Yeah, I have use LM before but as I say I'm trying to avoid it for the moment and want to try a non liquid metal paste before. Any advise?

I ordered Phobya Nanogrease in case my heatsink isn't perfect. PN will hopefully be thick enough to handle any imperfections and also have a better conductivity rating in comparison to the standard Dell paste.
Need to let us know how you find that in comparison to the 9700k. What paste are you planning on using on the 8700k and what do you use currently?Last edited by a moderator: Nov 28, 2019 -

All I know is with 9700k I could not sustain 5ghz on all cores without heating crap happening, im thinking I will be Able to push 8700k to 5ghz and I'll test LM later, I just got one from micro center gonna see how it does gonna try to install it tonight.

Can someone help me choose memory? There is gskill 2400mhx 64gb for $200 on Newegg and there is also a corsair vengeance 2400mhz kit both are CL16 but the corsair one is $260 so I'm really thinking I want the gskill but I don't think there will be any performance difference to go with the gskill one.

Hello,
Can someone confirm me if this is the Phobya Nanogrease you're using? It's called Hegrease, but it's the same?

Have a look at HyperX, if its available. You can get the 2666mhz version, in case we ever get this promise BIOS (highly unlikely). The HyperX will then downclock to 2400mhz at CL14.
Or go for the HyperX 2400mhz, it might be cheaper and CL14 instead of CL16, which to be honest I doubt anyone would notice the difference of anyway.
If you can only have either of the above I'd go with the cheapest. I think both are being used within this forum and no reports of issues.
HeGrease isn't the same no, I think it's supposed to be their weaker paste.
Not sure where you are from but this is the link I used to buy mine - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Phobya-Nanogrease-Extreme-3-5g/264452271029DreDre and Silverfeyn like this. -

When the A51m was released Frank Azor apparently said there would be a BIOS released to allow the memory to run at 2666mhz. Unfortunately, he's now left Alienware/Dell and it seems like this BIOS is never going to be released. Many have asked Alienware employees about it on social media but no one ever gave a proper response. I doubt we'll ever see anything other than standard BIOS updates and drivers for this version now. If there is an R2 that'll be the one to receive the faster memory and better screens, again this is my opinion and not fact. -

The freaking funny thing is mine came with 2666mhz ram... Wtf why is it limited to 2400 in the first place. 2666v

About the BIOS topic. I'm contacting Dell support explaining the Throttling information and the problem we have with the BIOS. If there is something wrong please tell me.

They're asking me for a video of the thermal throttling with latest bios. I have 1.5.0 and cannot provide this video, can someone of you record a video of this? Of the GPU throttling down when it reached 78º
Thanks -
Fire Tiger Notebook Deity
Yeah I think most of us received 2666mhz from the factory, I imagine the plan was for the machine to be able to reach 2666mhz at least but somethings went wrong and they've had to limit it to 2400mhz but possibly had hopes of resolving it at some point. -
If someone can make me a video of the thermal throttling of GPU in latest BIOS would be nice.
I think it's important for us all to at least try to move things on Dell to change or fix this.
They already acknowledge that at 80-84 degrees temperatures are fine, but we need a video so I can send them to try them to change this in future BIOS...

I'd need to re-install the 200w vBIOS and re-run some tests but not sure when I'll have time over the coming days.
What app do I use to capture onscreen video, or would I just video it using my phone or something?Silverfeyn likes this. -
I think I only need a recording of a phone camera video where you can see the temperatures and GPU clock(msi afterburner, alien command center or any other solution that shows the temps and clock) and record when it goes up to 78º and the clock speed drop to 300-500mhz
Thanks to anyone that can do this for me

Those temperatures look fine, I kind of leave it as-is.
I second that opinion.
I think we should do something together as a community to force Dell to give us a porper BIOS without stupid thermal restrictions, even if it's under signing a contract or something.

