I don't think one is actually needed for memory chips as they don't dissipate nearly as much heat as the GPU does.
If it's doable and you feel like tackling it - why not, but it's the GPU die that is the main cause for concern here.

Unscrew the fan and check the fins inside the hole. They had to be clean. Check if the gpu had good contact with the heatsink. Clean the heatsink if you see dirt. Uninstall all programs who may run in the backgroud and all gpu or cpu information programs. Install speedfan 4.49. If all fail you may need to plug the fan to continuously run at maximun speed to a usb port with the help of two wires. I have done that trick when I had the 8600M GT semi-broken and happend to see high temperatures after I cooked in a oven (when it's too late). It's a bit loudly of course, but you can't have it all. Either way the fans' speed must go up, so you have to be wise before you have problems. High temperatures produce errors and hurt the stability of the electronics even when temperatures are stay down. It's like a fever of 42 Celsius. It may permanently damage some parts. If you go for cheap " usb to full speed fan mod" ask me again because I didn't rememeber at which usb pins I solder the two wires.

As you can see in normal operation mode .... Mozilla Firefox and µTorrent and this in background [IMG]
    the temp is 40-45 Celsius.

This is an almost good result in the winter, with thermal paste and copper shim on GPU / RAM chips .....

    Γεια σου φιλε μου,τι κανεις?
I am an owner of Acer 5920G. My Graphic card (nVidia GeForce 8600M GT) got burned.
As i have read from other users, these series of GPUs are getting burned very easily.Anyways!
I have also read that ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 is compatible to Acer 5920G
So,I bought from ebay an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570.
Happily,I installed it on my laptop,but.......nothing happens, black screen!!
btw the motherboard seams to work fine, all leds are blinking and everything I hear works, but black screen!
As I know there are some custom BIOS for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570,but I can't find nothing!
Anyone has any idea what can I do to make my laptop work or any link to this custom BIOS update for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570??
    Please help..... :(

    γεια σου....

First of all i think must see this page
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/396320-acer-mxm-models-cards.html
and as you can see none have upgrade to HD 4570.....so maybe must buy one of this cards on page above....
But i think also it is some way (editing vga bios) with some tools (see this http://forum.notebookreview.com/not...-phoenix-how-get-romless-video-card-work.html) to make your card to run...you need more search on forum...if find it will post....

    Γεια σου αρχηγέ....
I have done the same mod to a friend's 5920g, installing a romless toshiba hd 4650 1 ddr3 card and i had to integrate the vbios of the card in the sbios of the system. I can do the same for your 4570, i just need to know if you really have the romless toshiba version and a way to flash the modded bios to your laptop(i recommend heat-gunning your old 8600 gt to revive it temporarily).

Yeah, it's as easy as this - open BIOS, remove one of the OPROMs, put the ATi one in there, build the BIOS, flash, restart and that's it.

I have a 5920G which I allready reflowed, reballed and replaced the Nvidia 8600M, which is now faulty again by the way....

My question is, I read some looong time ago, that someone managed to Boot with internal Intel GMX X3100 instead of the NVIDIA (with the card removed from its slot)

I remove the card but get a black screen when I turn on..
Do you guys know if there is Bios MOD for this Laptop .
My sister only uses it for googling and Facebook so no GFX power needed at all, dont want to spend another 90$ in another card.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Hi,
I've just spent an hour reading through this thread. Incredible work!

I've just tried to upgrade my card following your instructions, but i've not had any luck. The card is Nvidia 9600 GT - pulled from a working 6930

I bought my laptop a few years ago as a refurb 5920 (not g), it has a HD3470 and aligns more with a 5920 than a 5920g on the Acer drivers website. THe BIOS also says 5920G (before modding).

Anyway, I flashed the patched BIOS '5920G_MXM_V3.WPH'. When my laptop restarted I noticed the BIOS picture screen had changed and Windows (7. 64bit) booted as normal.

I then took out my HD3470, removed the heating putty, applied thermal paste (very thin) to the 4 memory chips and the GPU of the 9600GT, slotted and screwed it into place (had a to move the wireless card wire) and went to boot up my laptop.

