Use the hybrid driver. I think a link to it is on page 31 of this thread.

Anyone who has ever experienced the 3820tg wont load further than "Acer Empowering People" where you can press F2 to go to bios?
I can press F2 it wont go into bios though.
Everything was working normally last night when I shut it down and now when I got home from work this is happening :S
It just stays at that screen... meh -
Hey guys first time poster so be nice if i ask stupid questions...
Just got myself a brand new 3820TG-7945. Very happy i did so
My speakers are making an extra crachkling/static noise. The problem is constant when the computer is trying to make sound including the start up windows sound, and other default windows noises like error msg and beeps. The static goes away if no noise is being produced. Sound seems ok when playing movies. The static only occurs on the left laptop speaker. Also I tried muting the Mic, no luck. Tested my output with headphones & i still get that static.
Updated audio driver.
Realtek high definition audio driver : 6.0.1.6316
Can anyone point me in the right direction to resolve this? Still have 10 days on in store waranty. Any help will be apreciated. Thank you. -
Hm, strange:
1. Use the latest Driver from Acers Support (clean de-/reinstalling routine)
2. Try unplug the Power Adapter (run on battery)
3. Try using different audio output devices if possible (HDMI/SPDIF)
And see if it persists. -
hey guys. this is about the over/underscan-problems with the ati cards and ccc.
just got my 3820tg with the 6550m. ive made a clean install and used the hybrid driver.. when i first connected to my samsung p2770fh-monitor through hdmi-hdmi, the image was underscanned. i managed to fix this with the scaling-option in ccc in res 1920x1080 and 1280x720 (which to me are the most important two resolutions to work). so, in windows these resolutions works just fine now.
also when i start up crysis in 1920x1080 everythings fine, so far so good.
BUT.
when i change it to 1280x720, it underscans! it seems to override the settings in ccc or something.
haven't had time to try other games yet, but i suspect it doesn't start and end with crysis.
anybody got a clue on this? would dvi-hdmi adapter help? is vga more stable when it comes to this issue? etc etc? -
Thank you for the fast replys
1. Done with latest driver from acer (older version of driver thow : 6.0.1.6029)
2. Done, no change.
3. i have nothing else than on board speaker and external speaker-headphones.
Thank you again... hoping for a solution
-
New? RMA it, easy and fast.
-
Second laptop with same problem... and there are no more left in the stores here so if i return it... i will have to find an other model
I was thinking that this was a comon problem... but seems that it is not.
-
Have you the powersave option for the soundcard enabled?
Windows driver and Bios? -
Bios is now 1.19 (flashed it yesterday)
Windows driver? (not shure what you mean)
Still looking for the powersave option for the soundcard -
Download a live (desktop) Ubuntu CD and see if you have any problems with sound on Linux. If you don't, then it is the drivers.
Oh, and I just remembered, in sound settings there is a check mark to disable Dolby sound or Enchanced sound or something like that. Disable it and see if that helps!
PS: If it is less than 30 days from the day of purchase, then Acer will pay for shipping to the repair depot. -
Wow, now this was an adventure... I finaly instaled unbuntu on a USB key, and the static was still there... so i got an idea of transering the "sounds.wav" that had static in them on an other computer. Turns out that the static sound is still there on the other system!!! So either i have to good of a hearing, or the files where corupted or that is just the way they sound. So for now, im guessing sound is ok. I will just exchange the ones that "buzz" to my ear for sounds of silence.
However, this problem gave me the oportunety to try out Linux (ubuntu)
Now i must say... i want to learn more... Will have to do some research on how to partition and dual boot (have any links?)
thank you very much for your help. I plan on folowing this thread
(sorry for english spelling, im french speaking)
-
Nice! I'll give that a try

Welcome to club. Remember, it's not an addiction and we can stop any time we want. My first recommendation is to look through the Ubuntu users forums. There's lots to do. As for setting up a multiboot, it's actually pretty easy.
Step 0: Backup everything on the machine you hold dear, make recovery disks etc.
Step 1: boot from a USB key / live CD.
Step 2: fire up gparted / partition editor (system -> administration -> disk partitioning tool or something like that.
Step 3: Shrink the windows partition, leaving a dozen or so Gigs free.
Step 4: run the install icon in the live Ubuntu CD / Usb key. Tell the install application when it asks to use the free space on the drive. Just say yes / default to most everything else.
Step 5: Make a sandwich and wait. -
I was just about to recommend that. I'm glad you got the problem all sorted out. In my experience, this is a good laptop at a great price. And now that Acer is changing its direction in the market, the 3820TG may be the last of its kind.
-
Either that, or they will make the 3820/3830 series available in North America. Not that it matters to me, I live in Singapore
but I'm sure many of us here would have preferred to have gotten it directly from retailers at home rather than Germany/Canada

