I just wanted to comment on how resourceful this thread is for just about everyone! It contains a great wealth of knowledge regarding all types of bags for our notebooks.

I have found myself referring this thread to others, and I myself...coming back for more info per se!

    Kudos!

    Thanks for the great list!

One great sleeve I don't see in your original post (although someone may have added it, I haven't had time to read the whole thread), is the Zeroshock sleeve by Shinza. ( www.shinza.com)

Another nice sleeve is the E-Wrap by sporting goods retailer REI, which comes in about 4 sizes. You can see it at www.rei.com, search e-wrap, or if you live near an REI store, look in person.

Definitely check out Tom Bihn. Their bags are high quality (pricey with add-ons) and since you don't have one of the new macbook pros (like me) you have a lot to choose from. Plus their 'brain cell' is an outstanding idea and will give far more support than a regular (thin) case. The bag I want from TB (Zephyer) doesn't hold the 4z size brain cell that my MBP requires -- otherwise I would have bought a TB bag!

    Good luck!!

Here is the 2XL Horizontal Brain Cell. I was pleasantly surprised by the snug fit and hard sides protecting my laptop. Finally, something that fits like a glove rather than just a make do solution! Here are some pics:

It wasn't designed "specifically" for the HDX18, but it's by far the best I have seen either online or in a store. In speaking with Tom, he mentioned that he got six emails asking about a bag for the HDX18 this weekend alone, so hopefully he (and other companies) will start considering our size laptops when making new products.

Here is the link for the Tom Bihn Horizontal Brain Cell. The size choice for the HDX18 is 2XL.

    Alright so I just purchased a SR290.

I was wondering what size laptop bags do you guys use? Do you have it fitted? Or do you guys have one size bigger...

I purchased a Tucano Stile Workout bag...I have both the 13" and the 15.4" one.

The problem is on the 13" it is really tight and I'm afraid of scratching the corners of my laptop (already happened with the Sony 13.3" neoprene). The 15.4" on the other hand fits nicely, but it slides around a wee bit...which one should I stick with?

    Thanks a lot .

Am currently looking for a new bag for a macbook pro 17" currently on its way to me. I'm leaning towards Booq as I had one of those before. Great looking and well made. Thought I would add another company to the list which I'm considering and haven't seen mentioned. Freitag Their bags are nice and one of a kinds, but their prices have gotten somewhat unreasonable in recent years.

Also in response to an earlier question about Timbuk2 bags, I liked the Timbuk2 messenger bag that I had. Good quality. Maybe lacked a few pockets, but overall very nice.

    Nice thread btw.

Finally I found the right backpack for my HDX18.

It is Targus backpack made for DELL. There is no DELL logo on it by it is sold via DELL store.

It says 17" laptops but dimensions were close so I decided to try it.

When I tried to fit laptop first time it didn't work...it was sticking out about 1" and I couldn't close it...

but I found out that Targus is using special padding for bottom part....

....which is removable obviously. Once padding is out of the way, everything works fine...

well almost everything.... fitment is tight.... not too tight but I'm not sure if you will be able to use neoprene sleeve and then slide it in. I use original cloth sleeve which work fine and even after removal of special bottom padding, there is thick padding / wall in the bottom to protect your laptop anyway.

This is how it looks closed with laptop inside...

There are few things I like about this backpack. First... it is relatively not ugly comapring to all those spiderman, sci-fi looking geek bags. I don't even mind those blue accents.
Secondly... there is enough of storage and usable functions like extra comfortable handle, phone/mp3 player compartment with headphones opening, headphones cable lock on shoulder belt etc etc.....

    ...or mouse, cable storage....

...and overall quality is very nice too.

I wish I could have more space to use extra neoprene sleeve , but again, $89 shipped overnight (after discount) is good price for good quality bag.

I just received the Booq Vyper exo XL and I thought since I haven't found many reviews on it that I would provide one here. This bag is specifically made for 17" Macbook Pros, though I can imagine it could accommodate other 15" and slim 17" laptops. It was purchased directly from Booq for $149.00.

    Quality and Materials -
The materials used in this bag are all of a higher quality than the last Booqbag that I owned, which is to say they appear to be excellent. The outer shell itself, made of semi-rigid ballistic nylon and reinforced with layers of molded foam, is stiffer and more resilient than I thought it would be. Seams are generally well made and without doubt very strong. Zippers and velcro are also strong and high quality.

Its a bit smaller than I expected it would be, which I'm happy about. It measures a few extra centimeters in length and depth than the 17" Mbp.

The strap appears to be the same type of nylon used in seat belts and the buckles and clasps have a nice weight and solidity to them. The spring on the clasp is easy to depress and makes removing the strap from any position very easy. The strap with the pad is very comfortable to wear.

The handles are thick and soft which provide a comfortable and sure grip.

The bottom, which isn't illustrated anywhere that I've seen, is a strip of perforated leather (pleather?). Its quite nice, but it does not allow the bag to stand on its own. You'll either always have to lie it on its side or lean it up against something.

A nice thick velcro strap holds the laptop in place in the laptop compartment (it'll even keep it in place if you open the bag and hold it upside down. The compartment itself has some type of felt material on the back which is fairly rigid. The material on the front of the compartment seems to be a padded neoprene which is stretchy. There is a very narrow pocket on the front of the compartment for papers, passports, phones, etc. The laptop sits snug in the compartment.

    With the laptop inserted.

On the opposite side of the bag are two narrow zippered nylon pockets fronted by two stretchy neoprene sleeves, and three pen holders.

