If you're looking for the latest model, get a 5930G or 6930G/6935G.
Those are running on the latest Centrino platform with better graphics cards.

I'd contact Acer - sounds like you do have a genuinely broken speaker.
As for the 9500M GS, I had similar issues, but traced it back to my CPU overheating. I know it doesn't make much sense, but if the CPU can't process game data quickly enough, the program does slow down.
Try undervolting using the guide here on NBR.

My solution for the 9500M GS was to use an old driver. I hope for you tehsuigi solution will work on yours if yo keep it.

Come on mat, you went with an older driver just to be able to overclock. :p
Actually, I'm intrigued - what are your stock SM2.0 and SM3.0/HDR scores in 3DMark06?

my 3dmark was 3511, i'll do a test. But even if I changed to overclock, it did solve my problem. My guess is that since that driver got out in the same time that nvidia discovered the faulty gpu, they locked overclocking in the driver and also added underclocking to be sure less would break. Brb in a couple of minute

    Edit:
    3dmark: 3502
    SM2: 1411
    HDR: 1351
    CPU: 1523

Ookay, looks like your driver is worse at SM2, but better at HDR.
    Not by much, though.
    Thanks, Mat!

I've rarely gone above 70 degrees on my GPU in my system - quite the cool runner.
That may change once I remove the heatsink and all its heatpads for the CPU swap.

AS5 will certainly be going anyplace where heat pads aren't used, in replacement of whatever thermal paste was there before.
But if there's a large gap between heatsink and heat source, it'll stay heatpads.

Ok, so I'm having a little problem with my laptop, and it was briefly mentioned early on in this thread, but I didn't see any response to it.

I restarted my notebook because it was running a little slow, and now when it loads up windows, it doesn't show anything on my screen. There's no display whatsoever.

What's weird, is that it shows the whole acer bootup as soon as you turn on the power, and it even shows the part when windows is loading and it had the progress bar, but as soon as it would go any further (Say into the login screen) the display goes completely black, and I can't see anything.

What's even more weird, is that I can use the fingerprint scanner to log in, and I can access some of my shared folders from another computer on the network, so to me it seems the notebook is WORKING fine, it's just not displaying anything. But I don't know if the screen itself died, as it will show the acer loading screen, and the windows loading screen.... Do I need to send my unit to Acer, or is there something I can do myself to fix this?

i ran into the same problem when i was updating my drivers... try to enter safe mode before windows loads... it should boot fine into safe mode.. then sort out the video drivers from there. I was able to fix it by rolling back the drivers, uninstalling properly, then installing new drivers.. hope this helps

Hello all! A bought an acer 6920G. At the first 3 weeks everything was good, all games run on good performance. But about 1 week everything changed. Bad performance , slow gaming. Call of duty 2 with special cfg ran on 250 fix fps..No cod 2 runs on 50-60 fps... Other games are slow too. Can't play at this time.. I have no virus. A put back te original VGA driver , but nothing changed. I do not know what the is this.. So I want the reinstall the system. This is my first notebook , so my quastion is: How can I reinstall the vista home premium?

Well, do you want to restore to factory default or do a clean install of Vista?
For the former, you should have burned your recovery discs on your first boot. If not, load up eRecovery and do that now. Then, back up your data and reboot with the recovery DVD in your system.

For a clean install, you'll need a Vista DVD from somewhere. Thankfully, you should be able to activate it using the key on the bottom of your system.

Hmm, that's the weird thing, is I didn't update any drivers or anything, it was just a normal restart of the notebook, so I'm not sure which drivers I should even try to be rolling back?
I have tried booting into safe mode, but unlike when I boot regularaly, I can't sign in. The screen comes up fine, I can see the login screen, but my keyboard doesn't work, and the touchpad doesn't work either. I can hit the power button, and it powers down fine (Unlike when it's regularaly booting windows, I have to hold the power button to turn it off).

Back up factory 2dvd (I do not know what is this), and utilities I burned out. I want a full system reinstall, with formating , but I have no Vista. So , I need a vista? But why? Acer have a secret particion (10gb), where is the vista and utilities too. I wanna to load that and formating, and reinstall everything. Is it inpossible? And have you any idea why running games on low fps? Saturday I was playing in grat performance COD 2 fix 250fps, sunday I turned my notebook on , and start playing , and I saw something is very very wrong... 50-60 FPS ,COD2, in 800x600 and DX7... That's funny... Thanks for the fast reply.

Proteus, those recovery DVDs you burned will set your system back to the way it was when you got it, and those were burned using the Vista image on the hidden partition you mentioned.
If you want a clean formatting and reinstallation, you WILL need a Vista DVD. How you get that is up to you (I know torrents exist, but I do not advocate that).

As for the gaming performance drop, I have no idea why that is. Call Acer Support to see if it's a possible hardware failure. It could be overheating of the GPU, off the top of my head.
Actually, I just thought of something - were you plugged into wall power when you were having gaming problems?

