just got a 1410 yesterday... man there is a ridiculous amount of bloat ware! all I've done is uninstall crap. I wish computers came with OS discs nowadays so you could reinstall...
-
True fact is the best you can do is a clean install. There are alot of preconfigured registry settings that are set for Acer and, on top of that, there are now alot of dead registry setting as well.
Clean install is the best way to go and you are lucky because, for the most part...all the drivers are within Win7... Thats what Ive experienced in doing my sons and my 1810s in any case.
If you are going to consider it, it is the best to go to Acer and download all the drivers just in case onto a USB.
Oh and the reinstall of Win7 is a piece of cake as well. Simply go to www.download.com and download the Microsoft usb/dvd tool and get yourself an iso copy of Win7. That little program will make your usb bootable and install Win 7 to the usb so you can install it from there to your system.
Just some thoughts. -
there's an idea. I didn't really think about that... just flipped it over and it looks like there's a product key on the sticker so it would be possible to do a fresh install. -
Product key eheheh. If you look in the Acer area you will find a very interesting thread about reinstalling Win7 on Acers. It allows you to install ANY version of Win 7 with the legal oem key.

My 1410 arrives today. I have read this thread and the tweaks thread but I still need somebody's opinion on a case. I want a black, neopreme sleeve that fits as tightly as catwoman's jumpsuit. No accent colors, no piping on the outside, just plain. Discrete brand name is ok. Any recommendations? Oh, and did I mention that I don't want to pay a whole lot.
Bronsky -
well I tried the 10" HP sleeve and it didn't quite fit so I ordered this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997432
I can let you know in a few days how it fits. -
Recently bought a Tuari black neoprene sleeve from Target for my 1410. Cost about $12=$13. Fits like a glove. I am very pleased with it. Says it fits 10 inch netbooks but fits 11.6 Acer 1410 perfectly. No pocket for power brick.
-
Imma swing by my local Target today and see if they have any of these sleeves.

Edit: Local Target had the sleeve for $12. Fits perfectly - like catwoman's leather pants. -

So, I'm not sure how I can resolve my boot delay issue. I'm running the latest BIOS (3303) and it's set to use AHCI. I tried using IDE as the setting and it would cause a BSOD followed with a reboot, so I switched it back.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks! -
Sorry I have asked this question before, but it happened to be the last message on the page maybe got overlooked.
1) How do I find the recent updates for the Chicony Webcam? It seems no one ever mentioned anything about it. Do you use the ones on Acer website, or?
2) I would like to double check if the Intel drivers have been installed correctly.
The SATA Driver can easily be double checked under System Devices --> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller
The graphic display driver can be double checked under System Devices --> Display Adapters.
But I cant find the chipset. Chipset driver should be 9.1.1.1025 at this date...But where do I find it under Systems to double check the version number?
Many Thanks,
Houman -
Houmie75, I do not think that there's a way to check the chipset drivers... just install the latest and be done. As far as the webcam goes, simply downloaded the ones from the Acer wesbite.
-
is there anyway to edit the amount of RAM the system sets aside for graphics? I upgraded from 2Gb to 4Gb and I'd like to increase the amount of video memory.

OK first off the 4500MHD works a bit differently to the systems that you are refering to. Unlike them the amount of memory used by the video card is dynamic rather then static.
The 64MB is dedicated memory which Acer has decided to implement. This is not a common setup for the 4500MHD which normally only uses shared memory. However the 64MB is faster RAM then the system RAM so this is a good thing although in the real world I do not think it would make much difference to the performance of the card.
So you cannot change the 64MB as it is dedicated. The 4500MHD in the Acer still does use shared memory and that is also not able to be set. It is controlled by the Intel GM45 chipset and will use up to 1631MB depending on what is required. If you want to know more search on Mobile Intel GM45 chipset.
Edit Here is a link http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-010488.htm -
which display drivers do i need do search?
the links in the beginning dont work but i dont know which chipset is the correct?

Windows 'updated' my video driver to a version which looks like the one two versions prior to the latest release.
In this old version, Gamma cannot be set below 1.0, e.g. the screen looks washed out and hurts my eyes.
Whenever i try to install the new, improved version, Windows says:
"The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer". But, Acer only has the old, crappy driver on their site.
How can i force Windows to accept the new, improved driver (which i was installed and worked perfectly before Windows 'updated')?
Edit: *SOLVED*
uninstall the 'updated' drivers, restart, install the new driver, restart.
Somehow if one installs it that way, the install forgets about validation.
This really was a shock.
I need this computer for work and have to look at the screen in order to use it.
Intel/Acer, what were you thinking? -
don't worry guys 4500MHD is able to run starcraft2 without a sweat.. ram is auto allocated when it's needed.. W7 make sure it's making full use of your 4gb ram.. beside i added a 2gb SD for readyboost..
-
In my experience, "readyboost" is pretty much just a bad joke... a marketing ploy and adds little or nothing to actual speed or performance. But then, I suppose if you spring for the class 6 or higher SD cards (fast but expensive) you might get noticeable results.
-
add it if u had extra sd card
it's been there since i bought it so i'm not bother to take it off...

