How do you lot (5920 owners) feel about the build quality of of the notebook? And also, what really is the colour of the interior. Some people are saying cream, beige, and also grey.

    Thanks, han.

On the acer forum we usually link users who want upgrades to the acer euro site. It is updated far more often than any other acer update site acer pays more attention to Europe more than any place else. For the aspire 5920 you can find the direct link here. To answer any questions on whether these drivers will work with US models the answer is yes they will work on any aspire 5920.

Well, I did update the drivers but it still gives me crackling noise when I adjust the brightness while listening to music. I will run other tests again with the programs you recomended and post it on your thread ASAP.

    hey jam12,

The build quality of my USA Best Buy 1.5ghz model is excellant!! The inside color is lightish grey, it looks very nice. You'll be very happy with this notebook!! No dead pixels, no strange noises!! Everything works .

The colour COMPLETLY varies depending on the lighting conditions. With yellowish lighting, the notebook looks beige. With bright sunlight, you would be tricked into thinking its grey. When strong white light is reflected off it, the notebook surface looks white. Either way, the colour was chosen because it is comfortable on the eyes over long periods of time. I tend to agree.

BTW, to those that already have this notebook, have they tried using the infra-red port next to the card reader? I want to verify it is working, as I want to get a MCE remote, but cannot get infra-red to activate with my mobile phone or anything else. I heard it only works with MCE remotes, so if anyone had one, could they please test it. THanks.

Ah rite, thats cool then. I've heard other people say that the build quality is poor although most of them looked at the notebook at there local shop (best buy I think) in the US. Are you from the US?

Any one else willing to comment on the 5920? I'm really want to an honest response seeing as this is will potentially be my first notebook.

    Jam12..

I've had mine for over a week now and I'm very happy with it. I can't think of a better laptop to buy for $1099. Build quality is good, not as solid as Dell or Apple however for the price it is a good value. If I had to do it all over I'd buy it again, no regrets. I was shopping Asus, Toshiba, Apple and Dell along with Acer. Another factor that sold me is that we use a lot of Acer laptops but mostly Dell laptops at my work and the dozen or so Acer laptops we have that see a lot of use have been very reliable.

My buddy and I bought one, we both have noticied that the keyboard repeat rate is very low for this Acer. Basically, this means that if you are a fast typer than you'll miss letters. Very frustrating to type on.

We got a support ticket, we'll see what happens.

I'm a fast typer too... and i am missing chars sometimes when i type fast but I noticed for me it isn't the keyboard refresh rate its that with this keyboard I have to consciously make an effort to strike keys directly.. annoying at first but got used to it.

That isn't the refresh rate. It is the nature of how one types on a notebook. Hook up a keyboard for full speed typing. I have had that issue with all laptops. This one isn't bad, as I can type fairly fast while hitting all the keys directly. My biggest complaint is accidentally hitting the media buttons off to the right side of the keyboard when going from typing to clicking with my attached mouse.

You may have your own issues, but your hypothesis is extremely incorrect. I've owned a great many laptops and they do not inherently have slower response rate than peripheral keyboards nor is it impossible to replicate your wrist attitude with that you use typing on any other keyboard.

The problem can be clearly illustrated by typing the same key repeatedly with the same anatomically correct position with varying degrees of speed. If you go at a 60WPM+ speed, you lose characters.

this is my first laptop and im well impressed with it

its really quiet when just surfing....you cant hear it at all

and when gaming you dont hear it cos your into the game but i dont think its that loud when playing games anyway

    ive been playing :

call of duty 2 on near enough full settings and its been really smooth

stalker skipped once or twice so i just reduced the shadow detail and now it plays better than my athlon x2 desktop

rainbow 6 vegas plays smoother than my desktop pc which was quite jerky

i give this laptop 9.5 out of 10

    fear plays pretty good

Just thought I would add a few issues I have had with games. Im using stock drivers.
The Longest Journey will install, but not run. Impossible to uninstall, so don't install in the first place! (Old version, not the re-released)

Far Cry loads up the game to white artifacts. Video cutscenes load, but when the game starts, its either VERY misty, or the graphics card is just displaying white...either way I cannot play it.