Not to sure I like this 8700k it gets crazy hot very fast in here.. Maybe because not delided yet? Not to sure.. But 4.8ghz it seems like it's relaxed and runs abit cooler than the 9700k from what it seems but I'm not sure if I need to delid or just stay with the 9700k
Sent from my GM1917 using TapatalkFire Tiger likes this. -
I have a 8086k in a small form factor Ncase M1. I have a Noctua NH-U9S with a second fan on the cooler to keep it cool. I can pretty easily get it running up to 5.1ghz on all cores but it runs hot. I turned it down to 4.8ghz and it runs around 15-20 degrees cooler. So once you get to 5.0ghz and above these chips just need alot more voltage and produce alot of heat. So hitting 4.8ghz is a good sweet spot.
While the difference between 5.1 and 4.8 was noticable in synthetic benchmarks it wasn't in gaming. Maybe 1-2 fps. So I wouldn't be too worried about going much higher than that since the return isn't much worth it.DreDre likes this. -

¡Ahí va!
I flashed the 200W BIOS because with the 180W BIOS is somewhat more difficult to trigger the Thermal power down state. However, even after all my setting up, I still sometimes get the Thermal throttle and it ruins my COD matches. Really wish this stupid limit was removed and be able to use G-Sync.
Also, first second of the Benchmark is dedicated to @Fire Tiger , who REALLY wanted to see an RTX2080 do 2100MHz

I think per clock the 9700K is a bit faster. Nothing you’d ever notice without an FPS counter. So it’s kind of a wash. I think either one is a good fit for the machine for gaming.Fire Tiger likes this.

Only Dell higher up/tech engineers sit with the RMA numbers. And you won’t be allowed to see them. This determines what they will put into firmware.
The engineers will do everything to avoid something like this...

Twitter support advised me to download latest BIOS and vBIOS, I've explained that the machine left the factory in January 2019 with 190w and a GPU limit of 87c why are we now being limited compared to 'as per design'? -
We need to be sure they understand it's a design problem they have and they need to fix the BIOS...

I'm a bad person, I loled at this too much.
This situation with the BIOS brings me back to my MSI GTX 680 Lightning days. This was the first videocard that made unrestricted power and voltage adjustment a big deal. nVidia responded by imposing a voltage limit via vBIOS, but I was lucky to have one of the unrestricted first ones (of course à BIOS flash could get you around this). Unfortunately the voltage ban was also imposed on MSI Afterburner, but hacking could get you away from the limits.
There were special editions of MSI Afterburner that would let you go beyond the maximum voltage, but those were for people with the trust of MSI. Guess Dell could do something similar for the A51m R1.
Enviado desde mi GM1913 mediante TapatalkPapusan and Fire Tiger like this. -
As you can see from the post below you can see exactly same pattern. This is how it works... Get feedback on flaws from RMA department, then fix it the cheapest way. Re-call all affected machines for proper fix is too expensive.
Alienware and XPS is under the same Dell umbrella. And it's in short the same engineers who works with the XPS line. And they will for sure offer exactly same solutions.
Last edited: Nov 28, 2019 -
"Throttle it" is always the Dell gimp-o-rama solution. That's easier and cheaper than making it work right. They might say they are aware of the problem and looking at solutions, but they are just stalling and buying more time for the product to become EOL, then they have a new product and wash their hands with the old one. After all, it is EOL and they have something better newer to sell. Hurry. You'll want to be one of the first guinea pigs to have one. And, it has the same issues. Maybe even a new one. But, that's OK. They are aware of it and looking at possible solutions. Lather, rinse, repeat.

We will see. But nothing happened when different owners asked on twitter and Facepalm if Dell could add full power usage from a single 330w psu
, asked for
memory support that minimum follow Intel's specs, more panel options and same as you now try... Push out new firmware that will fix the crippled power limits for GPU. And a bit over next months then it's a year since the
Press release.
For the records. Dell have also stopped add in links for firmware, drivers and software. You have to rely on Dell's main download page. If Dell remove published firmware etc later from main page then you won't find it.Last edited: Nov 29, 2019Fire Tiger likes this. -
