    @TehSuigi

I was playing on wow last night with everything on high except shadows at around 35-60 FPS (Vsync on) after around 15mins of gaming it happend, my FPS dropped to early 20's, straight to the CPU temp which was showing around 56c. Undervolted the CPU to 1.2v on 2.0ghz and re tested, it then settled at around 46-49c with no more slow downs :) I did wonder why the CPU stepped at such a low temp but as you said the laptop is not reading at the correct temps on the thermals.

Interesting find on the BIOS i will update that tonight to see what impact it has on the CPU without running RM clock. Maybe it will also sort the fan speeds out to, it only seems to have two speeds. Hmmm i really would not mind if the fan actualy did make some noise to keep the temps stable "more tweaks to do".

Another question: Noticed the sound on the 6920 appears to be spread more to the right hand speaker and the bass is a little too high. Can someone tell me how i set to 2.1 using the Sub woofer (speaker booster)? I can only find stereo and 5.1, bit confuesing at the moment as ive only just got this lappy.

    Coops,
I'd recommend going to read the topic I made on the BIOS update.
As for the sound, setting the speakers to Stereo will automatically kick in the Tuba bass booster (Realtek's drivers handle routing the sound). 5.1 will give you simulated 5.1, however.

Anyone know how to disable shared memory on the 9500M GS? causing choppy video lag in my games. Im almost certain it as that as my last card ATI did it untill i disabled it using ATI tool. I guess Nvidia have something to do this right?

The TurboCache is only activated when you've used up all of your 512MB of graphics memory. I don't believe there's a way to force it off.

What brightness do you guys have it set at? When you press the epowering technology button at the top right corner, and then double click the battery icon a window pops up and you can change the brightness level. At max is 100%. What percentage you guys have it set at?

    @ TehSuigi

Im getting some kind of weird video lag when playing wow in outside spaces, i'm pretty sure its the shared mem kicking in but not 100% yet. the frames instead of being _________ are ------------- very little kinks that are consistant.

GuardianFlash I have mine set to around 90% but you should put it as low as poss on battery if you want it to last. The screen is one of the biggest drains on the battery.

UPDATE: Think i may have come accross a fix for the wow issue. Within the folder "timingMethod" needs to be set to either 1 or 2 not the default 0 which seems to be stepping between the cores on the CPU causing little lag spikes. Will try this one tonight :)

Mike28, welcome to the forums! Stick around a while, it's comfy here. :)

Anyways, the PM965 chipset that the Acer Aspire 6920G is based on can only use up to DDR2-667 RAM modules. If you put in something faster (like DDR2-800), the RAM module will clock down to the chipset's maximum speed.

So if you do get the DDR2-800 modules, your Aspire won't explode. You'll just be spending more money than you need to.

    Me?
-Updated BIOS to version 1.10 to 1.06.
-Switched CPU from stock T5550 to T8300.
-Applied Arctic Silver 5 to CPU and GPU cores.
    -Upgraded RAM to 4GB.
-Changed OS to Windows Vista Ultimate.
-Overclocked GPU using new driver set

Somehow, LCD brightness is rather insignificant in comparison. ;)
(fwiw, mine's set to 100% on AC, and 10% on battery)

Arctic silver is a like a thermal putty that is applied between the CPU and heat sink to help reduce heat. It normally comes in a small tube like a suringe and is very easy to apply.

Might be an idea to check some videos on you tube on how to apply so you get an idea on how much to use etc.

Ok guys as you know i have only had my 6920G for a week now and in a word i LOVE it :)

All is sweet especialy after the BIOS update as recomended by TehSuigi (good job man).

One final thing remains for me to do is overclock my GPU, im looking for some stable clocks to improve my FPS however i dont want to squeeze every last frame from the card making it too hot just a gentle increase.

I have downloaded Riva tuner which i dont have much experiance with, found the clock settings page so im ready to start overclocking this card. My GPU (9500M GS) seems to be at around 52-54c when gaming or there abouts, can someone please give me some ideas on sensible clock speeds and what temps i should be looking at to keep things safe?

