Great idea silentjay. What an excellent oportunity that would be for us Canadians to get the 3820tg with a i5 and a 5650. Can't wait to see what happens here in the next month!
-
I've also gone ahead and contacted Infonec - the only Canadian retailer (last I checked, US retailers didn't carry this either) selling the Asus u30jt with an i5 configuration... Maybe they can get their hands on this unique config too. I wants my beefed-up TimelineX!
-
u mean the 30jc?
i dont see the u30jt on the infonec site.
i think ncix.com would be the best to getting imports in
they usually get a lot of stuff upon request -
Okay everybody, here's the store that is willing to help us out :
The model's he can import have Windows 7 Chinese language installed
and also have some Chinese characters on the Keyboard. Also the
models he is able to get only come with 2GB RAM, but you do get
the ATI 5650 GPU
Ask to talk to "CP" at the Broadway location of Expc Computer Technology computer
store. Tell him "Cory" sent you
Scrapped the group order idea to keep things from getting too messy. Hopefully this post
follows the guidlines set out at notebookreview.com, if not let me know
and I will edit it accordingly.
Good luck everyone, and make sure to thank CP too for his efforts.

EDIT : CP at EXPC said that the Core i5-450M are available now too, however supply is very scarce.

Awesome! I emailed them last night at around 6PM EST, and got a reply at 1AM this morning
I asked to confirm hard drive size, warranty coverage, whether a larger battery was available, and whether the unit had the 5650. If all checks out, and he can ship to Toronto, i'm in business!! -
let us know what they can do for you silentjay..... I would need shipping to Alberta and want the i5 and 5650 as well. What price they quoted you as well would be great so i can see what i'm looking at spending.
-
Great I like how this thread has opened up options for everyone =]
-
I have my 3820tg posted here in case anyone is interested : http://forum.notebookreview.com/not...ook-fm997ut-aba-3-year-warranty-640-ship.html
-
Hi everyone. I've been following this thread for a while but wanted to share how I managed to get my 3820tg.
PChome¥þ²yÁʪ« - 3C À]º¶ . Search 3820tg and they will have the 3820tg for 30900 taiwanese dollar (Around 950) plus around 50-60 for shipping. You will have to add in another 2gb of ram to match other versions of this laptop, but the best part of this site is the quality service and quick shipping speed (It literally arrived in 3 days).
Please note, the 450M for 30900 is only available during nighttime in taiwan, as indicated by "夜間特賣", but it seems to be available every night.
Enjoy! -
whispere did this come to north america for u?
-
Yup. To California.
-
Hi whisperer, who is the shipping provider pchome uses? If it wasn't UPS, etc. where you still able to track the shipping?
-
Hey Whisperer did it come with a global warranty and how was the customs etc..... I would like to get it shipped to canada
-
It was usps and I never dealt with customs (I think it's included with the shipping according to the company).
-
The store found by Hardcor is charging $1196+Tax for the i5-450 with 2GB of RAM, or add another $60 for 4GB. This comes with 500GB HD, and the HD 5650.
That price, however is shipped to BC. To come to Toronto, it'd apparently be another $15ish. I'm going to confirm my order with him tomorrow. -
silentjay
hardcor state only the i5-430 not the 450 -
CP at EXPC indicated to me today that the Core i5-450M are available now too, however supply is very scarce.
-
pchome wins. $200 cheaper. From bronsky's speaker account, it seems as though ITW will work. Jump for it!
-
Yah PCHome seems to be the cheaper bet. Looks like they will ship to Canada as well. End up saving around 150.00 after shipping I imagine and that's for the i5-450. But if EXPC can ship it to Edmonton for that price it might be worth a look as they will take care of all the importing and what not.
Whisperer did you have to get an english keyboard or how did it come shipped? OS version as well. -
-
^^ Agreed
-
The keyboard is in a Taiwanese zhuyin layout, which is relatively the same as an American keyboard so a change isn't necessarily needed.
OS does come in Traditional Chinese, so a reinstall might be necessary.
One thing to note is that there was no efficient tracking system for PCHome. When the package arrived, it was listed in their system as still being in Taiwan.
Good luck! -
I'm thinking about buying from PCHome. Is there any way to check the price of shipping? I looked at my cart and got a friend who could read chinese, but he couldn't find any place that lets you check the shipping price.
-
My two biggest concerns would be when the shipment get processed at Canada Customs Border Agency. Is it possible that the shipment will not be allowed into the mail stream due to the lithium type battery restrictions? Also, will Canada Customs add HST + handling fee on top of the declared value? -
You can check shipping after you add to cart “加無購物車”。and click on the flashing shopping cart in the bottom right corner.
