On my 4820TG switchable graphics is working correctly on win 8, I installed first the latest official from acer for win7 and then i updated them with the ones available on 4820T download page, after selecting windows 8
-
so is there any ways to get windows 8 working?? i had tried installing the drivers from the acer site using compatibility mode but it was still to no avail. had to install drivers in discrete mode and after i rebooted the computer and started in switchable mode, the screen went black.
-
for the FIRST time, leshcat's driver works almost perfect. You might need to use it for a couple days for it to work correctly if it's not a clean install.
-
which leshcat driver r u using? which graphic card do u own?
-
In my signature
. The latest always.

Hi, tried to update my Graphics card driver. I downloaded the ATI 5650 driver from here (see below).
I uninstalled like it recommended. Then tried to do a fresh install. Now I am screwed. It says cant install ATI catalyst as it is not compatible. I definitely screwed this up. Now no drivers at all. Please help.
Acer Aspire Timeline X 3820TG 64 bit ATI Radeon HD 5650
Windows 7 Home Premium edition
"
Download - Catalyst 12.2 hybrid and hotfix
Contains AMD Catalyst 12.2, driver version 8.950.00, Intel HD Graphics v8.15.10.2622 and ATi HDMI drivers.
Clean install recommended, use the cleaning tool provided within the download (YaD's UnifL Cleaner)
Instructions:
1) Unpack 12.2 WHQL UnifL v1.0 constumising it per your desire.
2) Navigate to %12.2 WHQL UnifL%\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF\
3) Overwrite both files with downloaded one's.
4) Clean up driver using YUC.
5) Install driver again.
This driver update is compatible Windows 7 SP1. Install the drivers and Windows 7 SP1 update will appear in Windows Update. However it's still best to update Windows using the full installer, which can be found here.
[For compatibility purposes] ATi Catalyst 11.11 and Watermark Remover. Contains ATi Display Driver 8.911.0, Intel HD Graphics 8.15.10.2555 and ATi HDMI 7.12.0.7702. Use this if the Catalyst 11.12 or 12.1 driver has problems. This is from Alien9." -
Actually I had downloaded this one from the post before the other updated driver post. I thought they were the same....maybe not.
Default Re: 3820TG Owner's Lounge - Part Two
Acer has updated Radeon 5650 Catalyst drivers with integrated Intel HD drivers to 8.901.4 ...for those of you who don't like the buggy, homemade franken hybdrid drivers, then here's the link: http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...cer&SC=EMEA_27 -
^^ broken link
-
For those who are on windows 7 and want something later than acer's switchable driver while retaining the switchable capability, leshcat's driver version 12.6 is the way to go. For windows 8, use his latest driver, best switchable driver for acer 3820tg for far.
-
Altough 4820T links on Acersupport sitre seems to göne, 4820tg last win7 driver works perfectly on my 5650 3820tg switching is possible after netframework 3,5 enabled on Windows features on off menu. But amd's last official catalyst drivers are causing trouble on swithcable cards as indicated.

Happy new year everyone!
I have a question about upgrading the memory on my 3820tg. I'm looking to purchase 2 4GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM modules. I know the 3820tg's motherboard limits RAM speeds to 1066MHz. I'm not trying to OC.
My question is: if I install 1600MHz RAM, will my 3820tg still properly work? The RAM speed being limited to 1066MHz is not my concern, I just want to know if it will be stable and be able to fully utilize the total 8GB capacity. (The reason I'm asking is the 1600 RAM is currently on sale for a very good price and the 1066 RAM is nowhere close in price or availability). -
Yes it will work properly, and it will work 1066 mhz but you may also gain from cas latency. I used on acer 5320g 800mhz ram modules though they only worked 667mhz but normal modules were cas6 I was able to use 800mhz modules work on cas5. Maybe you can also gain from tightness.
-
leshcat's 12.10 driver caused unnormal heat on idle in my 5650. 60 C with powerplay on 57 C with powerplay off on idle.
-
The latest Leshcat driver lets me switch but the brightness controls do not work with the 5650. I tried the brightness tool and didn't have any success.
-
Has anyone successfully done a screen replacement on this laptop? After over a year of ownership I found out this thing can't take a foot and a half drop onto carpet. It looks like the panel behind the glass cracked. The right side of the screen is swirly and doesnt display correctly. Anyways, if anyone has done a screen replacement could you point me to the parts? Any help would be much appreciated.
-
yeah, that is the issue it has with most laptops. But the brightness is on max most of the time so it is fine with me.
-
Constant 43 and 44 here for me with powerplay on for me. I measured my temp with hwmonitor. My laptop came with 6550m, but it is shouldn't be any different than 5660m. Are you running windows 8?
Edit: That post was on the latest driver. Don't use old driver . I am on 12.11 beta 11, everything works except the brightness sometimes doesn't work and hdmi out is absolutely unusable. . -
hey, the screen for this laptop really generic. Ebay it and you will see tons of them for sale. Or try screencountry
-
Mine is stuck at about 1/3 brightness when running on the ATI. It probably would have been a smart idea for me to look at this thread prior to upgrading to Windows 8. This combined with some desktop headaches I've had in the past is making me think I'm done with ATI products for good.