Most newer games run without any problems. Compared to my Geforce 4 ti4600, this card is much more powerful, but turning on Full Screen AA in games like Tomb Raider Legend kills the frame rate. However, less so than turning on "next-gen" content.

Went to BestBuy to return something and came out with Gemstone. ($1250 + tax)
I bought it on a spur of the moment really after playing with it only for 2 mins. (I had no idea it was in stock)

Designwise it's alright and MacBOok lovers will probably be laughing at you in the coffee shop, but they don't realize that you paid half as much for similar spec'd machine (that even has HD-DVD) and who is going to laugh when someone steals your MacBOok?

Stock driver when playing Doom3 on the alpha Labs 4 it crashes 10 secs into play. NV driver has stopped message. Back to desktop. I can restart and play the game from beginning but can't get past that level without borking. It happen before patching Doom3 and after it was patched. I tried under clocking the GPU /Mem no change.

From the sounds of it you guys have had success with other games. I drop by BB and pick another one up and try a new one.

This is probably due to driver problems with vista. Try updating to the latest unofficial vista Laptopvideo2go drivers with the modded inf. Should do the trick. But *might* cause some problems for HD-DVD playback on your HD-DVD drive (if you have one), otherwise you would have to wait for official drivers.

Since I'm a noob to notebooks, in terms of owning one, whats this stuff about CPU temperature? There's many threads that ask about how to monitor temperature of the notebook etc.
Could someone tell me the basics of this? And also what the average temperature's of the 5920 are?

    Thanks, jam.

Well your hardware's temperatures should not exceed some limmits..
Not only cpu should be monitored, but vga and hard disk temps too..
    Generally,the lower,the better..

For monitoring you can try many tools...I recommend Core Temp for cpu temp, you can also try notebook hardware control which also allows you to control your cpu's spee.
Also a very handy tool is Riva Tuner, mainly it's used for overclocking the vga,but also has hardware monitoring, that alows you to monitor cpu, vga, hdd temps and many other things, and can also be used to show the current values when gaming.

My Aspire 5920 when idling has about 42-46C cpu temp,56C vga and 46C hdd.
When it's under full load cpu can get up to 80C,vga @default clocks up to 86 and oced 90+ an lastly hd gets up to 49C.

These temps with 29-30C room temp, and Arctic Ceramique thermal paste.

If the notebook increases over the limit (about 90C?), is there a potential danger i.e. will it blow?

    Lol,no don't worry.. :p

When cpu reaches 90C I think,it shuts down to prevent damage.
For vga there is also a temp limmit that it slow downs..

    Hi all!

I would have a question for 5920 owners. What's about with its portability? I'm thinking about buying one. I wanna take it from home to university and back. Weight is not a big problem. So does it have any effect carrying it with me commonly?

If you want to get an idea of the weight...

Get a backpack and empty it out and place 3 bags of sugar inside. Thats how heavy it is. The dimensions are fairly large, but inside a bag, it takes on the attributes of a ring binder or folder.

You aren't going to use it on your lap in a train (unless your train has tables), buy carrying it around is fine. Not very heavy at all, assuming the weight is evenly distributed over both shoulders in in a bag with padded straps.

    7 icons.

I am pleased with the resolution for the size it has..

In my desktop I use 1680x1050 but the screen is 20" so it's ok for me..

    Hi guys,

I searched the internet for the AS 5920 and saw models like 5920-6649,5920-6661....Is this in the 5920g series which you were mentioning?

The first one I mentioned is 1.5 GHz processor while the second a 2 GHz one...
Could you please tell me your 5920Gs exact model number with price ($) and there specs...am looking a 15"/15.4"/17" laptop
Does going for 802.11n makes sense I mean is any n/w availability present..
Also does a higher processing speed bring in more heat issues....
Does applying the thermal paste brings in any wararny issues/performance problem
I am yet to buy my first laptop.........
But your posts made me feel to go for 5920G series...