Well if anybody like me had downloaded the catalyst 11.3 and after installinging it in normal method(discrete mode) and found a bad surprise. The solution is don't install catalyst 2 at first hand don't check it in the box. I have downloaded VGA_AMD_8.741.1.6_W7x86W7x64_A from acer4820tg support page it also suits our laptop as well and you don't have to install intel hd graphics driver after installing it.
1. On switchable mode install VGA_AMD_8.741.1.6_W7x86W7x64_A
2. On discrete mode install last catalyst version but don't install catalyst 2.0 with it.
3. Return switchable mode. -
We can just install this without switching? How updated is this version from the hybrid on Acer's website?
Cheers. -
This left me without a working ATI driver after installing. Intel worked but trying to switch to performance graphics gave me a blank screen. I've reverted back to the previous hybrid release. -

setPLL .lut request
Wondering if a 3820TG owner with setfsb would like to generate a setPLL .lut file for these systems? Then others could overclock for free
-
Hey guys, I got an SSD for my Acer 3820TG and it died after just 4 days in the machine. I guess I was unlucky.
Has anyone updated bios/firmware/something third before putting in an SSD drive in their precious machine?
Yours sincerely,
svanebjerg. -
i tryed it onces but allways gaves me system freezes !!
so i donate for SetFSB ....
if someone else has more luck , pls share and i put it into 3820tray
its free and switch faster
-
Completely second nando4's motion. Recently used SetPLL with my M11xR2 to extend its OC capabilities, and I could not be happier with the software. Just ordered a 3820tg last week, and if somebody can help make SetPLL compatible with the 3820tg, you'll be a god in my eyes
The clock generator for the 3820tg is the same as that for the M11xR2, if I understand correctly from the SetFSB website:
ASUS G73JH (ASUS G53JW/N71JV/G73JH/G73JW/G75JH/U45JC/UL30JT/UL80JT/U36JC/N53JQ-SX070V, DELL Alienware M17x-R2/M11x-R2, Acer TimelineX 1830T/3820T/4820TG/Aspire 4745G/5745G, Sager NP8120, Toshiba L640, HP G42T) -
Would using setPLL to overclock still cause the same issues in 3D performance that SetFSB does?
-
Did you really notice a performance drop when using setFSB & ThrottleStop (raising the tdp)?
I didn't compare. I acheived to keep a constant 22*160 in charge (~3500Mhz) on my 480m (max temp ~92°C). My games being more GPU dependent & limited, I didn't notice a performance boost either.
Best wPrime 1024 (4 threads) score : 513s.

Hi, does any of you own the i5-480m/6550 model?
Could you tell me how long does the battery last when browsing internet (power saving , brightness at 20-30%) and when playing a standard definition video (wifi off, power saving and brightness at 50-60%)?
Notebookcheck review says 5h while whatching videos and less than 4h while browsing... is that possible?? -
I couldn't tell you, didn't test, I own this version of the 3820TG, but from my experience on battery (6-cell), I guess these values are good if not less than reality.
For me it is normal that browsing consume more power than watching a video. Wifi On + network traffic + multi-tabs web 2.0 browsing (flash/Jscript/Ajax/Silverlight) uses more resources than watching an sd video. -
Thanks for your kind answer, but why does the 3820TG with ati 5650 and i5-460m scores 4h10m while browsing and 3h48m while watching video? Isn't it strange?
These tests are performed with integrated graphics, so what brings to that inverted result? -
The Wlan card eats a lot power on constant data streams.(Youtube, Audio streams)
The most pages are using scripts and all of them has to compiled before the first usage. -
hi guys
i think we should start a new thread urging Acer to update all the drivers on the web site most of them are a year old already!
and we all post our remarks there maybe that will send a message to them -
Good luck with that. Acer's CEO resigned a few days ago. They are much more concerned about how they're going to compete with apple than updating your drivers.
Bronsky
-
They probably won't bother, they already sold the model...
Anyway it doesn't really bother me since drivers nowadays are universal, you can simply source them from other vendors.
The formula for success is actually very simple.
Look Good, Advertise, Control Media, Profit !!! -
I ordered the 3820TG and I'll get it this week.
What are some things you can disable to get the most battery life?
Like disable 1 core on the CPU, disable the ATI card with the bios mod, disable USB ports, etc. -
User Retired 2 Notebook Nobel Laureate NBR Reviewer
-
I pretty much disabled Windows to get max battery life. I get 4.5 to 5 hours max in windows, and with Ubuntu 10.10 and acpi_call to turn off the ATI, I get 5.5 to 6.0 hours handily.
-
With Intel selected in BIOS, I get 5.5 W in lowest brightness with wireless off.
With wireless on and browsing sites like this, I get about 8.0 W in Google Chrome, with medium brightness.
5.5 W means 64.8 / 5.5 = 11 hours battery life
8.0 W means 64.8 / 8.0 = 8 hours battery life
I don't have anything disabled, everything is 100% stock. You just need to know how to optimise Win 7, like disabling Aero, Indexing, and so on.
------------------------------------
Has anyone tried putting a slim or manually cut / sanded D-SUB VGA cable, while there is a HDMI cable plugged in? There is no reason why could we not do 2x external displays on the AMD card. I think its just the spacing issue. -

