for those wondering which version to download, here's a good place to start.
    http://tinyurl.com/ya6hyf7

*disclamer* you should only download this if for some freakish reason your Win 7 ultimate retail install dvd "broke". (There, I've covered my own ***, lol)

Thanks VOTEX, I forgot about interfaces within this machine and got clouded by the Windows Experience Index numbers.

Les, Thanks also for your willingness to assist and thanks for the welcome. I appreciate both the assistance and the willingness to do so.

Just trying to point out that its the mods job to point out any irregularities and, that of which you spoke has been addressed without difficulty many times.

With respect to ssds, yes it will do your system a great deal of good even if you elect to go with one that does not support TRIM. I use an ole Sammy 64Gb in my system and the difference is still amazing...

An X-25M G2 is overkill, I would know, I have one and it benches slower in this notebook than my desktop.

That said, it's still faster than say an OCZ Vertex, but it's just a matter of how much you want to spend. 60GB Agility drives were on sale at Newegg for $130 which would be a perfect buy IMO, and it has TRIM, but they're out of stock now.

    How much slower?

I think I am going to get one of the new 60GB Corsair Reactor drives CSSD-R60GB2-BRKT. http://forums.legitreviews.com/about25708.html .

Apparently it has an Indilinx controller. They do not have it on the Corsair site yet but Frys just got them in stock at the stores only. Going there in the morning to pick one up. It also has a USB 2.0 port on it & 128MB Cache. Other than fast startup and application(MS Office) load times, I want to be able to load hi-def movies for travel and not have the Hard Drive susceptible to movement. So..60GB should be more than enough.

I think 720P on a 11.6" screen should be more than adequate. I tried 1080P and it ran without a hitch on the HDD and I could not tell the difference between the two. The high density of the pixels on this screen is fantastic. I am so impressed with this little ACER over my Lenovo S10. I think 1366*768 is perfect for a "netbook", 1024*600 was a joke I fell for but the Lenovo was a nice machine other than the resolution.

Those from newegg went fast. I heard about them the same day and they were gone when I looked!!!

with the X-25M G2 80 Gb on an 1810TZ out of the i got out of the box
    100Mb seq - 249.0 / 87.29
    512k - 183.4 / 86.80
    4k - 16.33 / 35.51

Compared to a desktop system this review it is the same for large files.

It is slower for 4k only: 16 vs. 24 and 35 vs. 68.
So your 4k reads will be 2/3, 4k writes 1/2 of the desktop performance.
Still, in everyday use you will rarely notice.

Looking for some ram to upgrade my 1410 su2300 from 2 to 4GB. Cheapest ram kit with good ratings I've found on Newegg is this..

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231156

Will this work with the 1410? I guess my only question is if there would be a problem with the ram timings/compatibility. It says these are DDR2 800 (PC2 6400), with the 5-5-5-15 timing. Thanks!

no that's not what i was asking and answering the question has nothing to do with what copy of win 7 the user is running. cracked or not. i just don't understand what the difference is.

my 1810 has a copy of win7 home premium but if i follow that guide i can just as easily give myself a free upgrade to ultimate.

or i can acquire a copy of ultimate from the internet and install ultimate.

ether way the machine with a license for home prem is running ultimate.

im using home premium x64 and very happy and dont feel the netbook needs ultimate, i was just curious what the difference is between the two avenues of installing windows.

That will probably work just fine, although I can't say for sure. I can say for sure that I have two 2GB modules (Kingston KVR667D2S5/2G) and they work great. Might be cheaper, too.

i added 2Gb of Corsair VS4GBKIT800D2 5-5-5-18 and they work fine with the pre-installed Elpida RAM. PC Wizard says the Elpida goes 5-6-6-18 en the Corsair goes 5-5-5-18. By default they operate in DDR-2 800 dual channel mode, according to PC Wizard at 5-6-6-18.

Anyone else know if the ram I mentioned in my original post will work?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231156

I want to be sure before spending $80. I could not find the Corsair (2x 2GB) you mentioned for under $100. Did you get it on sale? Keep in mind my model is the newer su2300 with both ram slots filled with 1GB, So I will need to get a dual channel, 2x2GB 800mhz kit. Thanks again

I just got 1x2Gb, which here in Europe is about €40 when ordered online. Alas i can't tell for the kit you're looking at, but wouldn't know why a kit of exact same parts shouldn't work either.

On another note, I will say I had my first experience with the HDMI out playing a 720p video the other night. Was running kind of choppy on the LCD TV with both notebook and TV display playing at the same time, but after I was able to turn the 1410 display off so only the TV was playing, the movie played great without a hitch on VLC. I was also able to get WOW playing at an avg of around 21fps, with a low of 15fps in cities, and a high of 40fps when away from cities in the country side with all settings on low at the notebooks native 1366x768. Setting the rez lower probably saves a few frames, but the difference seemed negligable. I have yet to try a dungeon, but generally speaking it is playable for soloing.

    Desktop w/Rainmeter :p

When I read that thread, I had a feeling that it could have to do with the 1986 intel GMA drivers.

the flicker problem is definitely a driver-related one. as intel had some issues with programming for their gma hd-series, the screen flicker mostly occurs on the 4500HD chip.
I recommend to update to the newest available drivers (I prefer the one on the intel homepage, not the one on acers support page), this will fix the problem.

the latest versions for win 7:
    15.16.5.2021 12/18/2009 x64
    15.16.5.2021 12/18/2009 x86

I believe we should have the OP updated with the 2021 drivers. That's what I'm using right now and I haven't had any flickering problems.

when I installed the 2021 drivers on my 1810T OE, i started to get the vertical lines on my screen occasionally. I'd have to keep toggling different resolutions to get rid of it. I have stuck with the version that was on the driver disk I burnt through erecovery, and haven't had that problem since.

btw... would there any reason not to upgrade to the latest BIOS posted on the acer website for my notebook?