I'm currently using the latest drivers from the Nvidia web site for my card.

Sorry if this has been explained before but this thread is very BIG now.

    Thanks, Coops

    Hello everyone!!

Been quite happy to end up finding this forum and especially this particular thread! Glad to join the community :)

I've bought this lappy about 6 months ago now and been quite happy with it so far...!

Couple days ago I've been running into some iastor.sys errors (event ID 9 in my event log : The device \Device\Ide\iaStor0 did not respond within the timeout period.) Basically it makes my computer freeze for a couple seconds before starting back again...I had the same errors in the first days when I bought the computer but at that time I had to reboot completely, I then downgraded from vista to XP and I thought it fixed it but I guess not since I'm now running into the same errors again...Well, I think it as something to do with the Intel® Matrix Storage Manager (RAID or something) because I installed a new version of the driver a couple days ago, do I even need those I don't have a clue what they are for...!

    Thanks all! Matt

@Coops: I'm on 179.28, pulling 625/1250/450 for 1 hour stable on ATiTool, and I'm thinking I can go further from there. Try those out, and TEST TEST TEST for stability.

@Guardian: Updating the BIOS is a very tricky thing to do - DON'T unless you know EXACTLY what you're doing. I made a post about it back here.

    temp max 60°C.
the core clock can be raised even more, the mem is @ its max, if i rais it more i get an driver error and a reboot is necessary.

it plays all the latest games, fc2, cod5, burnout @ high with ease and crysis @ med/high.

Thanks for the settings guys, very helpfull to help me find a sweet spot on the card.

Still having trouble with a Game i love to play "world or warcraft" I have to enable "reduce lag input" or i just get constant spikes of lag when moving but it kills my fps sooooo bad when i put this one to fix it. My friend has the 9400M GS card which runs wow without "reduce lag input" it works perfect for him which i find odd.

    Anyone play this game here?

I have noticed when i keep AA low its not as bad but still there, no other settings or resolutions make any differance what so ever :(

Mt friend uses the AMD dual core but thats the only real differance. Any idea or experiances would be helpfull to me. It was suggested that the HD sound maybe casuing this but i have disabled this, no differance.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

I'm interested in buying a Acer 6920G, which has the following spec:

Display Size 16" Maximum Resolution 1920x1200 WUXGA HDTV Full HD (1080p)
Intel Processor Name Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 Clock frequency 2.0GHz Cache 1 MB FSB 667MHz
Internal memory Internal memory size 4,096 MB Generation DDR2 Dual Channel
Hard drive (s) Total Capacity 250GB Number of Hard Drives 1 RPM 5400rpm Connection type IDE
Graphics Manufacturer NVIDIA Model NVIDIA® GeForce® 9500M GS Memory 512MB VRAM VGA yes DVI yes TV out no HDMI yes

Before I commit to this, I was wondering if I can upgrade the processor to maybe a P8400 or higher?

    Many thanks.

    Hi Wayne,

I'm almost certain the CPU can be upgraded on this laptop. Read back on this thread im sure someone popped a 2.5Ghz CPU in one from the 1.83Ghz standard.

GPU can overclock well using Riva Tuner if you want to do this for any reason.

Oh little tip for you when or if you buy one, update your BIOS as there has been problems with the old version slowing down the cpu too early to cool it down. Personaly (including bios update) i have lowered the voltage which makes a BIG differance as i game for hours and hours :)

No, you cannot upgrade those. Different chipsets (that should have a P965, which doesn't support the newer higher FSB). The best you can upgrade to is the T9500. Depending on the cost, it might not be worth it to upgrade as it might not yield a boost in performance. What are you planning on using your computer for?

I will be using my laptop for mainly music production, playing the odd game and watching movies while I'm abroad.

I was thinking of getting a T8300 in the future, or cost wise a T9400 or higher.

