How should I manage the performance and consumption of video?

It has win 7 and intel driver settings. One overlaps the other?

    Hi all,

New owner here. I found an Acer 1410 used with an SU2300 and bought it for school. It had been cannibalised by the previous owner who had removed 1 GB of RAM, swapped in a smaller hard drive and even replaced the original Intel 5100 wifi card with one branded Dell that only does 80211B and G.

All in all I guess I didn't get the best deal, but these are hard to find these days especially with a dual core processor and I am trying to get it back into shape. I have a few questions:

Which would be the best 80211N wifi card to install?

Did anyone ever finally find a bluetooth card that only flashes when communicating rather than all the time that it is switched on?

Has anyone who has installed a BT card measured the resultant loss of battery run time caused by the extra power draw?

Is there a consensus on where to buy a 5600 milliamphour battery to replace the 4400 it comes with?

Has a consensus appeared on how to best to get long battery life using Windows 7 64 bit?

I only had a cursory glance but there seems to be a socket for an extra mini PCIe card right next to where the wifi card is plugged in. Am I correct on this and has anyone used it if so?

BTW, I know much of this has been covered. I did make the effort to read this thread the whole way through a few weeks ago when I was looking for one of these machines. However, it has now gained a few dozen more pages and I have books to read for school that have less information! Moreover I did not find clear answers to these questions.

Thanks for any help and nice to be here :)

    Hi,
Many people like Intel 6200. But I think, a 5100 should be okay also.
I don't use my BT very often, so there isn't much additional power drain due to my BT usage.
On battery, use a custom energy profile based on "power saver" adjusted to your own demands. Plus some adjustments in the Intel VGA driver options.
Disabling Aero might help saving energy, and of course make sure you haven't much stuff running in the background.
The mini PCIe is for 3G cards. Unfortunately, there is no connector, and the SIM card holder is not present there, also.

    another 1810tz problem right here...
sometimes after pressing power button, i only get a white- grey screen with some green bars. after some seconds, the notebook is rebooting by itself and normally the acer logo appears and windows starts properly.
i wonder if this error is a known issue? looks like some graphics card problems.

This grey startup screen - got that too. Seems to somehow depend on change from cord to battery or waking up from suspend.
Didn't care for it since it finally always boots up.

I did a clean install of windows xp sp3 with drivers provided by the acer support site. Every time I restart the machine though the LCD brightness keeps getting reset to level 10, is anyone else with XP installed having this issue?

    Hi,

Windows XP is lacking lots of power management settings (thus reducing battery life) compared to Windows 7. Adjustment of screen brightness is one of these.

Perhaps the Acer power management tool from the 1410/1810 download section does help, but I am not sure.

I just bought a Olympic special edition 1810T and so far am very happy with it, although I've only had it about a day. I chose it over the 1830T, because the 1810T reportedly has longer battery life, and in my single run through I can confirm it gets around 8hr on light usage. Plus the Olympic edition in Canada has Bluetooth while the Canadian 1830T models don't and I didn't feel like sourcing one myself. The other components in the 1810T worked out well, receiving an Intel 5100 AGN WiFi card, DDR2 800 memory even though it was advertised as DDR2 667, and a Samsung LCD which doesn't have very impressive vertical viewing angles or contrast but at least doesn't have any dead or bright pixels.

I do have a driver question. I've updated to the latest drivers available on the Acer website for the 1810T plus the latest Intel drivers from their website. I noticed that the 1830T website has newer drivers for the Synaptics touchpad 14.0.6.0 vs 13.2.2.0, the Broadcomm Bluetooth module 6.3.0.4300 vs 6.2.0.9600, and the Realtek audio 6.0.1.6043 vs 6.0.1.5901. Does anyone know if these 1830T drivers can be used on the 1810T in terms of not just able to install, but no feature loss or references to features the 1810T might not have leading to stability problems? Maybe it's better just to stick to the 1810T drivers?

    Hi,

yes, you can install these 1830 drivers on your 1810. No problem. I sourced the Audio driver from Realtek directly.

I'm keeping mine as well - just can't seem to find anything wrong with it and don't want to risk not liking something about the 1830T. How did you get 8 hrs.? I get 6-6.5 on balanced and maybe an hour more on power saver.

Anyway, if you have success with the drivers please post - I will try them too since everything on mine is still stock and it is running well, so I don't want to take any chances. Congrats on the purchase. (damn this bilingual keyboard though!)

I am not so good with computer tweaking, can anyone tell me whether it is possible to replace the 250 GB hard disk of a 1810tz with a larger one, say 500 or 600 GB? Will this affect the battery life (positively/negatively??)?

I am torn between waiting 4 weeks before they get the Olympic version which here comes with 500 GB harddisk and bluetooth, or getting the 320 GB version now, also with bluetooth. I want a larger harddisk of course, but I am feeling impatient... PLus, I like the black cassis on the 320 gb much better than the silver one on the olympic version.

    Any advice, please??!

Offcourse you can change the Hard disk. It's very easy, already done that :)
I can't notice shorter battery life, but I don't seem to get longer battery either.

Thanks for good advice to both. Turns out the retailer was bluffing, none of them are coming. After a lot of sweet-talking, I managed to convince a retailer in Spain to ship it to me. Now I am facing new issues: he is shipping it with Vista 32 Bit installed. I want to upgrade to Windows 7.

    1. Should I keep the 32 Bit also on Windows 7 or should I upgrade to 64 Bit? Will the 64 Bit improve the performance of the computer, if I also upgrade from 3 to 4 GB of RAM? Is it worth the upgrade?

