At first, I replaced my 1810T's Intel WiFi Link 1000 w/ a 5300, then yesterday I replaced the 5300 with an Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300. I'm happy with the throughput and increased range I get. My router is a Linksys E3000 and I get pretty good range w/ the combo..
While my 1810T was opened up, I noticed what looked like an extra mini-PCIe slot w/out the socket to insert a card into:
(circled in red in this picture)

I placed my third wifi antenna in that spot. If we solder a mini-PCIe socket onto that extra slot, will it be fully functional?

I noticed that empty spot with the outline and markings for a full sized mini-PCI-e slot on my 1410=8803. Opened my ram slots for the first time last week after having this netbook for 7 months. Is that missing socket where I'm supposed to install an internal bluetooth module or is a BT daughter board meant to replace the Intel WiFi Link 5100 board?
Can someone post instructions and tips for preparing solder equipment and important steps. I've been a novice solderer since 1997, in high school I built a light modulator from scratch, even molded and cut the plastic. Anyway my problem is I can't figure why when I try to solder these days I can't get the solder to stick to anything? It just runs away in round balls. Seems to only stick to wires but never to PCB board contacts.
Is there anyone here that was able to run DDR2-800MHz ram on the 1410 SU3500 units because this http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...810-timeline-11-6-thread-131.html#post6275916 is the issue I'm having right now. -
I have the 1410 SU2300, but the process is relatively simple. I would recommend starting over so we can get everything straight. Firstly, check with CPU-Z, and post here what size modules you have, and in what ports. In my netbook, I had 2x1gb sticks. I actually accidentally rewrote the SPDs on the modules to be 2gb sticks, so when I did the first one, my computer thought it had 3gb of ram, lol. I had to use the tape trick to reflash the module and get it working again.
Anyways, post up what kind of ram you have, and we'll try to get you squared away. -
I have the 1810tz and I just a new dual band router. I set it up and the 5ghz and 2.4ghz signals are being sent but I seem to only find the 2.4ghz signal. Does the wireless card support 5ghz?
-
It depends on the card installed. The Intel 1000 supports 2.4 GHz only. You can find the datasheet here: http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/wireless/adapters/1000/index.htm

Thanks for the quick reply. That answers everything! Oh well. There goes the dual band!

can you please share where you got your intel 6300 from and how much it was?
How's the performance against the 1000?
EDIT: if you soldered the mini pci-e slot it wouldn't be fully functional. That slot hasn't all the required lines, only the usb ones.
Thanks! -
Hi,
Then this is the location for the WWAN card option
Michael -
I'm in the USA and purchased the Ultimate-n 6300 from A+ Tech on Amazon.com.
Performance compared to the 1000 is noticeably improved. The 6300 takes three antennas vs. the 1000's two. The 6300 is also dual band. I'm able to get a constant and stable 300mbps connection with my Linksys E3000 using both 2.4GHz and the 5GHz bands.
I haven't been able to find a router though that can do 450mbps on the 5GHz band so I haven't tested that capability of the 6300 yet. -
So I think I just found the solution to turning the DDR2-667 into DDR2-800 manually using the editor instead of cloning a completely different module's SPD. The new new version of Thaiphoon Burner allows editing those extra previously inaccessible timing values. New version is also made for both 64-bit & 32-bit now http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...810-timeline-11-6-thread-131.html#post6278721

the usb lines are working
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...ation-sensor-analog-joystick.html#post5502634 -
And what about battery drain? Is it worse?
-
I haven't noticed any decrease in battery life. I'm still getting around 7 hours doing some web-surfing, word-processing and other work with a fully charged battery.
-
i wonder about that position of the third antenna - is it safe? i mean for males.
afaik wi-fi antennas are usually placed in display frame which is away from the lap. -
Just a short information. If you solder only the Mini-PCI connector this will not help, you also need to add the SIM card holder. It is located under the keyboard.
And there are still some questions regarding firmware supporting it, USB lines and power. I think it is a lot easier to just buy a simple and small UMTS USB Stick. In the end you could also try to get this inside the unit at the location where the mini pci card should be. But the effort is not worth it from my opinion. Also the mod with a real mini pci card is quite expensive, only the card is already more expensive than any USB stick you can get. -
SUCCESS! I got it to work! http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...810-timeline-11-6-thread-131.html#post6283945
The screenshots with the Kingston module are on the original quoted post -
well, 1x4GB SODIMM is nearly impossible to find and not affordable.
thx for the info though. interesting. -
Hey, for a measly 186 bucks you can increase your battery life by a whopping 10 minutes ( or something like that - if at all)
Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
I've seen 1x4GB for $100-$200 and I'm being generous about the $200. Of course I believe it was DDR2-667 but I'm pretty sure someone posted a link to one one of these Aspire 1410 threads.
screenshots of the discharge rate with the stock Samsung module are here http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...810-timeline-11-6-thread-132.html#post6290404 it seems the kingston module consume less power than the Samsung module -
That's why I posted the link to Newegg. RAM prices have increased heavily. It doubled within the last half year or so.
The values are still within the normal variability, so you can't estimate the power savings due to the removal of one memory module. To get rid of the fluctuations in the results, you need a long time test. Battery Eater (reader's test) should be good for that job.
Without doubt, removing a memory module will decrease the power demand of a laptop. Unfortunately, larger modules have higher power consumation, so the replacement of 2x2GB by 1x4GB might have no effect on battery life at all.