I placed the order as it looks a good laptop for the price, so hopefully it will be delivered tomorrow. :D

Wayne, you can't do the T9400 or any Core 2 with a 1066 MHz FSB.
The T8300 really is the sweet spot for price vs. performance - I did the upgrade myself.
And since you'll be doing music production, you'll be able to encode and edit audio that much faster.

TehSuigi, thanks for the advice and the T8300 looks like the way to go.

The laptop arrived today and looks lovely. I'm in the process of backing up my old laptop then will start on the Acer.

I've got a 320gig 7200rpm laptop hard drive I want to put in the new Acer and was wondering if it is easy enough to swap drives?

Yup - just remove the battery and power cord, take off the "buttplate" as I call it (the main panel on the bottom of the laptop), and tug out the hard drive (should be in its own foil casing). Unscrew the foil casing off the old hard drive, put the new one in it, and reverse the process.

    Hi Guys,

I found a problem with "slide show" where you can view pictures in your pictures folder not the screen saver as a slide show. If you click on "slide show" you will get an error, "Get current window failed"!!! Doh!!

To fix this: ( i found this not my fix)

Click on the Windows start symbol Click on All Programs - Accessories - Run Type regedit into the open box and click OK Under Computer in the Registry Editor click in turn to open each of the keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions If the Key "Blocked" does not exist along with "Approved" and "Cached" then right click on "Shell Extensions" and select New - Key Give the Key the name "Blocked" (but without the quotes) Right Click on the Key "Blocked" and select New - String Value In the value name of the key enter "{29FF7AB0-BE34-4992-A30B-53A9D86EE239}" without the quotes Double click on the new value name and in the Value data enter "" Close the Registry.

This is something to do with AcerSeurity but not sure why.

    Have fun :)

finally got a bit of spare time to fit the 9600M. no probs fitting, only 10mins. fired up and screen is showing 256 mb vram (ad said 512) and 'engineering release - not for prodution use'.
acronis os loader is showing thick black lines around screen so wrong resolution. started vista 64 and logged in. still wrong screen size. loaded same driver, 179.48, restarted 2 times and now fullscreen 1920X1080 :D :D :D :D :D
Info says 9600M GS 256MB although I thought I bought GT and 256  still it is working. also got nvidia message about reduced voltage and performance cut. Did same for my basic Server 2008 and no probs. XP would not load, only blinking cursor. Did a clean install of XP 32, (SP3 lit version) and fired up a treat with included 180.48 driver.
3DMark (standard test, nothing changed, resolution 1280x1024) on my main Vista 64 (loaded up with apps) was 4752, Server 2008 (basic) was 4768, XP 32 was 4897.
Bad news is temp sensor is not working on any os, any suggestions?
Also suggestions for better scores, drivers/config changes welcome.
note, i have only just noticed that 3dMark scores given in various places are at different resolutions which will (obviously) vary the scores. can we standardise these?

Hey everyone, just wondering if people could help me out. my laptop seems to be overheating very fast and then just shuts off. I have noticed that it happens more commonly when I play games, especially spore. According to the system requirements the 6920g is good enough to support spore so i'm not sure what the problem is exactly. is there any one that can help me solve the problem of the overheating and shutting off? note that when i say over heating it gets really hot including the ac adapter and the whole surface underneath. Thanks in advance and hopefully we can sort this out.

Maybe the fan and the copper fins are obstructed, you should clean it and if have enough confidence in yourself apply Artic Silver 5 in the CPU and GPU.
Also you should try undervolting (mine is undervolted @ 1.0000V and CPU running @ 46º at heavy load) see the undervolting guide.

I use it on a desk trying to minimalize the heat, never use it on blankets and sheets, and rarely on my lap. what exactly does undervolting do? and definitely don't have enough confidence to apply arctic silver 5. I am currently out of my home country for a few months so i don't want to do anything that may jeopardize me being without my laptop.

Sounds like something is faulty with your laptop. I'm a Gamer and not once has the underside become Hot, warm maybe but defo not hot.

