That's not true. I've already tested MPC-HC with the mhd4500 (acer1410 & 4810) and I can playback 720p x264 mkvs at less than 10% cpu utilization. the whole reason I went with this chipset was because of the h.264 acceleration! Maybe there's some caveats with too high a bitrate or profile, and certainly a limitation on Reference frames, but def. check your config.

Hi, maybe you're right, maybe there is a problem with my "default" cfg. graphics drivers, etc. But in the interim I found a work around ( with the help of a few nice members :)) by using this so called Haali Splitter app and following the installation directions from this website. Now I have <20% CPU utilization when running that mkv test video, good framerates, even audio! The only thing missing from wmp12 is the subtitles, but I can live with that... for now :p

p.s. Plz try that test video in RoninTech's post above and let us know if you still manage <10%... would be of genuine interest, thanks!

i figured most everybody uses haali splitter. been using it for years. which splitter was choking for ya? i would drop wmp12 like a bad habit (At least for vid, but I like wmp for audio library),and keep with mpc-hc, and i would recommend zoom player, which I love, but I don't think it has dxva... on main rig this is irrelevant since I have nothing but mpeg2 dxva (ota) anyway.

Any opinions on whats better: Installing bluetooth into a 1410 or just buying one of these USB Bluetooth micro adapters?

Is the install easy or pretty sketchy? I've read the guides, but the lack of pictures is not helping much. Any issues with the Broadcom module and drivers?

    @end:
I want an internal BT but I've read of quite large power draw from some people, haven't really heard anything specific on the usb BT power draw. I mostly would like to have the internal BT to use with a BT mouse just to free up a usb port. I need to find out the difference between a BT & a regular wireless mouse and how dependent the draw is on the brand/model of the BT card. And most of all I want an all in one card(wifi/BT) to just replace the existing wifi card, just to not have to do more than remove the access door to do it.

@lite2: You know what I just ended up buying $10 iphone app called MyWi that creates a wifi network for tethering. This is what I needed the bluetooth for anyway and its a much cleaner and also cheaper solution.

I've bought two internal BT adapters and a little BT dongle. The (cheap like $3) little BT dongle works the best but it is, alas, external even though it is just a little bump in a USB port. I use for syncing, Skype and for ADCP headphones. Works great. The second internal card I bought is BT 2.1-- it is installed and works fine also. Just doesn't have the range of the external dongle but it is cool to have it built-in. Range is about 15 feet assuming no walls.

The first card I bought and installed was a BT 2.0 card. Worked OK but had the range of a beetle (like 3 feet before it started cutting out).

Bottom line, I keep the dongle in my carrying case but just use the installed 2.1 card. Doesn't seem to bother battery life much.

    Well almost everybody :p
Unfortunately as I said earlier, I can't view the subtitles with WMP12 and with that fellow's anime test 1080 mkv, I don't even get sound...

A shame, really, 'cause the framerate and CPU% are excellent :D Any ideas...? Can you play that anime with subtitles & sound?

I can play both vids flawlessly with MPC-HC with subs & sound (I have the slower SU2300) . The only vids I have problems with are vids like the Wipeout-HD 1920x1080 60fps trailer (drops less frames with WMP12), and AVCHD 1920x1080 60i vids at 21-24Mbps (cant play on MPC-HC at all). Have you tried re-installing MPC-HC, and uninstalling any codec packs like ffmpeg / divx? I dont know what the problem is, but I hope you can find a cure.

    Cool!
I don't have ffmpeg, but I do have DivX... :-/ What OS are you working with, XP, Vista, 7? x86 or x64? What graphics driver ver do you have installed?

    Thanks for your feedback :)

I'm running AS1410(SU2300) on v1.3303 bios, Win7 x64, the latest Intel driver 8.15.10.2021 (it also worked with the one before it, the first version that supported flash acc),and MPC-HC v1.3.1249.0 x64. I havent installed any extra codec packs.

One thing that must be checked, especially on battery is to set in both the graphic driver option & power setting option to max performance (in the option settings for power settings, there is a setting for multimedia / video playback).

I currently have a different problem; flash player 10.1 beta2 not working correctly (cpu usage is 40-50% but only plays 10fps); but it must be due to flash 10.1 beta2 or the new intel driver since when I tested it with flash10.1beta1 and the older driver I did at times get acc. the vid i tested was the yurikamome hd 1080p vid on youtube.