Hi, new here, just got a Gateway EC18 series, which is the same thing as the 1410 (I've even loaded a bios from Acer, since they haven't bothered updating the Gateway site). Anyway, wondering if anyone else is seeing the same thing? Seems many people are undervolting these: one link in the first post advocates CrystalCPUID, while the other advocates RMclock. I've played with both of these, including the "fix" to get CrystalCPUID to work after restarts, but it doesn't appear that either one really helps matters. It seems that CrystalCPUID can't undervolt while doing clock control at the same time, and RMclock seems to do something "funny" with clock control while undervolting. I've monitored the power drain through batterybar during each one, plus just letting Windows handle things, and during idle/low usage, power draw was between 5.5-10w regardless of which I was using. In fact, base Windows power management might have had a slight lead (by maybe .2w). Are others seeing this too, or are most really getting much better life using these tools? If it's the latter, then perhaps I'm not doing something right?
Thanks! -
Hi,
with these low-voltage CPUs, I doubt undervolting has a significant effect on battery life. Even with Windows internal power saving mechanisms, the CPU will run at the lowest specified voltage and frequency.
You can expect some additional power saving if you can achieve significant lower voltage with rmclock or similar tools.

Has anyone tried removing a Logitech Unifying Receiver from it's plastic shell / casing and connecting it directly to the USB lines on a 1410 / 1810's empty mini-PCIe slot? Looks like Logitech is using this proprietary unifying receiver in all of their new products (mice, keyboards, keypads).
I want to attempt this, but don't have the soldering skills myself and am not sure what the voltage / power requirements are for the unifying receiver. Can we get power from the 1410 / 1810's empty mini-PCIe slot? -
Found a similar modification done to a Lenovo, only they soldered directly to a USB port:
Logitech Unifying Mouse Receiver Integrated into Lenovo W500 Laptop Engineerable -
Power should be sufficient since it can feed the WWAN module (detected as USB device btw), which might draw more than such a tiny radio device.
Michael -
Hmmm... Standard USB2.0 supplies 5v, but I see only 1.5v and 3.3v traces on the mini-PCIE connector.
-
Oops...
Are we talking about different connectors perhaps?
I haven't opened my 1810TZ, and I don't want to do that in the near future at least. My 1810TZ came with WWAN factory installed. Windows detects it as USB device. I (perhaps falsely) assumed, PCI express has also "USB inside". Well, this should be at least true for Express Card connectors, which our computers most likely do not have.
Michael -
Is that BT only a Jumper connection...Mini pci-E can provide BT+Wifi together depend on card, but most have the BT on jumper on Acer Brand.

Hi, im new to this tread, im just wondering if a Ferrari one can get some love here too. There isnt that much support on forums for this little beast but they are so similar in design to the other acer 11.6" notebooks. I bought it because it stands out from the others in terms of looks & sports an eXternal Graphics Port (in which im still waiting patiently for any solutions to actually be released!!) I know its got AMD all under its bonnet, but I'm personally inquiring about a 3G upgrade..
Surely the Ferrari must have the same sim card pin-out as the others, despite the minor design differences. And if the the 3.3v jumpers are located in the same place. Someone mentioned if you get the right sim card part, you dont even need to solder the jumper...? I'm also actually wondering if a Intel Centrino 6250 Wifi + WiMax mini pcie card is compatible with these netbooks. Instead of soldering in a second pcie slot, one could just use that card. Anybody gone to the measures of even thinking about this? This all could be abit easy with the right know-how.
Any advice is welcome.
By the way, i have already done a bluetooth upgraded with bcmxxx46, its the same process as the others, for any Ferrari owners looking in for help. -
When I bought my 1410T, I had looked at the F1. The EGP is a great idea, shame Acer has done nothing with it. I know that there is a Fujitsu solution. I think the concept is a dead end for Acer and MSI is making an external GPU with an Express connection.