Can you describe where the heat is coming from? For example centre of the laptop underneath or top left etc. Just trying to work out which component is creating the heat.

I just use a small cardboard box to rest the laptop on my bed so that the covers dont block the vents, also sometimes i have it on my lap, but again nothing gets hot just warm.

Oh can you hear your fan?? When i game it is noticable after around 5 mins playing, maybe that could have gone faulty.

Dont worry about your AC adaptor they do get very very hot just keep it off the carpet :)

the heat is coming from underneath the laptop in the top left, where the fan is. the area that heats up is about the size of my palm. and also the bottom of my screen where the fan is located that area seems to get hot as well.

one thing i should have mentioned earlier, could be the problem is that i am using a ac adapter converter because I am out of the country. Before leaving I called acer and they said that it is okay to use my ac adapter that came with the laptop and just to get a converter. so maybe that can
contribute to the problem but acer said it should be fine.

hope this info helps you a bit to solving my problem.

Right so in that respect it does not appear to be a malfuction as the heat is coming from the correct area of the laptop. I'm guessing being out of the country you maybe in a hot location? The Bottom left side of the screen will get warm as the fan blows onto the screen on that side. Is it getting hot as in you cant touch it or just very warm? Most likey cause is either your AC adaptor is spewing out too much voltage which maybe unbalanced in some countries. Acer are right to say it should be ok as the internals of the AC adaptor will step up/down the voltage, you just need a plug convertor. Now then my AC adaptor only gets very hot when gaming so is it hot when its idle?? Not the best idea but try playing your game on full power mode on Battery for as long as you can "dont let the battery get too low" and see if the problem remains if the battery can hold on long enough, this will prove/disprove a voltage problem (keep checking the heat).

Normally laptops only shut down or cut off if the CPU reaches very high temps, which i find hard to believe in your case as these laptops normally slow down when they hit a certain temp in order to cool themselfs.

Ok another option would be to check you CPU temps by downloading "RM clock utility" use the .exe one incase you dont have winrar http://cpu.rightmark.org/download.shtml

Dont worry its not too complicated just click on the monitoring tab to view the temps and make sure that no profiles are set by RM clock just use max performace on the Acer side first.

Next step is to undervolt which has been mentioned but we can come to that later once we have worked out what your problem is.

coops thanks so much so far i have d/l the clock utility and later on when i have some time to game i will try playing full power with out the ac adapter and i shall report back. also i am in a warmer climate, but it's currently not too hot, avg temp is 20 degrees which is similar to my summer back home if not below, and when i got it in the summer i didn't seem to have this problem. the hot i'd say is hot not warm, i understand you will at all times usually feel some heat, but this is noticeable. and if i remember it is when i game i believe and sometimes the adapter gets hot for movies. i'll try to take note over the next little while try to give you some more details, along with my report on playing games with batteries. once again thanks for the help so far.

so interesting thing happened i played games running on battery and no over heating at all, didn't even get hot. so i think that is my problem the converter. Can anyone explain what would cause it to overheat when I use the converter, even though it is the correct voltage?

I tested mine last night as i have not really checked the heat from the back left. Gamed for 5 hours haha and it was actualy pretty cool so im guessing yours should be the same even on AC.

Did you have the same problem at home or just in this country? The AC adaptor has a volt range of 100v - 240v which is then stepped down to 19v 90W for your laptop. Its possible that the internals on the AC adaptor are not stepping the voltage down correctly causing too much voltage to go to the laptop creating excesive heat (its overloading).

My other thought is that Inside the laptop is the charging board which maybe faulty causing excessive heat to the internels.

If it only happens in the country you have traveled to then my guess is faulty transformer, maybe they have unstable voltage or maybe the adaptor you are using could be the problem.

What type of adaptor or you using to convert the plug? Is it a 2 pin live that of EU and America?

Hi guys wonder if anyone here has the 3650 graphics card on their 6920g. I wanted to find out if the memory on that card is ddr3 or ddr2. I saw a spec list at independant seller which states ddr3 but can't find confirmation. Cheers