Just upgraded to that same 4GB DDR2 800 memory kit, and an Intel X25-V, bit pricey considering the upgrades are 1/2 the price of my 1410 but its soooo much better now, no more lags!

I would truly love to get an SSD but for me cost & size matters more than speed. I have mine setup to sync with the storage HD in my "main" pc so I have anything that I have at home with me when i'm out, plus it makes for a good backup. out of the 640gb I only have like 60gb free as it is, so i'm waiting on a 9.5mm 750/1000gb drive to hit.

Has anyone tried using the core avc codec? I'm using core avc for years now, also with mpc, no stuttering oder async audio. cpu utilization below 3% on my quadcore and below 9% on my old hp dv5 notebook.

could be an alternative for you guys where all other codecs won't work well.

using 4gb drr2 800, for the record. when ssd's become effordable, I'm going to get one, about 40-80gb.

Thx for the feedback & useful info! I'm having the trouble in AC (Mains) mode, but I will check - you never know... plus my graphics (/chipset) drivers are originals (1855s) so maybe it's high time I update them... I just haven't done so as Acer's website hasn't offered anything newer (at least not for the 1810TZ/SU4100)...

Not my experience - that Core AVC thing sucked and it cost money. I was mad.

Media Player Classic is free and does hardware decoding - works like a charm. Simple choice IMO. That's what I'm using on my 1810TZ right now.

CoreAVC used to be the fastest playback option until MPC-HC came out, which has a faster internal decoder than CoreAVC and gives you DXVA.

Good to hear it! What OS / driver version are you using? Do you use Haali too? How did you get MPC to use HW (DXVA) - via Microsoft's DTV-DVD decoder or did you do the registry hack?

MPC-HC will use dxva by default, if its not working for you, try the svn build from here:

    http://www.xvidvideo.ru/media-player-classic-home-cinema-x86-x64/

To get DXVA working in Win7 the render has to be EVR.

I personally use potplayer with MS DTV-DVD decoder, MPC-HC is easy to setup but features/options are limited. Regarding CoreAVC, it's still the most efficient *software* decoder and not too shabby in terms of cpu usage with NVidia/CUDA -- just not for this Acer machine.

same question, where to activate/check it? or does mpc use it by default?
never used it before. maybe I'll check this on my desktop pc.

btw, core avc uses cuda for hw accleration. if you got an ati card, it wont probably run as smooth as on nvidias.

other question: can anyone tell me step by step how to do the fan mod with light duct tape? dunno which parts have to be taken off.

    Hello,

I'm using the 1810TZ for 2 weeks now and I've charged it 5 times. After the first time Batterybar and RMClock says that the wear of the battery was 3,9%. Now, 4 charges later, Batterybar and RMClock says 11,4% wear. I think that is a lot.
I've tested the battery also by myself. I had charged it and the only thing I did was watching movies on youtube with WIFI on, balanced profile and non-HD movies. I got 3 and half ours. That don't looks a lot. What could it be? I have all the five times stopped working on the 1810TZ when the computer shutted down himself because the battery was empty.

And I have another question. I want to reïnstall Windows 7 because I think Batterybar damaged the windows-indicator of the battery. But I haven't got a recoverydisk with the 1810TZ. Can I download a Windows 7 Home Premium DVD and use the key below the 1810TZ? And does it matter which Windows 7 Home Premium I use if it is possible?

mPCie SSD mod to create a SSD+HDD setup?

The Intel ICH9M I/O controller on a 1410/1810T has 4 sata controllers on it, with only 1 used by the primary HDD. Has anyone tried seeing if there are solderable vias on the systemboard that could be tapped to attach a netbook-style mPCIe SSD, eg: Runcore ProIV mPCIe SSD (Indilinx)? Might need to swap sata I/O lines with the primary HDD for the bios to boot from it. Accessing BGA Pins can help identify the vias. 2510P article can help with more theory if needed. Any pioneers willing to go snooping?

Well, not for me it isn't :-/ According to this site, there seems to be some kind of DXVA "compatibility" standards for videos:

"This will allow G45 owners to play H.264 videos that do not conform to DXVA standards. It will not be always successful, but I estimate that at least 90% of those out-of-spec H.264 videos should be playable with G45 GPU + the registry modification above. The Quantum of Solace trailer, AIR OP theme and Planet Earth sample should work though, at least with my own tests with an Acer laptop with G45 GPU + Windows Vista OS."