-
I know how you feel. A temporary fix for that brightness problem while on ATI is to unplug your power, switch to intel, max your brightness, switch back to ATI.
-
Cool, thanks for the tip. Right now I just have it in BIOS discrete mode but I'll switch it back and give that a try.

Hello!
2.5 years in with this beauty, although more frail than ever.
I'm using my TV to watch TV-series and movies etc. It's linked to an Onkyo-receiver. What is needed on my laptop to get HD Audio? The Onkyo has "AUX PLII Movie" in the display, but I've had DTS Dolby Digital (or other phrases stating HD Audio) before. I guess I've formatted the laptop some time, without installing the necessary drivers again. -
Hi everyone,
A few days ago, I replaced the Atheros wifi card with an Intel Wireless N 1030 card, in order to use Wireless Display with my smart TV. Everything looks fine, except this problem;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbjMJinWBv8
It says "[Intel Notebook] Device is not connected". What the hell is this? My TV sees my 3820TG, my 3820TG sees TV. But when I try to complete the last step, it gives this error! Really tired... -
Could be a glitch in the software. I haven't tried wireless display feature so I'm not sure. BTW, has anyone tried the Intel 6235ANHMW card on this notebook?
-
Anyone here hating the Atheros WiFi card? No matter what I do, it never establishes a good connection with my school's WiFi.
Worthy successor to the Acer 3820TG: http://www.vizio.com/thin-light/overview
Buy from eBay so it's slightly cheaper. -
Successor? There isn't any external GPU, did you notice that? It's not even close to 3820TG, in gaming terms.
It's an ordinary ultrabook, nothing more. -
Successor to mine... 5470 isn't that much more powerful than the Intel 4000.
Anyone replaced the Qualcomm Atheros WLAN with another WLAN card? What are people using? -
I think the Intel 6250 was the replacement wireless card of choice.
-
Because of the WiMAX? Canada doesn't have that. I'm actually looking at the Intel 6235 or 2230.
-
Doesn't matter 6250 is a good looking card. Its only £10 here which is really cheap especially if its got Bluetooth 4.0 I'm gonna get one for my m3 I find the atheros card so annoying especially with the poor signal output and random climoted connections when I'm 6ft from router.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2 -
According to Intel, 6250 doesn't have Bluetooth 4.0. Not that I used Bluetooth even once on my laptop..
-
hey guys, i've got a problem. I lost my recovery partition(original Acers with win7) and didn't make a copy of it anywhere. I have a Windows 7 sticker below the laptop and was wondering if there is any way to install win 7 and pair it with this serial number or get the recovery partition somewhere.. Anyone had this problem before?
-
You can re-install retail Win 7 and use your product key from the sticker although I think it will not activate automatically via Internet and you'll have to do an activation by phone.
-
so I would have to get a copy of a retail windows 7 home 64 bit yeah ? can it be done same way with downloaded copy of the internet and activate by phone ? not saying doing that is good or legit but thats my only option to make it legit..
-
Yes- a downloaded copy (there are still MS official ISOs I think) or just borrow a DVD from a friend or from work.
-
I would just back-up the digital certificate, load the OS from the MS ISO and restore the digital license. It's easier than wasting a half-hour on the phone with MS.
-
I had trouble saving and restoring the certificate with mine. Would have been less hassle to call MS.
Anyone try Skyrim on a stock i5 6550? I'm getting 25FPS on low and thought the 3820TG would do better. I guess Skyrim is more CPU intensive? This thing is showing it's age. I still love my 3820TG but games like Arma II, Planetside 2, Farcry 3, Skyrim all run terribly slow even on lowest settings.
Anyone ever build a mid range gaming PC and use fast internet (fiber infrastructure right to homes) to stream SP games via splashtop? I've been considering this. As I only play SP for the most part, if I can build a pc to run the above games on med/high with decent AA then stream to the 3820TG on the road or even at home then it might be a way to prolong the life of the 3820TG. I see videos of people running games to tablets with tegra and I'm thinking "I can do this to a laptop" but I can't seem to find any info on gamers doing so.
Thoughts? -
I've had no problems running ARMAII and Far Cry 3 in medium+ settings. It has been amazingly robust since I bought it two years ago and seems to run extremely well against current games.
What is your cpu? I upgraded from an i5 to an i7, which made dramatic improvements (especially to ARMAII). Also, replacing the hard drive to an SSD or Momentus XT would make a huge difference as the current HDD is one of the biggest bottlenecks against performance. Upgrading RAM to 8gb would make a difference too. -
Just before I sold my 3820TG I put a 128GB Samsung 830 in it. It was much faster than the Crucial M225 that I had in it for the past 2 years.
