For anyone living in the Vancouver area. I just brought 2 units of the Acer 3820tg-5462G50nks back from Hong Kong. I've posted them on craigslist at the moment.
Acer 3820tg i5-460M, ATI HD 5650 (BNIB)(2 units)
They cost me $950 US for the computer, $200 duties/taxes bringing them into Canada. I'm looking to sell them for ~$1200.
Let me know if any of you are interested in purchasing the laptop.
email me: [email protected]
Cheers
Darren

Not to rain on your sale, but the only difference would be the processor, and paying $350 more for just the processor, it'd be cheaper to upgrade it yourself. Plus the performance difference probably won't justify the pricings. However, it doesn't have the stupid bilinguial Canadian keyboard
-
depends, it also has bluetooth 3.0 and a different LCD screen. Does that justify the price difference...maybe, maybe not, but I know there is only a limited # of these computers floating around, and they are hard to come by. All I know is that I have 2 of these puppies sitting in their boxes waiting for a nice home
-
Looks like my 3820TG is sitting at UPS waiting to be delivered on Monday. To its credit, the purchase was very smooth. I ordered from LU on Tuesday and wired the funds late Tuesday afternoon. The Funds cleared LU's account on Wednesday and the computer shipped that same day. There were no problems or delays in customs.
Eric at LU is not the greatest communicator. I had to call to confirm the initial order, the wire transfer receipt and I had to call to ask for my tracking number.
I'm sure I would have heard from him eventually on the order, funds and tracking number but in a different time-frame. That is really my only gripe. Otherwise, the service was efficient and he was very pleasant to deal with. As soon as the funds cleared his account, the notebook was shipped. This is far better than the 15 days my initial unit was in-transit from Germany.

Did you get one of these for yourself as well? What kind of display does it have?

If you're looking directly at a black screen, can you see a difference in the bottom and top? I used to have a Dell Vostro 1400 and that was by far my biggest gripe; I kinda got used to it but it was still annoying to see a too-dark bottom and a washed-out top (or vice versa, I can't remember).
Also, Bronsky, your total was just 753? I guess they raised the prices then, I'm looking at LU and it's 750.99 for the computer + 38.49 for 3-day shipping to California. -

Why doesnt Cendirect site say what graphics chip it has, so damn annoying. -
And how on earth does the LU computers site NOT have information on whether they ship internaionally in their long shipping FAQ page.
I cant believe how complicated buying this laptop is. From the differentt versions to the actual store. Unbeliavable. -
$750 is the standard price. You get a discount if you pay in cash like payment by wire transfer. 3 Day UPS to NJ was $30.00.

Yah I bought 1, and have 2 more for sale. The display is 13.3'' HD Acer CineCrystal LED LCD. The one that Canada sells is Active Matrix TFT Color LCD.
-
mine says HD LED, got it in canada.

You could send them an email

I also bought one of the Acer AS3820TG notebooks from Lu Computers.
Purchased it from their website on Friday morning, it was shipped later that evening. I expect it to be delivered on Wednesday.
I paid $727.26 + $72.62 UPS Next Day Shipping to Virginia, but unfortunately they sent it via UPS Ground. I sent Lu an email but they haven't responded yet.
Their website price is currently $736.27. Their eBay auction price is currently $788.12.

What's the difference between the Acer CineCrysal LED LCD and the Active Matrix TFT Color LCD? Is one significantly better or brighter than the other?
Unless their descriptions have been copied from somewhere else, these 3 places appear to sell the 3820TG with the CineCrystal display:

Holy bejeesus I have been lurking this thread since the dawn of time.
Here is my dilemma:
I'm from New York
I'm living in France
I'm on business in Shanghai / Hong Kong
Do I:
1. Buy from Canada, Ship to a friend who ships to France?
2. Pick one up in Shanghai / HK?
Chances are I'm moving back to New York in January - but I'm about to throw my netbook out the window.
Wondering if there's a cheap place to get it in HK - the i3 370 one? Or if I can find a decently priced i5 one here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. -
They are all the same display. All 3820TGs have the same type of display. They are 200-220nit displays.
Bronsky
-
Exactly. LED is just backlight technology while TFT Active Matrix is the screen technology. What you have is TFT Active Matrix LCD with a backlight in the form of LED (light emitting diodes)
According to Acer these LCDs are used on 3820T/TG
AUO
13.3" WXGA Glare B133XW01
13.3" WXGA Glare B133XW03
LG
13.3" WXGA Glare LP133WH2-TLA4
13.3" WXGA Glare LP133WH2-TLL1
Samsung
13.3" WXGA Glare LTN133AT18-A01 -
which one is the better display out of these 3 manufacturers?
-
Unfortunately, the quality control seems to vary from unit to unit. I had a great AUO. I will probably have an LG tomorrow.