When turning on my laptop LEDs come on and the fan go, but the screen in blank. After about 4 seconds I get two sharp beeps and the fans turn down to slow - though the power doesn't go off, it just sticks there. I get nothing on the screen. I can plug my old HD3470 back in and the laptop runs as normal. I know you guys recommend using a copper shim to carry heat more efficiently from the GPU to the heatsink, but I would hope I could at least get a POST screen.

Does anyone have any suggestions beyond getting a copper shim (which I will be doing next)?

    Thanks

I think must be sure to full remove the (old) Ati (HD3470) drivers. Can you use the "Driver Cleaner" software....
Maybe can you keep an image of your os and after go to format your pc for a new clean test of new nvidia...

Hello!!! I'm new here. First of all sorry for my english. The question is that i have a dead and dusty aspire 5920g with burned 8600m gs 256MB and in the last mounths a was thinking in buy a new one graphic card like a 9600m gt (DDR2, DDR3, 512MB or 1GB) or 9650m gt (DDR2, DDR3, 512MB or 1GB). The first question that i want to hurl you is if these cards are compatible with my laptop acer aspire 5920g and, as i can saw on the forum that yes, i want to know yours experiences and what is better and less hot. The second question is that as I have read on the forum these cards require to flash the BIOS before work with them and how can i do that if when i turn on the laptop the display is black? Or these video cards have and plug and play system and when i put them without flashed BIOS the display works and after is when i can flash the BIOS? Sorry for my computer skill too if i said a outrage. appreciate the help!!!

Hi Dedalos! I'm pretty sure its not a driver issue because I can't even get BIOS to boot. The two beeps apparently mean 'parity error', I'm not sure what that means exactly - something about ram memory. I've tried removing ram and the video card, but that gives different beeps or no beeps. I've definitely flashed the nodded BIOS. This means either the card is broken (it was pulled from a working system though) or its not compatable. This is strange because it is an Acer 9600 GT with DDR2 memory. I will try wiping the os and/or drivers just to check though.

Walillas - your English is pretty good! You need to flash the modded BIOS first, if your computer works but just the display is broken then you can try a "blind flash". This sets something up on a USB card to automatically flash a BIOS without you doing anything. It can also write a log file so you can see if it worked. Search on Google for "blind flash BIOS", there is a detailed guide somewhere on this forum.
Also, the DDR3 is faster than the DDR2, but the faster speed makes it much hotter and you might have cooling problems. You will need to use a small piece of thin copper between the card chip and laptop heatsink to help transfer heat. And maybe thermal paste/putty on the memory chips. I'd imagine the 9650 would be faster, but I don't know if it is comparable. The important thing is to buy a "MXM ii" card NOT made by Dell or Asus. Good luck. There are better people to help, but I thought I would get things going.

theforsh, try clearing CMOS right before switching cards, for example using cmospwd.exe /k.

Hey, thanks for the idea. Its done something and moved me a little closer, but i'm still not getting a display. Whereas before the laptop would only work for a few seconds before beeping and then powering down, after clearing CMOS it is actually booting - if I leave the laptop it will keep going and after a minute the windows startup tune will play, but still not display. The HDD light goes for a while and then everything slows. The laptop won't shutdown if I press the off button as usual, I have to cut the power to get it to turn off. When I put the old card back in windows runs as normal with full display, it also comes up with the "Windows did not shut down properly" message so it defintely loaded.

I'm almost there, is there a setting i'm missing?
    Cheers

:Edit: shutdown does work, and I can use a USB drive to boot into freeDOS. Still doesn't give me a display but if I type 'beep' and press return my laptop beeps!

:EDIT2: I took all video cards out. This gave me a white screen, and if I plugged in a USB stick with freeDOS then typed "beep" it would beep. So in both conditions the computer will now ignore a video card if a non-working one is in.

Thats right. I've just tried through the VGA using a monitor and I still have no input. Interestingly when the VGA cable is removed the monitor detects that it has been disconnected. But when it is connected it is just a black screen and the monitor says "no input - going to sleep". I wonder if the laptop is detecting the card, but not able to output video through it. I'm not able to use the HDMI out as it stopped working a few years ago.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

@ theforsh Maybe this is more than one problem for your laptop, more than vga...