The first post needs to be updated.
Check for current video drivers:
http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/detect.htm
The ones I installed were:
Intel Mobile 4 Chipset Driver - 15.17.1.2086 (8.15.10.2086)
WinVista7_15171.exe
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=18801

http://downloadmirror.intel.com/18801/eng/relnotes_1007.pdf
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/18801/eng/relnotes_gfx.htm -
Readyboost really helps on system with up to 1GB of RAM. Over this quantity its "boost" is negligible or even slowdowns the system.

The 64 bit drivers for Vistsa and Windows 7 can be downloaded here:

I'm on an 1810T. What's the workaround to get this installed? -
http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/detect.htm -
It may help to unzip the intel drivers and install from the unzipped folder, i don't remember whether this was necessary though.
Afterwards, don't let windows auto-update your driver - it will install a driver from september '09 -
I still get the vertical lines with the new driver (not every time, just on occasion). A reboot normally clears it up.

1410 stopped turning on today. the light comes on, then shuts off instantly. i contacted acer, and when getting rma instructions, explained that I had previously upgraded the ram and hdd (months ago). He put me on hold, then said my standard warranty is void! A hard drive or ram upgrade does not constitute a void of warranty even though this rep said so.
edit: no worries. the u.s. acer repair center isn't far from me. this is going to get interesting. maybe while there, I should tell them the myriad of problems w/ this craptacular notebook. Where to begin: heat sink fan metal contact LOUD vibrational noise, high pitch whine emanating from ram area (which i why I returned my 1st 1410 to newegg!), unnecessary flex in keys; 5% daily battery trickle/discharge while OFF. Now, seemingly a power supply issue. [sigh]. I don't think I'll be purchasing any more Acers after this abysmal customer service experience, so the tentative experience from repair center is pivotal. It would be amusing if they patronize me further and try to renege on their contract.... no qualms with small claims action! I plan on writing the legal dept. this week if need be. I'd like to think I'm helping the next guy who calls in and believes he voided his warranty merely by a mundane task: upgrading ram/hdd. -

@ hakujin
try removing the battery and putting it back in - i had the same problem here after upgrading the RAM and the SSD. removing and reinstalling the battery helped and I had exactly the same problems you had (lights going on and device turning off immediately) -
Small claims court? Writing the legal department? Do u think you will even get an email or mailing address anywhere outside customer service?
My guess is you have not been wrapped in the ridiculous tape involved in a lemon system in the past. Like I said...ps keep us updated.
(Wheres that eating popcorn icon when I need it?) -
This is not much of a mode but It's a good idea...at least, I think so.
I have all 4 corners of my touchpad assigned for programs. I sometime miss tapping the corners when not looking since the edge between the touchpad & the palm rest are so smooth, you can't feel the edges at all. It's a pain to move your eyes away from the screen....here's what I do. Put strips of scotch tape along the edges. -
Yes, Acer has a legal dept/exec customer/whomever you'd like to call them in the U.S. I could have been transferred were it not Easter Sunday. They have a defined protocol just like anybody else, just be specific when you call. They also have their U.S. [marketing] HQ in San Jose, CA and I already have the address. But since they've no doubt had legal action against them in the past, it's extremely easy to find out who to address to, perhaps even their counsel's addy. There's no serious tape really. The fact they are a Taiwanese company has little bearing as they do business & pay taxes in the US. Do you actually think they can hide or something just because they are a large cap? Quite the opposite.
S-i-m-p-l-e: Exhaust recourse w/ Acer which would be the RMA and then contact them to see if they'd like to pursue further arbitration and if no go, file a breach of contract suit in small claims. It's that simple, even as pro se. My wife is just extremely useful in argument strategy.
They'd be extremely ignorant not to settle as their representation will probably bill per hour the price of this laptop. They know that. All I'm looking at is court fees, and since my pc is not damaged [by me]; manufacturer's defect, they have no argument, other than I upgraded RAM/HDD "3 months" prior to this probem. That's a laughable argument in and of itself really, even if I were a PC hardware layman, which I'm not and can easily substantiate to a judge.
Welcome to the USA sir.You arbitrate, or you sue sometimes. Occasionally, it's the only way to get the attention and resolve things amicably. And when the registered letter comes, it gets attention.