when you get it let me know which one you like better.

My unit is on the UPS truck for delivery. I should have it this morning.

Hello Everyone!
I am seriously thinking about buying the Acer 3820TG in the US.
I had problems locating a store that sells it, in NY Manhattan.
Can someone please recommend on a well known, reliable store that sells the Acer 3820TG?
I really appreciate the help!
Thanks -
It is not for sale in the US. Only the 4820TG is for sale in the US. You can see them at J&Rs in New York or Microcenter (there is one in North Jersey). All 3820TG's in the US are imported. You can currently get an I3 version from Canadian Retailers or an I5 version from PCHome in Taiwan. There is a listing on the first page of this thread, post #2.

So CENdirect dont accept credit card payments outside of US/Canada. Hilarious. You have to pay by cash transfer. Which im obviously not going to do. One because I dont have that much cash in the bank, but most importantly becuase its not a safe way to buy things, if that laptop doesnt arrive, im not covered. Must be one of the only companies in the world not to accept card payments.
Yet another hurdle in buying this machine. What a strange company Acer are. -
Hi can someone post what model numbers have the LG screen? Thanks.
-
Funny, because LU gives a discount for Cash Transfer payment. The cost is $735CN. Cendirect makes you pay cash and still charges $775? How about paypal?

I gotta admit I'm just a wee bit bummed with LU. I placed my order nearly 24 hours ago and it's still "in processing", even though it's well after noon on Monday. Considering they took my money instantly I was hoping they'd have it out on a truck today
Really I think I've just been spoiled by Newegg since their service is ridiculously awesome.
Also, Bronsky, does your bank not charge a wire-transfer fee? I'm with Bank of America and they would have charged 12 bucks, essentially negating the $16 discount for using cash (when coupled with the hassle of wiring it instead of simply using a card). -
My company has all of its business accounts with TD Bank so we get wire transfers for free. Plus, LU uses the Canadian version of TD.
Do not go by the website. Mine still says "in processing" and my 3820TG arrived today. I had to call Eric for my tracking number. It's worth a call or an email. Ask him when the unit shipped and the tracking #. You might want to read my post about communicating with LU. http://forum.notebookreview.com/6842293-post1554.html You have to be proactive with this company.
BTW ... IT'S HERE!

Hi Bronsky,
I have now received my replacement unit from Cendirect, and this unit came with the AUO display. The first (defective) i3/5650 from Cendirect shipped with the LG monitor (which I think was inferior), so I think it is kind of random which one you will end up getting.
Comparing this one to my previous defect and the i5/5470 from Staples, the keyboard works (which is a big plus over the last i3) and is not as flex-y as the defect, but still more than the 5470. The difference is mostly around the middle of the keyboard, where the 5470 showed virtually no flex while this one shows some minor (but not a problem-level) flex.
Very happy with this thing - hooked it up to a new 24" HD monitor and it looks great - even runs CIV 5 (the only game I really play) in HD on moderate-high settings MUCH faster than my desktop (an E8600 and 9800GTX) and blows the i5/5470 out of the water. -
From Canada, does it have an English keyboard layout?
-
Eric from Lu Computers in Canada told me it had a USA keyboard.
Bronsky, How is your Acer from Lu working out for you?
Did you have to pay a brokerage fee for importing from Canada to the US?
I just talked to Eric from Lu and he said I won't have to pay any extra fees.
Jabberwhacky, I paid on Friday morning and Lu shipped that evening. I paid for UPS Express shipping but they used UPS Ground. I called and they told me to call them back on Thursday when it's delivered to get my refund. -
Yes, it has a Fr/Eng bi-lingual keyboard. There is one difference from the standard US KB.