It should come out to 1680 NT (50 to 60) depending on Paypal's conversion rate -
If I lived in Canada, I would not use PChome. I know it is cheaper but the odds are that it won't make it in the country. Canada is serious about enforcing the LI Battery ban, the US seems not so concerned. I would pay the extra few bucks and have the unit delivered inside canada by the retailer before shipping to its ultimate destination. You can always use ground transportation once it is in Canada.
Plus, if PChome starts to get a lot of canadian units returned, it will probably do what computeruniverse did and stop shipping to North American altogther.
Bronsky
@whisperer - how many days did it take for you to get your unit? Do you live near a major hub on the west coast (LA or Bay Area?). It came USPS? How was it transported to USPS? Could you see on the shipping manifest? -
-
not sure how greatly that rule is, i think it just on commercial flights..
because i've received two cell phones with the li - battery warnings ont he packages from ebay hong kong, no issues at all, both with fedex -
It took 4 days from when I ordered to get it, which was incredibly fast. I do live near Los Angeles which might have helped.
I believe it went from Taiwanese Post to the USPS.
In regards to the Canada issue, PChome advertises that it ships to 105 countries, of which Canada is included (Says 4-5 day shipping for them). I'd find a friend who can speak Mandarin and call to double check customs. For the US, whatever customs exist were paid for in the shipping.
PChome¥þ²yÁʪ« - ÅU«ÈªA°È might be the link to the shipping your looking for.
Overall, besides the laptop having only 2gb ram, PChome seems a pretty solid way to get a 3820tg into America -
Thanks! Turns out I was looking at the wrong part of the website.
I wanted to get the cheap 450m model (no case), but I don't think that they ship that particular model globally. That leaves me between the i3-330 and the i5-430. Any thoughts? Will there be a noticeable difference for gaming, or will the gpu bottle neck the system anyway? -
I just ordered one via pchome for shipment to Canada (Montreal, QC). Came out to exactly 1080 CAD for the i5-450M shipping included. I'll poste back if and when it gets here.
-
Bronsky -
Bleh. Guess it's the i5 for me. Btw, it it hard replacing the keyboard? It looks a little..dangerous. Do you think that I will have to cut the tabs if it is a normal, non-backlit keyboard?
-
Hmm I going to hong kong tomorrow (i live in vancouver) so hopefully I can just find a store there that has one... Bit nervous buying it out of the country. Windows7 in Chinese, plug end wrong and 220v and wrong keyboard and lack of warranty.... Anything else I need to be aware of?
-
Notebook power adapters are always 110/240V interchangeable.
Warranty is standard 1 year international. -
-
Did the price go up for the 450m model? Its listed as 33900 I thought someone said it was going for 30900 which is a good amount less.
Or am I looking at the wrong one? -
The price is 30900 at night in Taiwan (Which is daytime for America). I didn't know this so I accidentally bought the more expensive version
-
Oh wow, thanks for the info, thats a wierd system they have going on. I guess I'll wait till early morning to order it.
I actually have an envy 14 right now which is nice but the battery life is a little low and the size is bigger then I thought it would be. So I think im going to order one of these.
What are the major complaints about it right now? -
It would be great if PCHome was also available with English translation available. I'd really like to see a step by step ordering process tutorial (with pictures) for easier ordering from PCHome......anybody up for it? -
And for those wondering about SquareTrade, I went ahead and asked them if they can do a warranty on a laptop purchased overseas and this was their response:
-
-
I'm happy pchome seems to be working for some people
Still loving the 3820TG, no problems at all -
@PeterDLai - You have to assume that there will be no warranty. If you hit the wrong person at Acer on the wrong day, you are not covered as the terms of the international travelers warranty do not cover imported units. NO WARRANTY!!!
Not all power adapters are 110/220 but the Acer is.
@RD3 - you will probably not have to cut the tabs if you buy a normal KB. Anybody use a 3820T yet, instead of the 3810T? -
:S I wanna wait to see if biggy gets his unit from PChome, but I also don't want to wait... Decisions, decisions....
Just because he gets his unit also doesn't guarantee that mine will slip through the cracks too... -
hmmm...
TD finally got their 3820T... on sale for $670...
tempted to just spring for that, getting too impatient for the TG...
if only BCB was still available... it'd be a done deal...
-
Bronsky -
^^^ Only problem is, if it gets denied entry into Canada, i'm screwed out of $1000+ right?