-
I have the i5/5650 and was able to play Skyrim and Farcry with good framerates. I don't recall the settings though, but they were surely close to the minimum. The only mods I have on the 3820 are the Crucial M4 SSD and 8 Gb of RAM
-
I owned Acer 3820TG-484G75nss
Specifications:
Intel® Core i5-480M processor (2.66GHz with TurboBoost up to 2.93GHz, 3MB L3 cache)
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Acer InviLink Nplify 802.11b/g/n
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 with Switchable Graphicstechnology (1024MB of dedicated DDR3 VRAM)
4GB RAM
750GB HDD
13.3HD Acer CineCrystal LED-backlit TFT LCD
16:9 aspect ratio
6 cell battery
Bluetooth 3.0+HS
Webcam
Just now, my timelinex was unable to start up, only the black screen and primary processor fan is running, but the hdd activity LED remain off, seems like no activity at all.
Anyone had experienced the similar symptom? Please advise... thanks -
Good point here. I'm now aware of wifi cards could provide bluetooth option for PC. Can anyone explain that? I had the stock Atheros card and it had Bluetooth 2.1 EDR, I suppose. Now I have Intel 1030 and system shows I have Bluetooth 3.0 HS. Before these, I was thinking that the system had a separate Bluetooth device. Now I see that it comes with wifi card, doesn't it?
By the way, I replaced Kingston 2x4 GB kit with G.Skill Value F3 2x4. Kingston was giving 4-5 blue screen error, once in a day. Today I received G.Skill kit and everything seems OK for now. I recommend these.
In addition to this; my stock Panasonic battery shows only %4 wear level. After 2,5 years of use, I think it's amazing. I haven't checked this section for over a year and result was a surprise for me.
-
I've had a 120GB Intel SSD in it since day one, plus 8GB Ram. I highly doubt just upgrading to an i7 will bring the performance increase I'd be looking for. And for the record I like FPS to be far above 30 FPS
I'm shocked you sold it...
How much faster btw. I'm pretty sure your Crucial was faster then my Intel but I had no idea upgrading the SSD could make a big difference.
I play a lot of older games for the most part and the 3820TG can pullf off 60FPS with vsync on. I'm spoiled by that. Some games I turn the settings down for the increase in FPS. I prefer smooth FPS over appearance. -
Guys, anyone can tell me
1. how to set my 3820T to NOT automatically switch between the two graphic cards when pluging in or plugging out the power adapter?
2. why after several hibernations and restorations from hibernation cause system to refuse switching the cards? Only win restart helps...
3. I suspect the existing hdd to be the slowest part of the comp. Therefore I think buying an SSD (for example 240 GB Intel 520/525) would increase this notebook in the biggest extent. I lack speed mainly within restarts, launchin application and for example browsing on this website (forum.notebookreview.com) -
Yes, mine has somthing similar a few times although I think my HDD light would blink a few times. Unplug the power and take out the battery and let it sit like that for 15 minutes. If that doesn't work you may also have to take out the RAM.
-
whats the deal...all the sudden im seeing gpu temps of 107c while playing guild wars 2...iv ran some pretty demanding games before and never broke 100...i also have arctic on my heatsink already...currently running 6550m@800/1000..should i be worried about damage at those temps? btw i keep my house cold so ambient temp is not the issue
-
Just bought a mushkin chronos deluxe 240gb ssd for my laptop should arrive by tomorrow, will keep you guys posted
I already upgraded the ram to 8gb. I haven't really found any replacement for this laptop it's just too perfect (mobility + performance). I guess i'll keep it a year or too and put the SSD in the new laptop...
I'm looking for a 14in max with 1080p panel + good cooling and great graphics/cpu thin and light.

Hello guys,
Iv'e recently aquired a 3820TG laptop, full specs here Egenskaper för Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG-5454G32n (LX.PXZ02.003)
I have a problem with the i5 450m cpu. In games the cpu gets turbo boosted to 2660 Mhz, but every few minutes the clock speed drops to 1100 mhz for 5-10 second, then goes back at 2660.
You can imagine how this feels... when the fps drops from 35-40 to 15-16...
What could be the problem? -
Your unit is throttling. I have almost never heard of an I5-450M throttling like that. Run Hardware monitoring and look at your temps when gaming. If you can't figure it out, you might want to look at Throttlestop to see if you can at least log the problem. My guess would be a gap in the heat sink surface or bad thermal transfer fluid in your unit.
Very high temps. If your fans are working, the first step is a complete cleaning of the fans and vent to remove all dust. Then check the connection between the heat sink and the CPU. How old is the thermal paste? If those don't work, it might be the thermal fluid in the heat sink failing.
No need for the GPU anymore. I went with the Thinkpad for work. It's incredible how much faster the Samsung was. I could feel the difference. -
I've checked the temps and the cpu throttles when the temp passes 101c. I'll take it to a service for dust cleaning and thermal paste replacement.
L.E.
What temperatures do you guys have in normal use and heavy gaming, like gta iv, nfs most wanted 2012 etc?
I want to know which is the normal temp, to see if the dust cleaning will make it run normal...