Maybe can you try to reset BIOS by uninstalling mobo battery or full uncharged the mobo capacitors....
If you can not open the laptop and find the mobo battery (i have open my laptop many times but i am not sure about mobo battery.....) try to unplug the power cable, put out the main laptop battery and press the power button for 10-15 sec continuously..

Thanks for the replay theforsh. And for my english, in the job interviews dont think the same. Do you know if with the last official Bios version 3813, it works just by plugging the card??? Anyway do you know some good tutorial link to "blind flash"?? On internet there is much mess and I do not trust. Big money at stake. Again I thank replies.

    Hi Dedalos,
I've tried resetting BIOS, scrubbing the drivers and using an external monitor with no luck. I just booted the laptop with the 9600 GT card in and it gave me a blank screen - I was able to get a dxdiag report though (windows key + R, type dxdiag, press enter, wait a minute, press S, press enter - saves a copy of the report to the desktop). The dxdiag report doesn't show that there is any display device attached at all, so the card is not being detected at all, under any conditions. I think it is either my laptop or a faulty card. I'm going to send the card back and go for an HD 3650 (VG.86M06.004). It is slightly slower, but runs cooler and is more compatible with the 5920.

    Thank you for your help

:EDIT: Attached dxdiag report for anyone curious.

Well I am here again and now sorry for my ignorance dedalos. I read all of the thread and still I have doubts about "blind flash". I read the tutorial about that here ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/629114-5920g-blind-flash-bios-question.html) and I didn't get any conclusion, because the one who ask for blind flash don't get that it worked at the end. Until now, step y step, as write .NetRolller 3D: I downloaded WinCris 1.0.0.4. and the patched BIOS.WPH, then I formatted a USB with windows tool and I created the USB recovery disc with WinCris getting 3 files in the USB (PHLASH16.EXE, MINIDOS.SYS and BIOS.WPH). Now I have 4 questions?

    1. With the steps until here I can plug the USB on the laptop or is necesary create a autoexec.bat file?
    2. Is necessary use HP USB format tool for it works?
    3. How I know that everything is properly intalled? of course without the video card. Some sounds, flashing lights,...
    4. This method worked for someone?

    1. (i think) for me no autoexec.bat file
    2. no
    3. yes
    4. This method works for me in the past.

Please repeat the steps but first of all must make your usb flash key "active" from windows hard disk manager tool (or other tool).

I don't understood the last part. Why do I must mark my USB as active partition? If my computer on wich I work is other than 5920. This make sense? Now you rise doubts. I don't know if I have to format USB in FAT32 or NTFS? And again, how I know that everything is intalled OK? of course without the video card.

Sorry dedalos for my ignorance but as you see I am very very newbie.

The "active" usb is just for booting your laptop from this usb stick (if not boot from usb).
You usb must formates in fat 32, as default.
The tutorial i think says how blinking the laptop leds and how many time must wait.

At the end I can mark the USB as a active partition in a Windows 7 computer with diskpart program. Then I format it as FAT32, executed WinCris getting the three files in the USB (PHLASH16.EXE, MINIDOS.SYS and BIOS.WPH), plugged the USB in the primary USB port, connected the laptop to the AC and pressed FN+ESC and POWER. And what is happend? The Power button light starts flashing and after about 1 minute the screen turns from black to white light. The USB light flashes every 1 minute so it does not seem to it are working. And now I am waiting for some laptop reaction...I'll keep commenting

Sorry but at the end nothing happened. That method didn't work. I tried to put autoexec.bat too but the same thing happened. Now I'm really lost. Does anyone know what I can do? I never get to relive this damn laptop...

Can I check I have this right? Your 5920G laptop has a broken graphics card so you have no picture on the screen, but otherwise the laptop is in full working condition?

If this is true, do you know if your laptop will boot to USB disc drive if one is connected? Do you know what the boot order is in BIOS? I think the default original factory settings are "try to boot from CD first, then hard drive, then USB stick".

If it is USB stick you could try to flash BIOS without being able to see, using a program called phlash16. If it is not USB first, maybe someone could work out the button presses so you could change it yourself blind?