    2. I assume the OS will be in Spanish. Will there be any problems in buying the English upgrade version of Windows 7 or do I have to get my hands on the full version to get the OS in English?

Thanks a lot, any input is greatly appreciated!!

There isn't any 1810TZ or 1810T that ever came out with Vista of any kind.NEVER,NONE in any country in any language. The ones that had Vista were the first 1410T and 1810T with single core SU3500.So be very careful with this seller.Unless we are talking about a refurbished or a used model.

Very nice. I really didn't expect further support from Acer :)

Perhaps this fixes the battery drain if the system is shut down.

At least my 1810 survived the Bios flash :D

In any case, I've left mine unplugged since I flashed this morning. We'll see.

I'll wait to hear from you on this one. My 3820TG is down for another week at least and my 1410T is my primary business machine ATM. No bios flashing for me until the motherboard for my 3820TG shows up fixed.

With the 3314 BIOS I've lost about 4% in 36 hours of powered off time according to BatteryBar. It's been a while since I've run this test so I can't remember exactly how fast it used to drain but this would seem like an improvement. Not perfect, but not terrible.

I'd consider this a slight improvement (I am checking myself at the moment) - compared to ~5% within 24 hours.

So I finally made the decision and bought myself an 1810TZ. Came with a 5800mAh Panasonic battery. Runtime is ~9hrs on low brightness and wifi. Glad I didn't buy the 1830. I immediately killed the Win7 Home installation and installed Win 7 x64 Professional. Now I have a couple of questions:

    1. What are the card reader and webcam drivers good for? Both devices seem to work just fine with the standard Windows drivers.

    2. Is there a way to transfer the Cyberlink PowerDVD installation from the recovery partition? I suppose I would just need the license key/serial number or something like that.

    3. Any tips on what type of RAM upgrade to get? This 1810TZ came with an Elpida DDR2-800 CL6 module. I plan on doing the TME mod and some overclocking.

P.S. Anyone wanna buy a Windows 7 Home Premium x64 German license? :D

Edit: another thing, the Intel Wifi Link 1000 seems to have a max. txpower of 14dBm (25mW) in Linux (kernel 2.6.35). Is this a limitation of the card or a driver problem?

Just make sure DDR2-800 runs at 6-6-6 instead of 5-5-5. I tested many DDR2-800 at 5-5-5 on my AS1410, none of them worked. Once I use SPDtool change parameters to 6-6-6 for DDR2-800, all worked

I tested with Elpida, Samsung, Hynix 2-GB SODIMMs DDR2-800 at 6-6-6 on AS1410-2497, all passed(Run memtest86 from USB 2 or 3 times, Win 7 built-in extented memory test 2 or 3 times). Did your memory pass same memtest86 on other known good PCs ? - When I had issue with DDR2-800 2GB memory at 5-5-5, it consistently failed to play back Youtube 1080p videos, oftens times, the browser generates illegal operation. Also memtest consistently fails block move test but all other tests pass.

The RAM is ok, the bars was in another notebook before, and this system ran stable. Memtest was ok for 2 times. After replace the stock ram and another module, I replaced with Samsung 6-6-6 800, the system runs but one times today the system freeze again, and after that it runs stable. U mean if I watch 1080p Flash I can test the ram too?

Really?? The 1810TZ with Vista is all over the place in Spain. Here for example:
    Ultraporttil Acer Pentium Dual-Core As1810Tz-Pdcsu4100 3/320 11W Vh

But luckily, I found a seller who has it with Win 7 in stock, so the Vista issue is not relevant anymore, to me at least.

I have another question though, I now (again) have the option between two versions of the 1810TZ, one with 500GB, 4gb RAM and bluetooth, and another with 320GB, 3 gb RAM and no bluetooth. I wonder, is there any chance that the former with a larger drive will have less battery life than the latter with a smaller drive??

My AS1410-2497 battery used to drain 5% each day. For the first time, the battery meter lost only 1%(from 60% to 59%) for 24 hours off after updated to 3314 BIOS. Considering shutdown and boot up takes about 1%(About 2 minutes of running time without meter reading), I am happy that the probelm appears to be fixed for my laptop.

Ah! That is fantastic. Now I can finally go about and order my first ultraportable! So excited!!!! :D :D I sure hope it won't let me down.. You also have the 1810TZ with 500gb and 4gb of RAM, is it also the Olympic version? How many hours of battery life do you get? (Sorry to bring up such a never ending topic...)

Had the laptop shut down and disconnected lying around for 3 days: No battery drain at all :)
Issue fixed with the new Bios

No idea about the card reader's driver. Perhaps it simply provides a few icons depending on what media is inserted.
The webcam "driver" (at least for my Suyin webcam) seems to be a simple application only. It is powered by Windows standard drivers from factory.
You can install the application from the "drivers and apps" DVD you created before wiping the HDD.
In case the factory installation is intact, the installation files could be retrieved from C:\OEM\Preload\Autorun\APP (the C:\OEM folder is hidden for whatever reason)
Since you don't have genuine install media, your sticker is without commercial value. You couldn't even sell it on ebay ;) But the key is good enough for a Win7 Home Premium (32 OR 64 bit) in your native language. :D

    I created what?

Actually I just made an image of the 12GB hidden recovery partition, not the Windows 7 partition.

Ok, this should be floating around on the recovery partition. Actually I don't now if I should bother, MPC-HC works great and plays everything including 1080p.

Ah, now that's where you're wrong. You can download the install isos legally from Digital River. All you need is the sticker. Might also be a good solution to get a clean install if you want to use your original license.