I don't know if it's related to the above, but when I allowed my 1810TZ w/2021 drivers to go into "auto" hibernation (due to low battery status), upon restart, the screen was partially obstructed by greyish flickering graphics (essentially scribble, lol). It went away after a "fresh" reboot. Otherwise, no problems enountered so far in all other states (std. start-ups, resuming after sleep or hibernation, etc.).

I hate to be a noob about this, but what graphics solution(s) exactly are these drivers for? Are they Beta? If I do a straightforward check on Intel's download site I still come back to the 15.16. 5.2021 release for:

    * Intel(R) G45 Express Chipset
    ...
    * Mobile Intel(R) GM45 Express Chipset
    * Mobile Intel(R) GS45 Express Chipset

    EDIT:
"Installs the video graphics driver version 15.16.8.64.2057 for Intel® Desktop Boards with Intel® HD Graphics."
Ok... so how long have you all been using drivers for this platform with your Notebooks?

I tried the v. 2021 driver before, but thought I could give it one more shot. The flicker is still there. I should clarify, though: I don't have a fuzzy screen, my pixels are not jumping. What I have is oscillating brightness, which is especially visible at lower brightness setting. Interestingly, the flicker is gone in a live Linux Mint session (native resolution @ 60Hz).

In addition, I am unable to run the Acer ePower utility. The service is running, but when I try to run the main panel of the utility, it shows up in the task manager, but nothing on the screen.

Another piece of info: the machine initially came with Vista (no flicker occured there), I did the manufacturer-supported upgrade to Win7, that's when the problems started.

    Any ideas?

I have the same issue if I am using the laptop plugged in. Put it to sleep then upplug the mains and start it back up. To fix I just have to plug it back into mains for a few seconds then I can unplug the mains and it is fine. (a reboot also fixes it)
I take it to be a driver issue that will be sorted at some point so am not too worried about it.

well, I had the problem with the flickering screen on the drivers that came with mit home premium (dunno which version). After I installed win 7 ultimate and the 2021 drivers, the flickering problem was gone.

I'm quite ertain that it is driver-related, because friends of mine also fixed it with installing never versions. I have to add that all of them are using a x64 os. maybe thats the point.

i think the 16 is the windows version, the 5 or 8 stands for the chipset version and the 2057 is the driver version.

but intels driver are a bit unified so they are near the same for a range of chisets....

Hey Les, I spent last night reinstalling WIN 7 on the new 60GB Reactor SSD from Corsair. (Model CSSD-R60GB2-BRKT)

My Windows Experience Index for the hard drive did not go as high as I have seen but it did go from 5.5 to 6.9 so I am impressed. The speed is really unbelievable for this little machine. I am going to take it to FRYs this evening and tryout 4GB of ram to see what that does. This is so much quicker than even my new Sony laptop that I now have grounds to justify pulling the 500GB drive in that machine, which is way too big, and getting an SSD for it. Too bad it does not have 2 drive bays.

BTW, I paid $190 for the 60GB Corsair. It even has a mini-usb port on it. I will probably get a 128GB for the SONY. It seems at that size the drop off in write speed isn't any different from the 256GB and I will never fill that much space. I now have 160GB I can use in a portable drive in either machine. The 500GB from the sony I will probably use as a network drive.

Not a lot of info on these new Corsair drives as they are not suppose to be officially released here in the states yet. However read/write is 250/110 on the 60GB and 250/170 on the 120GB.

Thanks again for the guidance. This little thing rocks!!!, and I have not done any other tweeking.

I have done a bit of background and am considering buying this in the next week or so. Its 299 on the US site.

    http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211442

It appears to be the top dog for price and performance right now and has a 128mb cache vice 64 like many others. I just posted the SSD guys to get their thoughts.

    Nice change though eh????

The Adata and the Corsair may be the same drive. The spec's on both the 60 and the 120 match and they both have mini usb in the same place on the drive.

If you buy from the Newegg in the US, do you have to pay the difference in the exchange rate?

If you end up upgrading to 4GB on your 1410, please let me know what ram kit you purchased. I've found several dual channel, 800mhz kits for around $80 with good ratings, but have yet to figure out via the forum if they will work 100%.

looking at your 1810TZ pictorial i read you color-calibrated your LCD screen. Could you post the adjustments the calibration tool made? Or, would other screens give different ouput?

Funny you should ask since I posted something on that very same subject yesterday :p

As noted in that post, use Window's "manual" calibration tool; not only is a color profile from another unit / user useless, more importantly is that a HW calibration tool loads the adjustments directly in the Video Card's "LUT" (lookup table), something that cannot be manually done (AFAIK)... .

Give Windows a try; I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised with the results ;)

Missed that, my bad. My 1810TZ's LCD panel identifies as Samsung SEC3052, which is not swell either. I'll try with the Windows color calibration, there's some options i haven't tried yet.

    Thanks a lot!

"Swell" is my Eizo FlexScan S2231W-E 22" Wide-gamut S-PVA, but that puppy cost more than our 1810Ts ;) I think a Sammy is about as good as you can hope for in a 1410/1810T/Z and I think a hair better than AUO... :-/

Good luck & let us know how you fare :)