And no, the fact that your CPU is running at 1.0 GHz instead of 2.0 is NOT what the problem is. It's called SpeedStep, and it's an Intel technology that allows your processor to slow down and save power when it's not being used. If you started a CPU-intensive task, it would probably bounce back up to full speed.
It also depends on your ePower settings - were you on Balanced, Performance or Power Saver?

Ooookay.... So now I booted up my notebook like I normally would, and still no display on the screen. But I now tried hooking it up to an external monitor, and it picture shows up on the monitor perfectly fine! I sign in, but my trackpad and keyboard don't work at all on the notebook, so I plug in a USB mouse, and now my mouse works. So I'm not sure if there's anything that I can fix myself, it seems to be something very very messed up with my notebook, and I'll probably have to send it to Acer.

Unless you guys know of any way/anything that I can do to resolve this issue myself? Like I previously mentioned, I don't think there's anything that I could possibly do, sounds to me like something has fried or broken inside.

Well at least on the bright side I can now transfer my stuff off, and not lose anything! :p

The Acer Chaser has dug up another intriguing treat from the dregs of the Acer FTP!
I noticed that there are a wide variety of Nvidia drivers available on the site for other models, and decided to examine them to see if they're compatible with the 6920G's GeForce 9500M GS (mine's got a DEV_ of 0405 and a SUBSYS_ of 01461025. You can see if yours matches through Device Manager).

And after poking around in a few INFs, I found out that these have the 9500M GS listed!
176.26: 32-bit and 64-bit from the Acer Euro FTP, listed under the Aspire 6935
175.97: 32-bit and 64-bit from the Acer PanAm website, listed under the Aspire 4930G. Also available on the Acer Euro FTP for the same, for those who prefer that site.

Anyone willing to try them out?
I won't have a chance to dick around with my system's configuration until my new CPU lands here. Then, projects and time permitting, I'll do a buttload of 3DMark06 benchmarks to see which is best.
I'll be updating this post further with findings as I get 'em.

EDIT: OK, I've found at least three others - 174.90, 175.90 and 176.20. Unfortunately, the Acer Euro FTP seems to be truncating my downloads for me, so no luck in researching them as of yet.

HI just got myself one of these machines after looking for a machine for a while that would suit my budget but return a reasonable amount of decent gaming capability to accompany me when i travel away from home with my job. I have to say that i am quite pleased with my purchase so far and it more than meet all my entertainment needs however one thing i can not get to grips with is i have puchased Far Cry 2 and while it plays quite well on the machine it always has a toolbar on the screen. the problem never existed when i firts installed the game but i can not seem to remove it any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance ( bit of a dummy on the pc gaming thing as normally a console gamer)

Well, you can provide us a screenshot. That way, we can figure it out.
Hit the "PrtSc" button on the top of your keyboard, four keys from the right edge.
That will copy whatever's on your screen to the clipboard. From there, open Paint, hit Ctrl+V to paste it in, then save and upload that image to Imageshack or Photobucket or whatever.

Hate to doublepost, but it looks like 176.20 can also be used for the 6920G's GeForce 9500M GS. It's listed on the Acer Euro FTP under the Aspire 6930. Again, once I get a chance to fool around with my laptop, expect benchmarks.

EDIT: 175.90 too! It's listed under the Aspire 5920 on the Euro FTP.

The ones I'm plucking off are from Acer themselves, so one would assume that they have the WHQL certificates required to keep Blu-ray playback.

The ones from Matmat's link with a green icon are WHQL'd.
And it looks like there's a few that I missed in that link!

EDIT: Oh, and 174.90 from the Euro FTP's Aspire 7730 section is also compatible.

    hi
    I had a similar issue.
yesterday I turned it off as always, today I powered on but it doesn´t recognize the following items:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=26830&stc=1&d=1226597627

The LCD is working, but not the keyboard (and shortcuts), touchpad and sound card.

    Can you help me?

I come again to request this big, big, big favor: can someone make me a copy of his PQSERVICE partition and his MBR (with Acronis True Image, for the best)? Someone with 6920G and Vista Ultimate (x64 would be fantastic).

P.S. I have my recovery DVDs, but I want to restore the F10 function, for some testing purposes.

CQSTELUSH, could you please send me an older version of 6920G bios, such as 1.02 or 1.04? I updated my bios, then my realtek HD audio works badly even I restored the system by recovery DVD. You know what I mean, once modified the audio drive, you will have a very bad sound quality, like in the can. my emailbox is [email protected], thanks so much for your help.

tbulls, I've sent you the last 2 BIOSes used by my 6920G. 1.03 and 1.07. I've explained better on the e-mail sent to you.

matmat07, the BIOS D2D recovery function.

    Thank you very much, pal.
It's tuba problem, I'll try older version of bios sent by you.
Sound driver does not work pefectly, I am really confused.
I've browsed many threads on this forum, and I think some people do have the same problem.