If it is CD first maybe you could boot into DOS using a CD. If it is a CD first you will need a DOS boot CD, try and find how to make one using google. If you boot from CD I think there is a point when the computer screen says "press any key if you want to boot from CD", you will have to wait 10 seconds after you turn on the power and then press any key to start the boot into DOS.

Either create a USB DOS boot using HP utility (as described) or CD DOS boot disc. You've already done most of the work to set up a USB DOS boot. You need to delete autoexec.bat and copy the bios .WHP file and phlash16.exe onto the card. Rename the bios file to "BIOS" so it is "BIOS.WHP".

Once in DOS (give the system a few seconds to boot, and then assume it is in DOS) you can run the phlash16 program - just type (without quotes) "phlash16.exe /c /v /x BIOS.WHP", and hope for the best! You'll get a beeping noise to say its worked.

Good luck. Feel free to ask more questions, but i'm very busy at the moment and might not get back for a while.

Thanks theforsh for your replies. And yes my laptop only have the graphic card burned (I think). I baked it too many times until one day stopped working. The only think that I strange is when I turn it on with the card disconnected not sound the start of windows, so I think that is as error state because it don't detect the graphic card. Now I don't dare to conect the card because I unweld his chip and I was not able to weld it back. To make sure that no other broken things, this happened to you or windows booted with their sounds? Even so I tried to booted it from CD to see what happens. And again a lot of thanks for you helping theforsh and dedalos. I'll keep comenting...

Well I'm here again and with bad news. I created a MSDOS boot disc with NERO and put on it a .bat file with a beep program to generate a sound when I got to find blindly the unit letter where is the cd-rom becuase MSDOS load in letter A but de cd-rom and of course beep.bat load in other unit and I need to find it, but no way. It seems that the laptop loads the cd but nothing happened. I proved this method in other 2 laptops (the letter unit changes in this) and works, but blindly... is complicated. I proved all of the letters and no response.

Now the next question is considerer that other laptop parts are broken and wherefore I ask you if when you turned on the laptop with no video card, the laptop starts with the windows sound or it seems like a error state??

I'm desesperate. I pay for it 1000€ (all my scholarship) and only lasted 3 years...And now I work in a pentium 4 that no longer played well videos. I'll never buy other acer

I have an Acer Aspire 5920G with 8600M GS VGA. The problem (after a few years of use) that presents itself is this:

I made the overtrick the vga but not resolved.

I installed a working 9600M GS, but the notebook show a black screen on boot too.
Now the notebook is in this situation:

    With 8600m

    With 9600m

    Without VGA

Can you advise me how to proceed to solve? Is there a way?

    Hi Robox, two things:

    1 - Your images aren't working.
2 - If you want to use a 9600m in the 5920G then you need to flash a modded system BIOS. The file is called "5920G_MXM_V3.WPH" and is hosted on 'Mega'. You need to create a MSDOS boot USB/floppy/CD and have this BIOS file and a flashing program called phlash16.exe on there too. Then boot into MSDOS and run phlash16 to flash the modded BIOS. Your laptop should then be able to use the 9600M. I'm not going to spoon feed you a step by step guide because there are plenty of guides on how to do this - try reading this thread from the beginning or using google.

Wallilas - i'm afraid your problem goes far beyond what I know! My only thought is that either your laptop has a bigger hardware fault, or that you need to work out how to get the crisis flash to flash the modded BIOS. Good luck!

Yes. Read the posts or use google "blind flash".

    I do this:

"Remove the MXM card from the machine.
    Download WinCris 1.0.0.4.
Download the patched BIOS, rename it to BIOS.WPH, and put it in the directory of WinCris.
Use WinCris to create an USB crisis recovery disk. (There is no crisis to recover in this case, but a crisis disk can also be used for regular flasing.)
Shut down the machine, remove the battery and unplug the AC.
Plug in the crisis USB disk.
Press and hold Fn+Esc. Plug in the AC adapter.
Still holding Fn+Esc, press the Power button. Release Fn+Esc.

When the laptop shuts down, reinstall the MXM card, and you should be good to go."

Result: boot, power and battery led blinking, black screen but with backlight on, after 5 min same situation but white screen, same situation after 40 minute....I dont know if the bios was flashed (sure the vga dont work, black screen)