No customs fees (thanks to NAFTA). i got my unit today. It has an AUO 322C (same as my old unit). I was very pleased with the last one I had and the blacks seem to be even deeper on this one. It looks great.
I took the Original HD out and put my old one in and the unit fired right up. I have to get some files off the unit before I do a clean install. I put the original drive in an external case to get the drivers and apps that I will need off it.
I would guess I'll have it set up soon. I will probably take this KB out and put my old one in here, without hooking up the backlighting for now. The processor seems fast enough (for now
).
Delivery took 3 travel days from Canada to South Jersey. It sat at UPS over the weekend.
I'm very pleased so far. Everything looks like it is operating properly and I may have an OC'able unit (at least I don't get a PLL error). I'll see later just how OC'able it is. For now, the first job is to complete the clean install.
Good luck with your unit.

I took your advice and gave him a call, but unfortunately he said it was in fact still processing. I'll just wait till Wednesday or Thursday and call back to verify it's on its way.
-
There are a few differences. The shift and enter keys are positioned differently and have resulted in quite a few miss presses on my part. I have been coping but am defiantly considering buying a US one.
-
Yea, the | key is moved, the enter key is bigger and the shift on teh left is smaller. I will probably put my old KB in here.

Cendirect is back down to $746 (got a price alert email). A little too late for me though as I already have my laptop from LU.
Got my US keyboard last week from ebay. Had to bend it a little as it was bent in certain areas but finally straightened it out and replaced the French/US keyboard. Also received my orange zeroshock III 13.3" case last week and it is definitely nice. -
Is there any stroe in NY (manhattan) that sells the 3820TG?
-
There is no store in the US that sells the 3820TG.
Bronsky
-
Even not an offical store that sells Acer products?
and if can't get it in the US, where can i get it in europe? -
Cendirect's price is the lowest but at the same time they charge highway robbery for shipping and it's not even UPS. $60 for USPS.... lame.
Much better to go with Lu at this point I think. Fast turnaround, $30 UPS shipping. -
Does anybody have an E-mail address for PChome? I can't seem to find it anywhere on their website. I would like to send them e-mail to ask if they stock the 3820TG with a black lid. LU Computers haven't responded to any of my 3 E-mail inquiries, so I guess I won't be buying from them.
For those who have purchased from PChome, what are they like to deal with? Do they respond to E-mails/inquiries in a timely manner? What about warranty claims and after sales support? -
I ordered from their site and then a question about the ability to register the Taiwan warranty was raised to I cancelled the order (turns out I was wrong by BTW). It took only 2 days to process the refund. No one has reported any problems with them but I can't recall reading any reports of warranty work.
Their website is really easy to use. Plus, they have I5 models.
Bronsky
-
Thanks for the feedback on them. Would you happen to have an E-mail address for them?
-
If you use Chrome as your browser, you can read their site. I think there is a contact link somewhere. The emails from them, you can't use the address to respond, it just echos back so I don't have a usuable address.
Good luck. It takes a few days to hear from them.
Bronsky
-
Thanks for your help Bronsky. After spending a bit of time on their site with Google Chrome, it doesn't look like there's anyway to contact them through their website or via e-mail unless you purchase a product from them first.
-
There is no black lid 3820TG in Taiwan and PCHome is no exception.
As for after sale, I think someone actually asked PCHome similar questions and posted in this thread earlier. You can try searching this thread. I think it's returned only within 7 days of receiving the shipment. -
Awesome, Sounds promising. Thanks Bronsky!
I just hope the Acer works fine right out of the box.
I've spent more time on the phone and running benchmarks for Dell than actually playing games this year. Well, close enough anyway. -
Well the good news is that LU updated my order with a UPS tracking number. The bad news is that even though it shipped today, the 2nd, it's ETA is the 9th. Hurray for guaranteed 3 day shipping
-
Wow i'm an idiot. I just placed an order with Lu Computers for the 3820TG...
I checked my order confirmation and I ordered the 1830T by accident LOL!
1830 SKU = 17888
3820 SKU = 17878
Price = exact same.
LOL... I get confused easily
