing.

Horrible if you mean the OOBE. But, that is true of all laptops. The thermals will not be good on any laptop unless you do something about it by cracking it open and taking matters into your own hands because the people that make them are either dumb, or don't care, or both. Sadly, paying a higher than normal price for having something fancy doesn't fix that problem.

There is no point swap for a copper IHS if the lid have same heigh. Maybe worth it if you have to sand down the orginal due Intels lid is more concave than you prefer (sand down the IHS means you'll get less pressure).

Regarding the stain. Can be removed if you put some work on it. I didn't do much for this one below. But I'm not so conserned about new and shiny that I never use :) The pict is blurry so the results is much better than it looks.

How IHS looks after being exposed to Liquid metal for 1.5 years. Before and after cleaning.

You find pictures in the spoiler if you clicked the link. I prefer Liquid metal. Have used it many years. But bad fits means you'll need to re-apply LM before you have to. Do it correct and it will last long time.

So, the tech guy changed my motherboard and now I have 1.5.0. BIOS
I have turned off the Capsule Updates on BIOS so it won't install a new one. This motherboard did come with 1.5.4 but I downgrade it with the tech guy to 1.5.0 and still have G-sync, so lucky one.

I have tested the CPU temperatures on stock and still rocketed to 98-100º on BFV(I9 9900k). I tried some basic undervolt and have like 10º less at 4,7 ghz. I will be doing further test in the next days.

Maybe in a month or so I will try with IC Diamond since some of you had very good results.

Thanks to the people that helped me in special @Fire Tiger

Glad the change over went well and you've managed to stop Windows from pushing new BIOS updates.

What have you used to undervolt? How far have you pushed the UV?

Did the engineer use Dell paste or did you provide TIM for him to use?

I have used Throttlestop since I have some experience with that app from a previous laptop. I have -0.11 offset voltage but I did a very quick test and played for like 10 minutes or less.
I need to try different thing with different voltages yet...so don't take any of this results for anything yet

The engineer has a very bad paste with a chinese mark, I bought in a store an artic MX4 since I don't have time to wait for an IC Diamond before the tech guy came.

Maybe I will repaste in the next month or so, first I want to try with Undervolt and so on

I've been running Artic MX4 2019 and it has been fine. Maybe it's not worth the hassle of another re-paste.

Can you check the model and vendor of the display? I'm intrigued about G-Sync working properly on your device.

Ok, so just tried to game on the laptop screen)I tried before with BFV but on a external monitor. I have that flickering on the laptop screen so no luck then, is this flickering normal in that BIOS?

There is no way then to not update? I mean, you need to choose between the last bios with the FPS drop or lose G-sync on the laptop screen?

Basically if you have an Chi Mei panel you need to be on any BIOS after 1.6.x (unsure of exact revision) as that BIOS was the first to include the Chi Mei panel. If you go to a BIOS before 1.6 such as 1.5.0, to prevent the aggressive throttling, like you've done, you lose the G-Sync ability.

That's messed up then... Anyone contacted on dell about this or know if they are gonna release a new bios for this? The only solution then is not to get more than 78º(I think it was that) ?

I'm on BIOS 1.7.3 and vBIOS 180w and have Asus GPU tweak lifting the GPU limit to 80c.

Yesterday I did some playing with Unigine (no idea how 'real-life' it is) but found that with the 180 vBIOS I never saw the aggressive throttling where the clock speeds hit 500mhz or less and hit FPS of 30-60. Clocks dropped to around 1500mhz.

I switched over to vBIOS 200w and ran the same tests, one on performance fans, then on max fans, the same tests with vBIOS 180w. Using the 200w vBIOS as soon as the GPU temp hit 79c the clocks dropped to 500mhz and FPS also dramatically dropped where they both remained until the GPU hit 50c.

No idea how this would fair for you with a 9900k but for me its working so far. I have no doubt next year when the likes of Cyberpunk is released I'll need to make the decision on whether to roll back and lose G-Sync or potentially throttle a lot more than I do now.

Any new BIOS they release is likely to keep the current 75c limit, which was put in place due to the amount of 2080's we saw dying out in the first few months. That's only my opinion obviously.

I think I Will stick to this BIOS for the moment at least until we have any news on this...

I have contacted Alienware support on Twitter about this, let's see if they told me anything. It's a shame they are promoting the 2080 install pack for the laptop and we can't really use it.

Now I lose G-sync in the laptop screen for which I paid 100€ more in the laptop configuration

Gsync isnt really needed on a 1080p panel with a 2080. Doubt there are many if any games that cant reach 144hz or close at such a low resolution with a 2080.

I Play a lot of Battlefield V and if you have all set to ultra it's normal to fluctuate between 80-120 fps... I know it's not a death or life matter but it bothers me a lot because I paid for this, so if I had the last bios I will need to deal with the fps going down all the time?

It's a shame for Dell and Alienware

They do not control what and when panels get added to the Green Goblin's G-Stink club. They would have to go back and add G-Stink support to an old BIOS that they intentionally changed to introduce throttling nonsense to in later versions, so don't even ask. They don't want people using the older BIOS that works better. Their solution was the introduction of inferior firmware.

I asked this in the other thread but whilst we're on the subject I'll ask it here as well...

Can you set a sort of global setting to limit FPS to 144? Is there any benefit to not setting this and allowing the GPU to push out 144+ even though the screen can't show it?

If you were to set a 'global setting' limiting everything to 144 FPS, would there be a benefit in terms of reducing heat?

Apologies if this is a real noob type question, I'm still learning this game.

Same here and I have never experienced any throttling or FPS drops, even hours into gaming. Maybe I am just not pushing it hard enough, IDK.

I rolled back to 1.5.0 just to test and saw maybe a 2% difference? Not enough that I warranted staying on the older bios. I don't really care about topping the benchmark charts so I opted for the newer BIOS. With the FPS this thing is pushing on games I play I don't really care about the miniscule difference I lose going to 1.7.3.

what games were you playing? i don't care about benchmarks either, but on titanfall 2 and metro exodus i for sure had the fps drops. it was enough to make the game choppy for like 5 seconds at at time.

i just did what some people said worked on here and set the GPU thermal limit to 78 on my GPU overclock and the noticeable FPS drops went away. if i don't notice any FPS drops on Metro Exodus with ray tracing on high and graphics on ultra then i'm fine with 1.7.3 too. since my A51m is a first batch A51m i'd rather use the "safer" bios as long as my gaming experience is still great.

I have been testing some games with -125 umdervolt and it seems stable so far at 4'6 or 4'7ghz. I'm setting it at 4'6 GHz and having between 80-87°max on BFV ultra at WQHD

Other games like overwatch, Warhammer or battlefront runs a lot cooler. Having like 50-60 in overwatch and Warhammer. Battlefront 70-80.

So far I'm happy...I just want to tweak a few more things. What's the best thermal paste recommended here? IC Diamond? Phobya nanogrease?

I have Grizzly Krionaut LM too but for the moment I want to stick with "normal" pastes

ARK, WoW Classic, Star Wars:Fallen Order and Overwatch mostly. I have no Ray Tracing options available so I can't test that.

Don't put LM on is you don't know what your doing, I'm tempted to put it on gpu but I'm right at 80c so I feel okay, just got an 8700k Ima test later so I feel that will bring Temps down some. If you use LM I would advise it only on the cpu delided.