The past few months I decided to get a laptop. It will be my first one, at 32 years old lol...I feel like a kid again and it's great! A couple years ago I built myself an I7 rig at home for 3d content creation and video/audio editing. I've been loving it, although these days it serves more as a gaming machine.
Well I work graveyard shift at a Hotel and there isn't much to do. The pc's here really suck and a change of management has increased a lot of the security on the machines so it makes the nights even longer when I can't do things like update divx to watch more recent video tutorials.
So now that the time came...Bills caught up and payed off, things are looking up and I've been able to get some money put aside. Been doing a ton of research over the past month and after crawling having scoured the web and crawled through its dirtiest, darkest alleys I came to settle on the 3820TG-6829 canadian model (LX.RAC02.041)
There were some comparable prices around the web, and ultimately I found one for sale at a local store here in Montreal called Ordicentre. Well they're pretty shifty so I asked a competitor with a much better reputation to price-match it and they did. I just got the confirmation after getting up a few hours ago. An official quote and a message saying it will be available for pickup Thursday morning at opening time.
All that WOT to say thank you to everyone in this thread and other similar threads here. A special thank you to Bronsky, whose persistence eventually convinced me to go with this model, although the bilingual keyboard for me is a really good thing as I work in 2 languages interchangeably.
These forums, as well as notebookcheck, had a huge part to do with my decision and I'm glad you guys were here to help me, even though you had no idea what you were doing
So while I don't actually own it yet, I will in a day and a half and I figured this would be a great place for my first post
Cheers -
Congratulations and welcome to the forum.

Hi guys,
I'm having a big problem with my acer and i'm just really desperate, because i need my laptop for work and don't have time to fix it every day.
What is the problem?
The WiFi.
Every time i hibernate the pc or just turn it off and on again, the wifi does not work, even tough it is turned on in Launch Manager (that i reinstalled like 50 times in the last 3 days...) Whole wifi connection behaves really strange in the last day, I notice I havent made any hardware changes or anything. I tried to reinstall the wifi card drivers, which says, that the wifi card is ejected from the pc.. Which is really strange, but the device manager say the same thing: It shows only Ethernet Controller and no WIFI card.
I found some video on youtube: YouTube - Acer Aspire Timeline 3820TG WLAN issue. Faulty hardware? from some guy who has basically the same issue. What would you recommend to do? Reinstalling the system and drivers? Or making the complain to the seller?
Thank you
-
The first thing I would do is disable ePower if you have not uninstalled it or done a clean install. Epower turned my wifi card off, no matter what I would do. If that doesn't work, you're probably stuck with returning the unit to the depot for a new wifi card.

hi,
witch wifi modul is better the atheros or the on from my 1810t. i'll sell my 1810t an maybe i can change the wifi card before
-
Care to explain how you optimize it?
-
The owners have tested the Intel 6200, the Broadcomm and the Atheros seems to be the best of the 3. I would keep that in the 3820TG. My Atheros has nearly twice the range of the Broadcomm in my first unit.

My intel 6200 has almost double range of the broadcom that was factory installed in my 3820TG.

Just got my replacement 3820TG as in signature. The gpu clocks like crazy, furmark up to 880Mhz!
Memory not that good, maxes out at 1020Mhz. The CPU is a decent clocker, without HT and turbo I get 3.3GHz loaded on both cores. I got this new machine in exchange for the i5-450/HD5650, so I'm happy.
Next up is to solder on the pci socket and put on some decent TIM on GPU/CPU and ramsinks. This little fella gets HOT!
-
I have never really done much gaming with my 3820TG other than to test a few games out on the 13.3" display, but last month my desktop Asus P6T motherboard died. While waiting for it to be repaired (it's a long story but I'm done with Asus), I took my 3820TG home and hooked it up to my 24" LG, Sidewinder KB and played some Medal of Honor. I was incredibly impressed. With a direct ethernet hookup and all CPU/GPU set to factory clocks, the game played nearly as smooth as my I7-930/HD5870. I played for hours over the weekend and CPU temps never climbed over 79C (although the fans were working hard). The longer I own this little marvel, the more I am impressed with it.