There are also two larger nylon pockets, one of which is zippered.

    Capacity-
I wasn't looking for a huge bag considering I already have to carry a 17" laptop. I basically needed a bag for travel that could accommodate a bare minimum of required items. The capacity of the bag was actually somewhat surprising.

I was able to fit everything you see in this pic, which for me is more than enough. Included were: the laptop, a cd, passports, ipod, usb mouse, mouse pad, usb, firewire and power cable, power brick, in-ear headphone case, eyeglass case, phone, 2 magazines, a medium sized book, and a bottle of coke.

Definitely a tight fit, but it wasn't difficult to close or anything and I probably could have included more. One of the primary reasons I bought this Mbp instead of another Sager was so I wouldn't have to lug around 15+ pounds.

    Conclusion-
This bag is definitely recommended. Its the right size for a thin 17" laptop if you don't have to also carry around loads of peripherals. It seems strong and the semi-rigid exterior gives a definite sense of added security. Also, while mentioning security, each bag has a small metal plaque with a unique serial number which can be registered, so if you misplace the bag someone (a kind someone) who finds it can get your bag back to you very easily.

There is one thing which slightly irritates me, though I'm not sure if its because of the way it was transported to me (my uncle had it in his luggage) and that is the fact that the two sides when zippered closed do not match up exactly. You can see what I mean in the picture of the handles above. This may be the way its built, but more likely I think it just got a little deformed in the luggage and I imagine it will probably return to its intended form eventually.

    Pros:
    great construction and materials
    solid protection
    comfortable handles and strap
    nice design
    possible to register the bag

    Cons:
not a huge amount of space
can't stand on its own (I'm ambivalent about this one)
possible build defect where the sides don't match up perfectly (verdict still out)
    pretty expensive

Hope this review helps some to make their bag purchasing decisions.

Oh, by the way this bag can also be purchased in a size made for the 15" variety of MBPs

With the change in notebooks to 15.6", it's becoming frustrating to find one that fits my Inspiron 1545 and is waterproof. Why is it that so many of these sites simply do not have the dimensions of the laptop compartment as well. Instead I find myself using reviews to find out what laptops fit, then finding the dimensions of those and see if my laptop will fit.

Curse you Dell for making this notebook half an inch too big for my existing swissgear back!!!!

Let's hope the new one I ordered will be ok. When I get it I will let you all know.

    What he said.

Just bought a 1545 and had some cases picked out on-line when it occured to me that they were all 15.4 but this laptop screensize is 15.6.

To be safe I will assume that I can't use a 15.4 case (but if anyone knows of any that can fit 15.6 laptops please let me know)!!!

I just bought a Lenovo T400s. I was wondering if someone could throw me some suggestions for backpacks. I need something that isn't big and clunky, small and steamlined. I travel fairly light so mainly I am just looking for something that looks good and isn't enormous.

I've been looking around but I can only really find high volume packs or smaller packs that are really square and bulky looking.

I need a briefcase for my new laptop. I want something hard, that will carry the notebook, charger, and mouse. Heres the catch, my notebook has a 18.4" screen. So that means the internal dimensions need to be something like 14" x 22".

Something like this would be great, I would prefer a metal look, but anything that is hard will be acceptable.

Kinda late but here are the images for the incase messenger bag. Everything you see in it is what I carry on a daily basis. I would have my laptop in there but I didn't feel like unplugging it to stuff it in to show you guys, same goes for my 3.5" 1tb external.

Very amazing bag overall. It can easily be operated with one hand, as far as putting it on and tightening it up. The bag is super strong, and some days I don't even use the squeeze latches if im in a hurry because the front velcro in the front is more than enough.

I put the flash on to show the reflectivity.

Overall huge bag, people tell me so and then they ask me how much it cost and naturally they scoff, but i just tell them to suck it and that it doubles as an emergency boat since its amazingly waterproof.

Oh I should also mention, with these books on my back the bag starts to get uncomfortable after about an hour of walking around but can easily be switched to hanging over one shoulder (as opposed to across my chest) without much issue.

    @altoid!
Those are nice pics you provided!
And, wowsa! The bag truly does hold a lot of "stuff" :p :D
I like messenger bags, I have a few + my backpack.
I've never tried the Incase brand, looks like I may have to think about that brand sometime, now! ;)

I could definitely hold more stuff in it, the strap is made from seat belt material, I'm not worried about throwing this bag around, its incredibly well built, although I have only had it for 2.5 weeks, if this bag doesn't last forever I'll be upset. When the weather gets better I'm going to try it out on my bike and see how well it handles bumpy terrain.

Nice and durable is all that matters (well looks also) ;)

I would enjoy hearing some feedback on how it works out for you on your bike!!

I am wanting to try my new Belkin Messenger on my bike..(but my lappy is going back for a replacement, so I don't think it's a good idea til I receive my new one).. :( And, the weather has been so darn nice outdoors..and will be for the next week = Bike weather. :D

the weather just got amazing here so maybe this weekend or next, I'm interested in trying the side strap, all messenger bags i've used thus far always fall to my side when I bike, no matter how tight i have them to my body. Maybe i don't get around much but the incase bag is the first bag that has a strap specifically to keep the bag from rotating around and i'm curious to find out if that optional strap will dig into my side or not.

How's the strap on the belkin? it looks enormous.

My last bag came with a side strap, I have never used it for cycling (dont have a bike lol) purposes but for carrying heavy loads it definitely helps against the bag swinging about. I actually found it more comfortable with the side strap as it distributed the weight alittle.