those of you using a HDD for your OS, I found a drive maintainance program that's very detailed and useful http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...marks-brands-news-advice-175.html#post6312305 . I believe other users have reviewed/promoted previous versions.

there is new Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family driver
version 15.17.4.2119 (8.15.10.2119) -
Using my 1410T outside for the first time since I bought it. I am actually surprised how well I can see the display even in sunlight. All I have to do is get an angle to the display that does not reflect directly into my eyes. I thought this would be unreadable out here by the pool.

I like this 1410T more everyday I own it. Even when I get a larger unit for my main notebook, I have the feeling that this beast will still be my constant companion. -
Anyone tried this?

Where can I get a second A/C adapter for my 1810T at a good price, don't need the power cord just the brick. Any good place that offer free shipping? I was looking at DealExtreme, but can't seem to find the exact one.
Also, what is a good place for batteries? I know there was a page somewhere in this thread, but can't find it now
Thanks -

Any of our Canadian friends seen the Acer 752 SU2300 on sale in Walmart in Canada?
Cant find it on the web and I've seen an article that says its for sale in walmarts across canada. If this is right, the price looks great.

$2 shipping to Canada, I guess not too bad. My original power cord is a 3 prong, that's only 2.
I was just looking at it yesterday. The only downside is the 3cell, but still not a bad price at $350 -
Wow thanks. That is a great price. There is still an old 1410T for sale on Amazon for over $500. Do they come in colors - like Sapphire Blue (I mean who really cares about any other color?

What can somebody do is get it at 350$ and get a 6cell battery for $38.
BATTERY FOR ACER Aspire 1810T Timeline AS1410 AS1810TZ - eBay (item 270584895191 end time Jun-25-10 19:00:07 PDT)
Still a superwow deal, and will have a spare battery too.Let's not forget that these babies use to go for 450$ regular price. -
You can still get the Gateway version (EC1805u or EC1803u) for $350 at Tigerdirect/Compusa/Circuit City. Less 12% Bing CB nets around $315 shipped. 6 cell, 250GB, but it's the SU3500 (single core) instead of the SU2300.
-
Thanks, but I already bought the other one with the 2 prongs. I figure that way I can share the same power cord with my PSP charger, so I carry less stuff in my backpack
Don't care much about the A/C adapter, but you think these eBay or DX batteries are anywhere near as good as the original ones? btw, my 1810T came with 5800mAh not 5200 -
About a year ago I bought a 7600mah battery from one of these Hong-Kong sellers for my little Acer Aod-150 netbook for $32.It lasts 12.5 hours with heavy use and after a year it's still going strong with only 8% wear.Needless to say the charger is gathering dust and the netbook gets charged only at nights.
-
ok just checked with cpuz. 1x2gb ram
-
I have the 5800mAh battery by the way and 66% means 3:16h left - so 100% is 4 hours 57 minutes. Far away from those "8+ hours".
I have the SU4100 cpu, bluetooth and wireless, 3 GB Ram.
Anyway - to maybe opimize this I have the following question:
I have installed the 1810tray application and the CPU fan is going crazy when it goes beyond 59°C - it turns to high - slow - off - high - slow - off, each level is only on for a second. This happens when it is on fan mode auto. On native it is more often running at high speed but almost never turns off completely.
At temperatures below 59°C this never happens - any idea?
And I would like to know which setting is a good choice at "settings" -"undervolting: keep VoltageID @ or below 0,xxx V" -
%55 3:50hrs
There are many factors that affect battery life. However, it never is as great as the mnfg. make it out to be. I also have the same 5800mAh as you on my 1810T SE, and I get a little over 6hrs. of use out of it. However, I'm always on the Internet, so you got to take factors like wi-fi into effect. I keep my screen on minimum brightness for the most part, that helps. I never hear the fan going off in my lappy, unless it's connected to the A/C. Overall I am happy with the baterry life.