I'm using "stable" 1.3.1249.0 from Sourceforge but I tried your suggested version as well, however thewre was no improvement. Actually, this version prevents the registry hack from working so DXVA is not enabled, period.

In my case (read: W7 x64), it doesn't use it by default, however I had two options. The first (& easiest) is to use external filter "Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder". The second is to add the following registry entry (assuming you're working with v. 1249):

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Gabest\Filters\MPC Video Decoder]
    "CompatibilityMode"=dword:00000016

Both these options have been explored in this NBR Acer thread.

You'll know if MPC is using DXVA as it will display "Playing [DXVA]" in the status row way at the bottom (make sure "status" is checked in the view tab).

*EDIT* Actually, there's an easier way to achieve the above. Uncheck internal filters H264/AVC (FFmpeg) to force MPC to use DXVA & uncheck H264/AVC (DXVA)as well to use an external decoder (which in my case is the Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder - but that may vary depending on what Media SW one has installed...

My drivers are in order as WMP 12 uses DXVA and works like a charm, except it doesn't display subtitles... :-/

I think it depends on the sample file. For example, I tested these two with MPC-HC svn build, no registry tweaking.

    Ducks.Take.Off.720p.QHD.CRF25.x264-CtrlHD
    Ducks.Take.Off.1080p.QHD.CRF25.x264-CtrlHD

MPC-HC can use DXVA on 720P but not 1080P, while the MS DTV-DVD decoder have DXVA on both. I would agree that using the MS decoder is the easiest way, especially with another player but still, MPC-HC works on lots of files, just not all.

I searched around a bit and thought posting was a little easier than reading through 84 pages of this thread.

I read that Acer released a 9 cell battery for the 1410 that promised 12 hours of life but I can't find it anywhere. Is it available somewhere and I just can't find it? I see numerous 8 cell 4200 mAh batteries and a 6 cell 5200 mAh option from cheap laptop batteries.com, which is the better option for maximum battery life?

I had the Gateway LT3100 before(visual twin to 1410/1810 with lesser specs & larger appetite) and its 6 cell battery stuck out the rear about an inch. I hated it, now if they can manage to squeeze that power into the original size I'll play, but not until.

That's what I was wondering. I looked EVERYWHERE for this thing (internationally), and couldn't find it. Heck, I had a hard time even finding the higher-capacity 6-cell for the 1410! I'd buy a bigger battery for mine even if it did protrude a bit, but they're nowhere to be found. SIGH...

I intalled internal bluetooth module yesterday as instructed from here. it works great, and connected to my phone, mouse. however, i found that the bluetooth LED indicator keeps blinking and blinks fast. it is kind of annoying expecially at night.
is it normal? or is there any way to get it solid on when connected? at lease not blink so fast?
I spent several hours searching this forum, and found a few other guys asked same question but no one answered.

How did you install the module? Did you just take the bottom covers off? Or did you take the keyboard off too?

I followed the intrstuction on the first page, and took everything apart. actually it was easier than i thought. most tricky part was the keyboard. now i know that use a plastic small flat screwdriver or similar and push back the four tab on top side, then top side of keyboard will pop up, and the rest is easy.

It would have a mPCIe slot for the wifi card. Remove the wifi card and can install the DIY ViDock's PM3N to allow attachment of external desktop video cards. That's how I have a HD4670 working with my 2510P.

I have a couple of quick questions.

I purchased a 1410-2497 that has the celeron 743, I am going to return for a 1410-2801 with a dual core SU2300(I haven't opened it yet) The biggest demand will be high-def video. So I am assuming that the 1.2 Ghz dual core will be faster over all than the 1.3 single core. Am I corect in this?

Secondly, would I be better off upgrading to 4 GB ram rather than going to an SSD drive? Has anyone looked into the trade of between the 2?

    Thanks

I have installed the bluetooth module also and never noticed the blinking until your post! Mine does blink whether it has connected or not. A rather fast blink. But, it isn't very bright...the wireless light and the power light are definitely brighter (but they don't blink). Guess that is why I hadn't noticed.

I would guess (given our sample of 2) that is normal behavior.
